UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN G. RAI'INER, OF LEBANON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHRISTIAN J. PFEFFER OF SAME PLACE.
WHIP ATTACHMENT FOR HOLDING RIBBONS, BANNERS, 84C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 394,509, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed July 2'7, 1888. Serial No. 281,193. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. RAHNER, of Lebanon, in the county of St. (lair and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in \Yhip Attachments for Holding Ribbons, Banners, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to devices for attaching marriage or campaign favors, &c., to whipstocks, &c.; and the invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure I is a detail perspective of a whipstock with my attachment devices secured thereto. Fig. II is an enlarged perspective view of my spring-clasp that grasps the stock and its triplicate forks for holding the ribbons or favors, and Fig. III is an enlarged section of the spiral spring-ring that is seated around the spring-clasp shown in Fig. II to re-enforce the hold of the same and as a means for attachment of banners, &c.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar figures of reference indicate like parts in all the views, 1 represents a whip-stock.
2 is a spring-clasp whose open ring 3 clutches around the whip-stock, and which is provided with triplicate forks 4, which are elastically connected to said open ring by bow-strings 5, that are integral therewith. The three forks are preferably rounded at top and curved slightly outward, so as to facilitate the passage of the ribbon or favor 6 over or between the same. I have shown and described triplicate forks; but do not confine myself to that numher, for the same may be increased or diminished Without departing from the essential features of this invention.
7 represents a spiral spring-ring which fits around, is seated on, and re-enforces the attachment of the open ring of the spring-clasp on the Whip-stock that it embraces, and 8 are banners or bannerets whose staffs may be passed through the spirals of the spiral springring, and may thus, as are the ribbons, be used as marriage or campaign favors, or as memorials of rejoicing, &c. The use of the spiral spring-ring around the open ring of the triplicate fork-clasp makes the attachment to the whip-stock much more secure, adds to the elegance of the device, and also provides it with additional facilities for the insertion and attachment of the favors and bannerets to be secured to the whip-stocks. These favors are largely in use in some cities for other than marriage or campaign purposessuch, for instance, as distinguishing the whips and turnouts of different livery establishments, the name of the establishment and its propietor being printed or emblazoned on the ribbons or bannerets. Thus, also, when used as wedding favors the names of the two families to be united may be portrayed, or when as campaign favors the names of the candidates.
I do not confine myself to the especial arrangement of the favors shown in Fig. I, for the ribbons, bannerets, &c., can be inserted in various positions, loops, or angles to suit the taste of the party using the whip.
The spring-clasp 2, constructed of the open ring 3, bows 5, and triplicate forks l, is made of any suitable elastic material, so that the open ring will expand to the size of its seat on the whip-stock and spring to its grasp of the same.
9 represents a ring, of brass or other suitable material, located Within the spirals of the spiral ring 7, and whose function is to limit the expansion of said spiral spri1'1g-ring,so that it can not be slid down too far on the whip-stock, &c.
The spiral spring-ring may be made of brass wire or any other suitable material that will re-enforce the spring-clasp of the open ring.
The same attachment devices may be used for securing ribbons and other favors to flag and banner staffs, &c.
I claim as my invention 1. In an attachment for whips, &c., the spring open ring-clasp 3, arranged to embrace the whip-stock, the spring-bows that surmount the open ring, and forks that surmount the bows, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
the spiral ring that limits its expansion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN G. RAHNER.
In presence of-' BENJN. A. KNIGHT, SAML. KNIGHT.
