HORSE-DETACHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,125, dated February 5, 1884.
Application filed October 29, 1883. (No modcLl To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. WALKER, of the city and county of Fulton, and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in 'Horse-Detachers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to improv horse detachers, as hereinafter described, and pointed .out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved latch device for detaching the trace and shaft of the carriage. Fig. 2 is a detail of the same in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail and vertical and transverse section. Fig. 41's a section of the dash-board, and part of the bottom of the carriage-body, and side elevation of the foot-lever device for working the detacher and the brake, when applied.
I make a malleable-iron bar or plate, a, having a latch, 11, pivoted to one end for securing the trace-loop c, to which the part 0' of the trace that is hitched to the carriage is con nected, and which is to be released by said latch. The other end of said bar has the buckle (Z pivoted to it, by which the part f of the trace is connected that is attached tothe hame. Said bar a also has the loop 9 at the back, for confining the end of the part f of the At themiddle of said bar a it has a branch, t, extending upward, and having the buckle j for connecting with the back-band of the harness, and from the lower edge'at the same place said bar has a branch, k, extending downward, andhaving the shaft-retaining latch Z pivoted to its lower end. This latch closes onto the stud m, projecting from the front of the upper part of bar a, to confine the shaft a of the carriage, and is secured by and plate a, and coiled around stud m, to be compressed-by said latch, when fastened by key 0, for pushing off the latch quickly when the key is pulled out, and preventing any failure of the latch to escape. The latch b closes against plate a behind latch Z, and also behind the shaft a, which touches the lower edge of said latch Z), when said shaft is confined by by cords a, one to each, extending back, through h an eye, 12, in the dash-board w, to the foot lever x, pivoted to the bottom of the carriage-body at 3 and supported on a spring, 2*, suitably for being pressed down by the foot of the driver when it becomes necessary to detach the horse. The springz is coiled around a rod, 1), for its support, and said rod is pivoted to the floor of the carriage-body at c, and extends through a hole of the first lever, for being maintained in its proper position.
Having thus described my invention, I cl aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of trace-latch b, shaftlatch Z, fastening-stud m, and spring-key 0,
with the plate a, having trace-buckle (Z and back-strap bu ckle j substantially as described.
2. The combination .of trace latch b, shaftlatch Z, fastening-studm, spring and springkey '0, with the plate (1, having trace buckle (Z and back strap buckle j, substantially as described.
3. The trace-latch I), having stud t, in combination with plate a, having shaft-latch Z, said trace-latch I) being arranged to close behind latch Z, and be confined by the shaft a when it is confined by the latch Z, substantially as described.
4. The plate a, having trace-latch b, shaftlatch Z, trace-buckle (Z, trace-loop 1 backband buckle j, belly-band loop a, and the latch-stud m, combined and arranged substantially as described.
5. The combination of the foot-lever w, in the bodyof the carriage, with the spring-keys 0 and fastening-studs m of ahorse-detaehing nected with the foot-lever 0c, pivoted to the apparatus, for releasing the same, substa-nfioor'of the carriage-body at y, and supported tially as described. on the spring z,'substantially as described.
6. In a horse-detaching apparatus, the WM. MADISON XVALKER. 5 spring-keys 0, for releasing the retaining- Witnesses:
