J. J. BUTTER.
SAND BAND FOR VEHIGLBS' No. 394,150. Patented Dec. 11, 1888,
Ill 3 appended claim.
UNITED STATES JASPER JAMES BOTTER,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
SAND-BAND FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,150, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed July 19, 1888. $erial No. 280,375. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAsPER JAMES BOT'rER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in [tub and Axle Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a hub and axle protector having for its object to provide a simple, cheap, easily-applied, and effective shield or protector, which may be adj ustably secured to the axle of a vehicle to protect the spindle from falling dirt, dust, sand, &c.; and it consists in a certain novel construction and combination of devices, fully set forth hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of the improved protector applied in the operative position to an axle and hub. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the shield. Fig. dis a similar view of the ring.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the axle, having a spindle on its outer end, on which is mounted the hub and D designates the shield which is secured to the axle and extends outward over the inner end of the hub.
The shield consists of the standard E, having a recess or notch, F, in its lower end, which fits over the axle and is clamped thereon by means of the set-screw G, which is mounted in a tapped aperture near the lower end of the standard and impinges at its inner end against the axle and the curved plate H, which is attached to the upper end of the said standard and extends over the hub.
K represents a beveled ring which is fitted 011 the inner end of the hub, under the plate H, and it will be seen that the beveled outer side of the ring will prevent any dirt or sand which works in under the plate from dropping on the axle and passinginto the journal.
It will be seen that the shield is adjustable on the axle, whereby it may be applied and removed at any time and adj ustcd inward or outward to suit the character of the wheel, and the protecting-plate is curved and tits close to the hub, whereby any dirt which may drop from the telly will be prevented by the plate from coming in contact; with either the hub or the axle.
The ring K is beveled outwardly, as shown, and forms a V-shaped gutter, is, with the curved or rounded surface of the hub, so that the ring not only prevents the dust from fal1- ing from the hub to the axle, but by forming said gutter collects the dust and hastens its discharge from the hub. The said gutter will collect all dust that passes inward on the hub under the shield, and a part of which the shield might. prevent being thrown from the hub.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The herein-described hub and axle protector, composed of the bifurcated standard E, riding upon the axle, the thumb set-screw G to adjust and secure said standard, the curved metallic shield or plate H, secured to the standard and projecting over the hub, and the ring K, fitted upon the hub and having its outer face beveled to form the V-shaped gutter 7o with the rounded exterior of the hub, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JASPER JAMES BOTTER.
