RICHARD P. lVALSH, OF FT. IIOIIIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGIIOR OF ONE-FOURTH TO MIDDLIETON I). DEGGE, OF SAME PLACE.
CABLE. RAILWAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 394,040, dated December 4, 1888.
Application filed October 3l, 1887. Serial No. 253,907. (No model.)
To LZZ whom, it 11i/ty concern.:
Be it known that I, RICHARD P. WALsH, ot the city ot' Louis, in the State ot' Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cable Railways, ot which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the acmunlmnying' (,lrawing's, t'orming part ot' this specitication, and in which Figure I is a top view with part ot the roadbed removed, showing my invention. Fig. II is an enlargedperspective view showing` a portion ot' one ot the yokes. Fig'. III is a top view showing' a number otl the vokes and part. ot thc trames. Fig. IY isa side elevation ot' same. Fig'. V is a vertical transverse section taken on line Y V, Fig'. I. Fig'. Vl is a perspective view ot one ot the plates for supporting' the cone-pulleys. Fig. VII is a detail view showing' part oi' the femlenrollers. Fig'. VIII is a perspective view showin g' the puHey-support ing trame. Fig'. IX is a ln-rspective view ot one ot' the cable-pulley ,ionrnal-boxes. Fig. X is a section taken on line X X, Fig. VII.
Myinvention relates to an in'lprovement in the construction ot. cable-ways, and relates particularly to the construction ot' such ways at curves in the road.
llly invention consists in leatures ot novelty hereinafter t'ully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, l represents the track-rails of a cable railway, and 2 the roadbed, having' movable plates Si on one side to give access to the parts beneath. These plates are supported at their inner edges by lugs 4 on the yokes 5 ofthe conduit and at their outer edges by means ot rails or other suitable supports. lach yoke (or a suitable number ot them) is constructed on the short side of the curve, as shown in Fig'. II, where (i represents a horizontal fiange having' vertical fianges 7, with heads S on their upper ends. Above the heads S are similar heads, Sl, on the lower ends ot vertical tlanges lo, depending' from an upper horizont al lian ge, l l. Between the two flanges l() and the two flanges T there is a vertical space or opening', l2, into which one end oi' a frame, 15%, tits, the other end ot' the frame fitting in a like opening on the adjoining' tace of the next yoke, as shown in Figs. l and III. Vvhen the trames 13 are dropped into the openings l2, (see Fig'. III,) they lirst occupy the position shown in the center of Fig'. III. They are then moved hori- Zontally to bring' the trame 13 against the faces ot the inner iiangcs, l0 and 7, (see Fig'. II,) and they are here held by means ot' blocks lti, (see Figs. IlI and \'Ill,) which are dropped in behind them, litting' in notches l at the ends ot' the trames. Behind the blocks lo' I place setscrews 1S, (see Fig. Y,) which pass through the flanges T and 'lll and hold the fram es in their workingposition. lYhcn thus putin place, the trames, together with the pa rls they carry, are firmly held in operative position, and they can be quickly removed by turning outward on the screws IS, then removing' the blocks lo, then moving' the frames back from the position shown on the righthand side ol' Fig'. III to the position shown in the center ot' Fig'. III, and then lifting' them vertically upward.
The col'lstruction ot thc trames Iii is shown in Fig'. VIII, each having recesses lSl to re ceive one haltI ot` the box 2O (see Fig. IX,) beyon d which are shoulders '."l, against which lits the otherJialt' ot' the box it), and beyond this halt` oi' the box extend Hang-cs 22, against which are secured plates i3, which hold the boxes in place. Each Al'rame is provided with a box 2t) at top and a` box tl at bottom. Journaled in these boxes is the spindle 2l of the cable-pulley The lower plate, Q3, is provided with an opening, 2U, to receive a setscrew, 27, t'or the purpose ot setting up the box at this end of the spindle 2l as it becomes worn. The other end ot the spindle may be provided with a like. t screwgbut it is deemed unnecessary, as this end is in a convenient position to be reached by removing' one of the plates 3.
Beneath each frame I3, and secured to it, is a plate, 2S, provided with a` journal pin or projection, 2), on which tits a conc-pulley, 30. The arc ot' this cone corrcspomls with the periphery oi the pulley 25, as shown in Fig. Y, so that it' the cable should drop from the pulley 25 it will be guided back onto the pulley bythe cone-pulley.
Above the pulley 25 is a series of plain rollers or fenders, 3l, journaled on pins 32, the office of which is to receive the impact of the grip as the car passes around a curve. The rollers 3l are journaled in a channel-bar, 33, (see Fig. X,) which is secured by bolts 34 'to the faces 35 of the yokes.
It will be seen that the frames 13 carry the pulleys 25 and 30, and that when the parts need repairing or replacing` the frames can be quickly and easily removed through the op enings covered by the plates 3, and thus the repairing of the road is `greatly facilitated.
The frame, together with all the parts it Carries, is shown removed on the left-hand side of Figs. III and IV. The frame itself is shown in the center of Figs. III and IV, and the parts which it carries are shown in Vthe right-hand side of Figs. IlI and IV.
I claim as my inventionl. In a cable railway, the combination of the yokes having frame-supporting flanges and the frames, each provided with a main cable-pulley and a cone-pulley, and each removable from its support in the yoke, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a e( ble railway, the combination of the yokes provided with frame-supporting ianges, frames fitting in the flanges and giving support to pulleys, blocks IG, and setscrews 1S, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a cable railway, the combination of the yokes having' lianges 7, I0, and ll, heads 3 and 9 on the flan ges 7 and l0, and the frames fitting in said anges and carrying the pulleys, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a `cable railway, in Combination with the yokes having supportingflanges, the frames provided with pulleys 25 and 30, boxes 20, set-screw 27, blocks 1G, and the set-screws 1S, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a cable railway, in combination with the cable-pulleys 25, the cone-pulleys 30, arranged beneath the cable-pulleys and in line therewith, substantially as and for the purpose set fort-h.
G. In a `cablerrailway', the combination of the cable-pulleys 25, cone-pulleys 30, and pulleys 3l, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. In a cable railway, in combination with the cable-pulleys mounted in removable frames 13, auxiliary pulleys arranged beneath an d in line with the cable-pulleys and mounted on plates 2S, secured to said frame, whereby the whole may be removed together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
