SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,175, dated December 11, 1888. Application filed June 14, 1888. erial No. 277,105. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN T. GRzvBowsKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cutter-I'Ieads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in cutter-heads and cutters to be used on ma- TO chines for grooving lumber, being especially adapted for use on a grooving-machine such as described in my pending application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 253,989, filed November], 1987; and myinven- I 5 tion consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and pflltl cularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a cutter-head and cutters which are so formedthat the cutters are rigidly secured to the cutter-head and are prevented from becoming broken while in operation, and from being hurled by centrifugal force from the cutter- 2 5 head, so as to endanger the life of the person operating the machine.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cutter-head and out ters embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same taken on the line .90 a: of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one section of the cutterhead, showing the cutters arranged therein. Fig. 4 is an edge view of my improved cutter- 3 5 head and cutters.
A B represent a pair of circular plates of suitable diameter, which have theirinner sides plane and are provided on their outer sides with hubs or collars C. Through the centers 40 of the said plates are openings which are adapted to receive the shaft or arbor. 011 the inner side of each circular plate is out an annular groove, D, which is arranged concentrically with the central opening in the plate,
and communicating with the said grooves D are radial grooves E, which extend to the perimeters of the disks or plates. Each of the said disks is provided with a series of transverse openings, F, the said openings extending through the centers of the grooves E and through the spaces midway between the said grooves.
G represents a series of cutters, which are shaped as shown and have their outer ends provided with cutting-points II. These cutters have their inner portions or arms fitted in the grooves E and are provided with longitudinal slots I, which register with the openin F. The thickness of the cutters is slightly in excess of the depth of the grooves, so that the said cutters are raised slightly beyond the inner faces of the disks or plates. The inner ends of the cutters extend into the annular grooves I).
When the disks or plates are placed together to form the completed cutter-head, they are so arranged that the cutters in the grooves of one disk or plate are exactly midway between the cutters in the grooves of the other disk or plate, the said cutters being thereby 7o spaced regularly around theperimeter of the cuttenhead. It will be observed that the outters secured to one disk or plate are out of line with the intermediate cutters secured to the opposite disk or plate, one set of cutters being adapted to cut one side of the groove in the lumber and the other set of cutters in the opposite plate being adapted to out the other side of the groove, as will be readily understood.
K represents a series of clamping-bolts, which correspond in number with the cutters in the cutter-head, and said bolts pass through the openings F in the plate or disk A and have their threaded extremities engaging the threaded openings F in the plate 13: Inasmuch as the slots I in the cutters register with the said openings F it follows that the clamping-bolts pass through the said slots also, and thereby absolutely prevent the possibility of 0 the cutters flying out of the cutter-head by centrifugal force and render it impossible for the person operating the grooving-machine to be injured from this cause.
Inasmuch as the thickness of the cutters is 5 slightly in excess of the depth of the grooves, as before stated, it follows that the opposing sides of the disks or plates do not come directly in contact with each other; but said disks or plates are caused to bear firmly against opposite sides of the cutters, so that when the clamping-bolts are tightened the cutters are held firmly between the plates at any desired adjustment, and are prevented from Working loose in the cutter-head. By this arrangement the plates or disks bear upon both surfaces of the arms or inner portions of the cutters, and the friction between 5 the disks or plates and the cutters when the clamping-bolts are tightened is so great that the cutters cannot become displaced. over, this arrangement is advantageous for the reason that the cutters exert no strain whatever upon the clamping-bolts, and hence the latter are not liable to become broken while the machine is in operation.
The clamping-bolts are provided with righthand screw-threads, and the heads of the said bolts project beyond the outer side of the plate A, which forms the left-hand side of the cutter-head. The latter, when in operation, rotates in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, and hence if the projecting head of the bolts should strike the board which is being grooved while the cutter-head is in operation the tendency willbe to tighten the said clamping-bolts, and thereby secure the cutters more firmly between the plates of the head.
By arranging half of the cutters in one plate and the other half in the opposite plate, so that the said cutters are arranged alternately and out of line with each other, each cutter is caused to operate only in one half of the groove made in the board, and thereby the cutters, cutter-head, and shaft or arbor are very materially relieved of strain and the durability of the same is correspondingly en- 3 5 hanced.
\Vhen in operation, a number of the cutterheads are arranged side by side on the arbor 'or shaft'a, with their hubs in contact with each other, and clamping nuts or sleeves 1) 40 are screwed onto the shaft or arbor, so as to force the cutter-heads firmly together and also force the plates or sections of each cutterhead firmly against the cutters therein, so that in the event that one of the bolts K should become broken while the machine is in operation the plates A and B will be still so firmly clamped against the cutters that the latter cannot be thrown from the cutter-head by centrifugal force.
Having thus claim- 1. The combination, in a cutter-head, of the plates A B, having the grooves E on their i11- ner opposing faces, the grooves of one plate 5 5 being out of line with the grooves of the other plate, the cutters arranged in the said grooves, the latter being of such a depth as to receive the cutters, so that the plain portion of the plate opposite the cutters bears firmly thereon described my invention, 1
. and holds them in their grooves, and means,
substantially as set forth, to clamp the plates A B together, whereby the cutters are clamped between said plates, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a cutter-head, of the plates A B, each having the radial grooves E Moreon their opposing inner faces, the grooves of one plate not registering with the grooves of the other plate, the cutters arranged each in a single groove and being of a thickness somewhat in excess of the depth of the grooves, whereby the portion of said cutters not within the grooves is in contact with the opposing side of the adjacent plate, and means, substantially as set forth, to clamp the said plates together, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a cutter-head, of the plates A B, each having the grooves E on their opposing inner faces, and the grooves of one plate being arranged out of line with the grooves of the other plate, the cutters arranged in the said grooves, each individual cutter in a single groove, and having the slots I,whereby each cutter will have its shank or body covered by the opposing ungrooved face of the adjacent plate, and the clamping-bolts K, extending through transverse openings in the plates, and through the slots I, whereby the cutters are clamped firmly between the opposing sides of the plates, substantially as described.

In a cutter-head, the plates A B, each having the grooves E on their opposing inner faces, the grooves of one plate being out of line with the grooves of the adjacent plate, and the cutters arranged and secured in said grooves, each individual cutter in a single groove, whereby when the two plates are clamped together, with the cutters between them, one plate will have its groove containing a series of cutters arranged in one line, while the other plate will have its grooves containing another series of cutters arranged in another line, and thus the cutters will be arranged alternately, and one series will operate in one side of the groove of the lumber and the alternate series will operate in the other side of such groove, as set forth.
5. The combination of the platesA B, each having on their opposing inner faces a single annular groove, D, the grooves E radiating therefrom and provided with the openings E, which extend through the said grooves and through the spaces midway between them, the cutters each being arranged in a single groove, E, and having the slots I, the said plates being secured together, with the grooves of one plate out of line with the grooves of the other plate, so as to arrange their cutters alternately and out of line with each other, and the clamping-bolts extending through and engaging the openings F and through the slots I in the cutters, substantially as described.
