AUTOMATIC PUMP.
EPBCIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,520, dated November 27, 1888.
Application filed August 26, 1987. Serial No. 247.938. (No model.) Patented in France August 26, 1886, No. 178,131, and in England March 19, 1887, No. 4,168.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Rumors ROMAIN, of Grenoble, in the Republic of France, have in vented a new and Improved Automatic Pump,
of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention will be first described, and,
then specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying 1o drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a side view of my improved form of pump, the pi essure-regulating mechanism and a portion of the air pump or pressure and its connections being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on line we of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the water-cylinder and its connections. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the apparatus, the view being taken on a line corresponding with the line y y of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a view of one of the outer ends of the plugvalve arranged in connection with the 2 water'cylinder.
In constructing such a pump as the one illustrated in the drawings above referred to I provide two cylinders, 10 and 11, the cylinder 10 being an air-compressing cylinder, in
which there is arranged a piston or plunger, 12, that is connected by a rod, 13, with the piston 14. of the cylinder 11, a reciprocating motion being imparted to the piston 14 in a manner to be hereinafter described. As the 5 piston 14 is so reciprocated, the piston 12 will be forced to follow its motion, and as the piston 12 moves in the direction of the arrow (shown in connection therewith in Fig. 1) air will be drawn in behind the piston through a port, 15, that leads to a chamber, 16, below the cylinder.
The entrance to the chamber 16 is controlled by a ball'valve, 1.7, that rests upon a seat formed in a plug, 18, and the bore of this plug communicates with a tube, 19, that is fed by an induction tube or pipe, 20, the air in ad Vance of the piston 12 at this time escaping through a port in the forward end of the cylinder, which port is controlled by a valve arranged in the valvecase 21, said valve being similar to the valve 22, that is shown in connection with the valve-case 23, the arrangement being such that the valves in the cases 21 and 23 will be forced from their seats as the piston 12 moves toward them, while the induction-valve 17 and a corresponding valve arranged in a valve-case, 21, will be forced to their seats as said piston advances toward them, but are free to rise from their seats as the piston recedes. The air delivered to the valvecases 21 and 23 passes thence to a tube,
25, to be carried therefrom bya tube, 26, to
a purifier, 27, said purifier consisting ofa vessel partially filled with water and provided with a tube, 28, that is in communication 6 with the tube 26, so that all air passing into the purifier will be discharged from the bottom of the pipe 28, and will bubble upward through the water contained in the vessel, to
be discharged through a pipe or tube, 29, that 0 leads to the cash or receptacle in which the wine, beer, or other liquid is stored.
The piston 14 of the cylinder 11 is moved to and fro by water-pressure, said water being introduced by means of a supply-pipe, 30, which leads to a pressure-regulating chamber, 31,theprcssure-regulatorconsistingofaspring, 32, that bears down upon the ball-valve 33, the tension of the spring being regulated by a set-screw, 31.
From the pressure-regulator the water is led by means of a pipe, 35, to a valve-case, 36, in which thereis arrangedaconicalplug-valve,37. The plug-valve 37 is provided with a central diaphragm or partition, 2, whereby there are 8 formed within the valve two chambers, aand b, the chamber 1) being provided with three ports, oneofwhich isin constant communication with the pipe 35 by way of a passage, 3,that is formed in the valve-case 36, while the other ports of 0 the valve are thrown into alternate communication with passages 4 and 5 of said valvecase, the passage 5 communicating with the forward end of the cylinder, while the passage 4 communicates with the rear end thereof. The 5 chamber a is also provided with three ports, one of which is in constant communication with a port or passage, 7, that leads to a discharge-pipe, 38, whilethe other two are thrown into alternate communication with passagesfi and 8, which communicate with the forward and rear ends of the piston, the arrangement being such that when water enters the chamber I) and passes thence through the passage 5 the piston will move in the direction of the arrow,(shown in connection therewith in Fig.3) the water behind the piston at this time escaping through the passage 8 to the chamber a and thence outward through the pipe 38.
In order that the valve may be rocked in its seat to so bring its ports into alternate communication with the passages 4 and 5 and G and 8, I pivotally connect a lever, 40, to the larger end of the valve, said lever extending outward through a recess, 0, in an annular flange, 11, that is formed upon the end of the valve, fixed stops 42 being arranged to prevent too great a throw of the lever. ihis lever-l0 isprovided with an adjustable weight, L3, and is connected by means of a link, 1 1-, with an arm, 45, that is rigidly connected to the connecting-rod 13,thc arm 45 being guided in ways 46, as best shown in Fig. 1. A pressure indicator or gage, 50, is connected by means of a pipe, 51, with the purifier 27.
Such being the general construction of my improved automatic pump, the operation is as follows: water under pressure being fed through the pipe 30 will pass upward beyond the valve 33, through the pipe 35, and enter the valve-chamber b, thence to find its way to the cylinder 11 by way of the passage 4 or 5, the particular passage through which the water passes depending upon the position of the Valve 37, and as the water acts to force the piston 14 forward or backward the piston 12 within the air-compressing cylinder 10 will also be forced forward or backward, and as the piston 12 is so moved the air forced by the piston into the connecting-pipe 25 will find its way through the pipe 26 to the purifier 27, and thence through the pipe 29 to the cask or vessel in which the beer or liquor is stored, and if a proper discharge-pipe be connected with said beer cask or vessel the contents of the cask will be forced upward and into the apartment where the discharge orifice or faucet of the cask is located.
The pressure maintained within the cask should not ordinarily exceed one or one-anda-halt' atmospheres, and as the pressure of the water would probably be constant the attend ant may regulate this pressure by turning the screw 34 downward when the pressure is exceeded, but by turning it upward when there is too small a pressure, indicated by the gage 50.
In case the water-supply should, for any cause whatsoever, :fail to operate, the necessary compression of the air may be obtained by means of a lever, to, that is pivotally mounted upon the frame of the pump and formed with an elongated slot, 9, which re ceives a stud or pin, 61, that projects outward from the rod 13. This lever is provided with a handle, (not shown in the drawings,) and when it is desired to increase the pressure the said handle is grasped and a reciprocating motion is imparted to thcpiston 12 by rocking the lever.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt- 1. The combination, with the water-eylinder 11, of the valvechaniber 36, having an inlet-passage, 3, and ports t and 5 at or near one end leading, respectively, to the opposite ends of the cylinder from the passage 3, and the disehargepassage 7 near the opposite end of the valve-chamber, the discharge-ports S 6, leading from passage 7 to opposite ends of cylinder, and the hollow oscillating p'lugvalve 37, having atransvcrsc partition, 2, forming chambers (L I), each having three openings, one opening in each chamber being always in register, respectively, with the inlet and discharge passages and the other two openings being alternately thrown in and out of register with their respective ports 4t 5 and S 6, substantially as set forth.
2. An automatic pump consisting of the wator-cylinder 11, having a piston, avalve-chamber providcd'with passages or ports leading to the opposite ends of the cylinder, a valve therein having a recessed flange and a stem at one end, a weighted lever loose on the stern and extending through the recess, a water-supply pipe leading into the valve-chamber, a prcssurcrcgulating chamber, 31, with which said pipe is connected, and a valve, 33, in said chamber, the air-cylinder 10, having a piston, a rod connecting both pistons to the lever 40, a hand-lever, 60, connected to said rod, two connected air-inlet passages at one side of said cylinder and leading to opposite ends thereof and provided with valves 17 and a common inlet-pipe, 20, two connected outlet-passages leading from opposite ends of the other side of the cylinder provided with inward-closing valves 22, a discharge-pipe, 38, common to both outlet-passages, a purifyingchamberinto which said pipe discharges, and an outletpipe for said purifier leading to the vessel or chamher to be charged, all combined substantially as set forth.
