To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lom-zsz Answerer Es- ZINGER, a subject of the Grand Duke of Hesse, and residing at VOIIDS, in the Grand Duchy of Hesse, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Filter-Presses, (for which Letters Patent have been granted to main the following countries, to wit: Great Britain, April 25, 1887, N 0. 5,982; Germany, April 26, 1887, No. 42,894, France, April 29, 1887, No. 183,195; Belgium, April 29, 1887, No. 77,263; Sweden, May 3, 1887, No. 988; Italy, May 18, 1887. No. 112. Volume XLIII; Norwa May 20, 1887, No. 538; Spain, July 1 3, 18 7, No. 11,158; Austria-Hungary, November 6, 1887, respectively ii-umbered19,090 and 44,748, and Lrnxembnrg, February 2, 1888, N o. 955,) whereof the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to filter-presses or filtering apparatuses composed of a number of juxtaposed frames and offilteringwalls placed between the same; and its object is to provide more efilcient means than heretoforeemployed in like apparatuses for allowing theair contained in theframes or entering thereinto with the liquid to be filtered to ese'ape,and whereby air may be caused to pass into the frames, when at the end of an operation the remaining liquid is drawn oil. For this purpose the frames and the filtering-walls are inserted betwetn two chambers located at the ends of the apparatus, and they are provided with four holes each-two at the top and two at the bottomthe said holes forming, when the parts are put together, four channels. One of the lower channels and one of ,t-he up'pcr ones communicate with the interiouspace of the'altcrnate frames fand with the-chamber designed to receive turbid liquor, so that while the liquor flows through the lower channel into the frames the air passes through the upper channel from the frames to the said chamber. The other two channels communicate with the remaining frames and with the chamber, for filtcred liquor, and they serve, respectively, to conduct filtered liquor and air from these frames to the said chamber. Both chambers are'providcd with cocks for the outlet of the air collecting therein.

Iftheapparatus is'to be put into operation, the filtering battery, composed of the frames, the walls, and the chambers, is tightened up, as stated, and the cocks h h, u u, and p areclosed. Turbid liquor is then admitted by the cock 0 to the chamber Q, while at the same time the cock h is slowl opened until theliquorhas risen in the glass the said cock being thereupon closed. During this operation the liquor runs through the orifice iand the channel 1) into the framesM and displaces the air,'which passes through the slits l and the channel a into'the upper part of the chamber Q. In case the filtering material consists of sheets of paper, which are apt to be torn when there is a pressure of a liquid on one side-and air or gas on the other, suchsheets, when applied in the described apparatus, are secureagainst rupture, as with ordinary care no accumulation of air or gas adapted to endanger the paper will occur in the frames of the apparatus.
