UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR MARION MILLER, OF LOCKRIDGE, YORK COUNTY, NEBRASKA.
WEIGHT-MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,000, dated December 4, 1888. Application filed May l2, 1888. Serial No. 273,671. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that. I, OSCAR MARION MILLER, a citizen ot' the lvnited States ot' America, residing at Loeki-idee township, in the county ot' York and State ot" Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VWei,eht-3Iotors, ot' which the followingl is a speciiieation, reference being' had therein to the accompanying' drawi nge.
This invention pertains to certain new and uset'ul improvements in motors, having' t'or its object the provision of simple and highlyetiieieut. means tor obtaining;l a rapid continuous motion or power through two series or trains ot gearing', the outer wheels ot' which revolve at a rapid rate ot' speed.
The invention therefore comprises the detail, construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter t'ully set forth, and particularly pointed outA in the claim.
In the accompanying' drawings, Figure l is a plan view olf my improved motor. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig'. 3 is a sectional view on the line a .1', Fig'. l. Fig. i is an enlarg'ed detail plan view.
Referring' to the drawings, A desi gnates the trame or stand in suitable journal-boxes, (l, upon the end bars ot which is secured a shaft., d, upon which is loosely inounted the main gear-wheel ll, with a tooth, o2, in the outer side of which engages a tooth, a3, of a` `e'rooved pulley or drum, l), also disposed on said shaft.
Around this pulley or drum is wound a` rope,
h', one end being' secured thereto, and the other end is passed, 1)reterably,u p into a` tower, (not showin) and has secured to its end a suitable weight.
The main g'eai'vlieel l intermeshes or gears with a small pinion, d, secured on a shaft, d', upon which is located a screw or worm, d2. This screw or worm d? gears with a larger `gear-wheel, e, ot' a series or train ot' gearing', E, located on a transverse shaft, E', and said gear-wheel e lgears with a small pinion, f, ot' a series or train, F, on a shaft, F. This pinion f is made tast to the front tace of a large gearwheel, f2, which gears with a-pinion, e', fast to the front tace of a. second or intermediate gear-wheel, e?. This latter wheel gears with l a pinion, f3, tast with the central gear-wheel, fi, ot the series F, and this gear-wheelf gears with a pinion, e, fast with the rearmost ,leale wheel e" of the series E. The gear-wheel e* `:fears with a. pinion,j", tast with the rearmost gear-wheel f ot' the series F.
y G is a pinion secured upon a shaft, y, said i pinion beine; engaged by the rearmost- `e'earwheel f ot the series F. Upon one end ofthe shat't g is secured a pulley, g, around which is passed a belt, gf, (shown in dotted lines,) or to it is connected one end of a pitman, gf', attached at its other end to a pump-handle, g4, or other device it is designed to operate.
To the sha-tt. F is rigidly secured a` short arm, Il', whereon is placed a` weight, 71, held by a thumb-screw, 71.', working' in an aperture i thereof. B vsecuring' this weight at the outer end of arm II the speed ot' the motor will be decreased, and bysecuring' the same near the inner end of said arm the speed will be increased, as is obvious.
In practice, to wind the rope upon the pulley or drum Z1, the teeth o2 a3 oli' pulley l) and wheel are thrown out of engagement., and after winding said rope on said pulley and throwing the tooth o3 otl the latter into engagement with the tooth o2 ot' the .main gear-wheel l5 motion will be transmitted to the latter by reason of the descension ot' the weight attached to said rope. The gear-wheel B will impart motion to the train of gearing', the gear- I. wheels ot one series gearing with the pinions oi'- the other series, and thus a rapid and powerful motion is given to the pulley g, which will either carry the belt therewith or eti'ect the movement of the pitman.
From the foregoing' description it will be seen that I have produced an extremely simple motor, whereby a rapid continuous motion is obtained, and the device, being' free from all complication, is not. liable to easily get out ot' order; and my invention also embodies advantag'es in point of duin-ability, general eiii` ciency, and incxpensivencss.
I claim as my invention- The herein-deseribed improved motor, consisting' ot the frame having' the shafts a', E', F', and g, the series or trains of gearing E F, l comprising` the large gear-wheels having pin- IOO ions secured to their front faces and fast on In testimony whereof I affix my signature in their respective shafts, the shaft d', having presence of tWo Witnesses. the screw o1x woim d2 and pinion d, the pinion e, with which said screw or Worm engages, the OSCAR lWARION BIILLER. 5 main gear-wheel B, the pulley l) in engagement therewith, the Weighted rope, and the Titnessesz pulley g', fast on shaft g, all combined and al- T. A. ENGLISH,
ranged substautiallyas shown and described. ANSON M. OTIS.
