BUGKBOARD.
No. 394,519. Patented Deo. 11, 1888.
oooooooQoo oooqoooooo UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HANNIBAL L. S\VEET, OF FOND DV LAC, VISCONSIN.
BUCKBOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,519, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed Octobe 3, 1887.
To all whom, it 77mg concern-.-
Be it known that I, HANNIBAL L. SWEET, of Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac, and in the State of lllisconsiii, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckboards; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to buckboalfd-wagons, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the saine.
A are the buekboard-slats. B is the headblock. C is the bed-piece for the hind axle; and D D are the body-rests.
The slats A are made in sections, and the abutting ends of these sections are secured together by straps E E', (the first named preferably of wood and the last of iron,) which also connect all of the slats together.
The under sides of the body-rests D are concaved and rest on the slats A, to which they are secured b v bolts a, that pass down through the body-rests and the ends of the slats and draw the slats up into the concave, giving the slats an upward curve, which may be increased or decreased, according' to the eoncavity in the body-rests. Between the body-rests the slats A are clamped between the straps E E by bolts d', and in front and rear of the straps E E the slats are further clamped in their rela- Serial No. 251,302. (No model.)
tive position by Cross -pieces F, below and above, which latter are held by bolts b, that pass between the slats, as shown in Fig. 1.
The upper strap,E,1nay be dispensed with, if desired, and the ends of the slats clamped directly to the under sides of the body-rests by the bolts @awhile the intermediate bolts would be passed directly through the slats from above.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a buckboard, the combination of curved wooden slats arranged end to end in pairs to forni semi-elliptic supporting devices, central cross strap or straps and bolts uniting the inner adjacent ends of said slats, body-rests coneaved on their under sides and bolted to the outer pairs of slats, and cross-pieces above and below the slats on each side of their centrally-united ends, said cross-pieces being held together by bolts passing between each adjacent pair of slats and through the cross-pieces, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Tisconsiln in the presence of two witnesses.
HANNIBAL L. SWEET. lVitnesses:
