UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W1 (RONAN, ()F '"IVIONVIILLE, TENXESSEE.
H'ORSE-DETACH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,157, dated December 11, 1888. Application fi July 1'7, 1888. Serial No. 280,182, (No model.)
To (all 1071/0710 it nz/rcl concern/.-
the lower end of a second cord or strap, c,
Be it known that I, JAMES \V. ()RONAN, a which is passed through suitable eyes or citizen of the United States of America, rc siding at li )tonvill(;+, in the countv of Lake and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llorsefl)etachcrs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompairvi ng d rawin This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in detaching devices for carriages and wagons; and the invention comprises the details of construction, combination, and arrangen'ient of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and par ticularly pointed out in the claims.
In the aoconipanying drawings, Figurt': l. is a front end view of a vehicle, showing my invention as used in practice. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. i is a side view, and Fig. 5 is a detail.
Referril'ig to the drawings, A designates an ordinary siugletree of a carriage or wagon, and to the end thereof are secured vertical frames 0 a, from the lower ends of which project right-angular screws o a, designed to be screwed into the ends of said singletrcc. The upper end of each frame (1 has a bent arm, forming an opening or recess, a, of approximately U shape. In the wall of this frame isa vertical slot or opening, 7.), upon one side of which formed a shoulder, I), having an inner beveled surface, (F, as shown.
B is an approximately T-shaped hook pivotally secured at its lower end by a cross-rod, I), in the slot h, and in a groove, Z)", 011 the upper rear side of this hook is pivotally mounted a small lever or trigger, (F, the upper shouldered end of which his over the upper end of hook B. The lower forward end of lever or trigger C is provided with a short lug or projection, (I, designed to engage shoulder Z). The lower rear end of said lever or trigger has a short extension, (1', against which bears the upper free end of a springplate, (Z attached at its lower end to the T- shaped hook B.
In practice a cord or strap, 1), is connected at its ends to loops or rings e 6, attached to the upper end of the levers or triggers C, and to the center of this cord or strapis connected guides attached to the dash-board of a vehicle and within convenient reach of the driver. From this it will be seen that bypnllingon the cord or strap c the cord or strap 1) will att'ect the pulling on the upper ends of levers or tri disen gaging the lugs thereof from contact; with the shoulders I), and the consequent withdrawal of the projecting ends of hooks I; from the apertures in the rear ends of the traces, thus effecting the ready detaching of a horse from a vehicle in case of runaway or accident.
\Vhen the hooks l are retaining the traces in place, said hooks are held as against displacement by means ofthe triggers or levers, the spririg-pressure on which holds the lugs thereof firmly against the slnnllders of the frames.
I claim as my inv(.-ntion- 1. As an improvement in detaching devices for vehicles, the frames having the approximately T-shaped hooks, and the triggers or levers pivoted to said hooks and engaging said frames, and the operating cordsor straps, substantially as shown and described.
2. As an improvementindetachingdevices, the frames having the upper U-shaped openings or reces es, the T-shaped hooks projectin g into said openings or recesses, and the operating cords or straps, substantially as shown and described.
3. As an improvement in detachingdevices, the frames having the slotted wall and the beveled shoulders, the T-shaped hooks, and the sprii'ig-held levers or triggers engaging said shoulders, substantially as shown and described.
l. The combination, with the verti a1 frames having slots and beveled shoulders, the right angular screws, and the upper bent arms of the T-shaped hooks, the levers or triggers having lugs engaging said shoulders, the springs, and the operating cords or straps, substantialb as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix m v signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES \Y. CRONAN.
