NATURAL-GAS PROTECTIVE EXTlNGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,396, dated November 27, 1888.
To all [I l/101)] H HM/Z] concern: as, for example, when the pressure l'alls sudlle it known that 1, (minutes l HbltllliNltlt, denly much. lower than the normal. In this a citizen of the United ,States, esit'itng at (ihimanner the gas is shut oft, and hence it the cago, in the county of (look and State of ]llipressure is increased again no damage will be 5 uois, have invented a certain new and useful occasioned. 'lhethermostatd is so constructed Improvement in Natural-Gas Ilrotcctivc Exand arranged with respect to the flame or jct tinguishers, (Case 152,) of which the following 0 that as long as the jet is burning its contacts is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, will remain open, as shown. When the jet is reference being had to the accompanyingdrawextinguished, however, the eontactswill close. to ings, t't'irlning apart of this specification. Accidents of this weighted, its weight being sui'tieicnt, in consort have been of frequent occurrence hereto- 5 ncction with rctractile spring f, to turn the fore, and on this account natural gas espccock when said arm is released, so as to shut cially, which is highly explosive, has not oil the supply, the arm when so released t'allfound thcl'avor with the public whichit might ing to the position indicated by the dotted 7 otherwise have obtained. It will be understood that thegas-jet 0 should be supplied from the pipe at in such position and under such conditions that it will surely be extinguished when any other jet supplied from the same pipe is extinguished.

A gas protective extinguisher consisting of a cock or shut-oil" in the supply-pipe, in combination with a gas-jet supplied from said pipe, a thermostat placed in position to be heated by the jet, actuating mechanism for turning the cock or shut-oil", and an electromagnetic device in a battery-circuit with the thermostat, whereby on extinguishing the jet the electromagnetic device is operated to release the actuating mechanism, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the gas supply pipe, oi a cock or shutoff included therein, actuating mechanism for closing said shut-oil,
an electromagnetic device normally retaining or holding out of operation the said actuating mechanism, a gasjet supplied from the said gas-so ppl y pipe, a thermostat in position to be heated thereby, and a batterycireuit through the electromagnetic device, which is closed when the jet is extinguished, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the supply-pipe (1 ofa iet, c. supplied from said pipe, a thermostat heated by said jet and standing normally open when heated a shutoff included in said supply-pipe, and an electromagnetic device whereby said shut oil is operated when the jet is extinguished and the contacts of the thermostat closed, the circuit of the electromagnetic device being opened by the ClOSiHg of the shut-off, substantially as described.
