SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,383, dated November 27, 1888..

HarvesterFrames, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description,refereuce be ing had to the accompanying drawings, maklog part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in harvester-frames; and it consists in providing a metal-pipe frame of the form substantially as shown and hereinafter described.
My invention also relates to the detail and combination of parts, as set forth in the claims.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a harvester-frame embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an isometrical perspective View from the rear. Figv 3 is aview in perspective oi'a bracket-support for the harvester platform-frame, the said bracket being turned partially around and over to more clearly show its construction. Fig. at is a view in perspective of the rear journal-box for crank-shaft and pipecoupler; Fig. 5, a rear elevation of the harvester; and Figs. 6 and 7, a modification of bracket in Fig. 3, showing the same in side and end elevation.

Letter A represents the front and B the rear sills, O the outside sills,and D the inside sills.
The ends of the sills have a screw-thread adapted to a similar screw-thread in the corner-irons or elbows E. The said elbows are also provided with an upwardly-projected angle-fiange, a, adapted to support the framepieces F, which are secured to the flange by the bolts athrough perforations a, the framepiece F at the front and rear of the elevatorframe extending upwardly from the outer sill, O, and curved over transversely on the machine to positions inside of the inner sill, D, to form supports for the elevator and the binding mechanism. Their location and general shape are clearly shown in Fig. 5. There is also provided on said elbows a downwardlyprojected lug, a, adapted to support the truss G, the lower ends of which are provided wlth screw threads and a threaded nut, a by which the said trusscord may be adjusted over the segment H. The said segment is made of suitable cast metal, and is provided at its upper end with a groove, a or other suitable means to secure the truss-cord to the segment, and is also provided with a flanged portion, a", semicircular in cross section, adapted to fit the outside sill, O, by which the segment is secured to the sill by the through-bolts a.
As a support for the rear end of inside sill, D,and crankshaft I, a hanger, J, is provided, having a neck portion, 12, provided with a female screw adapted to the screw-thread on the inside sill, D, and a body portion, 12, having an annular bore, b, adapted to fit the sill B, and a downwardlyprojected neck portion, N, a journalbox, 11?, integral therewith, for the rear end of crank-shaft I, and a downwardly-projected lug, Z), (see Fig. 1,) similar to a, on the elbow E, through which the end of the inner truss-cord is passed and secured by a threaded nut in the same way as the outer one. The front end of said sill is supported by a coupler, K, having an'inwardlyprojected portion, b provided with'a female screw adapted to the screwthread on the end of the inside sill, D, and body portion 1), the annular bore of which is adapted to the cir cumference of the front sill, A. The said coupler is also provided with a downwardlyprojected lug,f, similar to that shown at a on elbows E, for the support of the front end of the inner truss-rod, G. There is also provided,and integral with said coupler K,au upwardly-projected lug, if, having a perforation for the tongue-bolt b The front end of the crank-shaft I is supported by a hanger, L, the upper end of which is provided with a body portion, (2, semicircular in cross-section and adapted to the circumference of the inside sill, D, and the through-bolts cl secure the hanger to the girder. In the lower portion of the said hanger there is providedajournal-box, (Z for the front end of the crank-shaft I and an out wardly-projected lug, (i forming a support for the inner end of the finger-bar M.
The tongue support and brace N is formed substantially as shown, the rear end, d*, being connected to thebar M by bolt d. The middle portion of the brace N is provided with a laterally-projected flange and lug, d, by which the brace is secured to the sill by a bolt, d-', as shown. There is also provided an upwardlyprojeeted lug, (1, having a perforation for the tongue-bolt b, as shown. A brace, X, is pro vided, having one of its ends secured to the inner segment H, the other end to the lingerbar M. The inner segment II is constructed and secured to its sill in a manner quite similar to that of the outer segment H, hereinbcfore referred to, the half-slceve (fill the latter being considered the essential equivalent of the flanged portion a of the former.
The shoe 0, which is preferably made of malleable cast'iron, has on its upwardly-pro jected front portion shoulders 7:, semicircular in cross section, adapted to the circumference of the sill A. The rear portion of the said shoe is provided with shoulders h and flanges h, adapted to the angle 7f of the bar M and a rearwardly-projected lug, h, and is secured to the said bar by bolts through the shoulders 71 and lug 71.
Plate P is provided as a support for the innor end of sill B and the rear frame-bar, Q, of the harvester-platform, the said plate hav ing shoulders 7f, semicircular in cross-section and adapted to fit the rear sill, B, a horizontal body portion, if, and a downwardly-projccted flange, it, having ontwardly-1n'ojected ribs it. These parts are adapted to embrace and sup port the platform rear bar, Q. There is also provided, and integral with said plate, a j ournalbox, 7r, forthe shaft 7.4 of the platform-canvas roller (See Fig. 1.) The inner end of the platform-bar Q is bent up (see Figs. 2 and 5) and bolted to a hanger, R, bolted to theinside sill, D.
The inner end of sill. A is connected to the upper front portion of the shoe 0, and the fingerbar M connected to and supported by thelower rear portion of the said shoe, the inner end being extended to and supported by the in side sill, D, through the hanger L, and the inner end of sill B is connected to the upper rear portion of the plate 1?, the framebar Q being connected to the lower front portion of said plate, the inner end extended to and supported by the inner sill through the hanger It; but, if preferred, the ends of the bars M and Q may be directly connected to the inside sill, D. By this feature of overlapping and bracing of the sills A and B and the bars M and Q a rigid connection is formed between the platform and machinery supporting frames; or, if preferred, the rear bar, Q, may be made of pipe, as '1, (see Figs. 6 and 7,) the same as sill B, and the two connected, as shown in Fig. 6, by a depending bracket, S, having an upper portion, 7.1, semicircular in cross section, adapted to fit the sill B, to which it is bolted, as shown, a web portion,j, and a cylindrical portion, 76, having an annular bore adapted to the circumference of the pipe-bar T, into which the bar may be passed and secured by the bolts k The bottom board,7.-F', has a transverse groove, Zn", and is bolted to bar T, as shown.

The studaxle U is of the form substantially as shown, the U-shaped frame-piece V, supported by adjustable supports on the outside and inside sills, G and D, forming a support for the shaft \V and turned back on itself, forming the stud-axle U, as shown, which supports the pinion m and wheel n.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the sills A, B, and O of the rectangular harvester-frame, of clbows E, each having an upwardly-projected angle-flange, u, the pieces F, set upon the elbows and secured to the flanges, downwardly-projected lugs a on the elbows, and the truss-rod G, secured at either end in the lugs a, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the sills A, B, and G of a rectangular harvester-frame, of elbows E,eaoh having a downwardly-projected lug, a to receive either end of the truss-rod G, trussrod G, and the segment II, as asupport for the truss-rod G, said segment having a flange portion semicircular in cross-section to fit the outside sill, G, by which the segment is secured to the sill, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in a metal-pipe harvester-frame, of the front and rear pipe sills, A and B, the pipe inside sill,D,and the coupler J, having a neck portion, 1), a body portion, b, a downwardly-projected neck, b, a journalbox integral therewith, the shaft I, supported in the journalbox, the coupler K, with its downwardly -pro ected lug as a support for the front end of the truss-rod, a truss-support, b, and the trussrod, the rear end secured therein, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, in a metal-pipe harvester-frame, of the front and rear pipe sills, A B, the pipe inside sill, D, the truss, the tonguc-bolt, and the coupler K, having a neck portion, If, a body portion, b", lug I), and truss-supporting lug f, and the truss-supporting lug b" on the coupler J, substantiallyas described, and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a harvester-frame, the combination, with the inner sill, D, the crank-shaft I, and finger-bar M, of the hanger L, secured to said sill and having therein a journal-box, (P, for the crank-shaft I and a downwardly-projecting flange, (P, as a support for the inner end of the finger-bar M, substantially as set forth.
6. In a metal pipe harvester frame, the tongue support and brace N, rigidly secured to the sill A, having an upwardly-projected lug, d having a perforation therethrough to receive the tongue-bolt, and a tongue-bolt, b, the rear end of said brace projecting rearwardly, as shown, and rigidly secured to the finger-bar M, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination of the sill A, shoe 0,
and finger-bar M, said shoe having shoulders h, semicircular in cross-section, shoulders h and flanges h, adapted to the angle h of the finger-bar M, substantially as described.
8. In a harvester-frame, the sill A, shoe 0, finger-bar M, hanger L, and inside sill, D, the bar M connected to the hanger, and all combined and operated as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
9. In a metal-pipe harvester-frame, the combination of the sill B, bracket S, having its upper portion, 70 secured to the sill B, a downwardly-projected Web portion, j, and a cylinder portion adapted to embrace the end of the frame-bar T, and in which the said bar may be secured, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
10. In a harvester-frame, the combination of the sill D, truss-rod G, segment H, brace X, and finger-bar M, the segment H forming a connection between the truss-rod and sill, and the brace X connecting the segment and fingerbar, the trussG being further connected to the sill D at its ends by suitable coupling devices.
11. The U-shaped frame-pieceV,.supported on the outside and inside sills, O D, and form'- ing a support for the shaft W, the free end of said framepiece being turned back on itself, forming the stud-axle U, for the purpose substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
12. The combination, in a harvester-frame, of the pipe-frame bar T, bottom boards,k",having transverse grooves 7t, bracket 70*, rollerbearer I0 and bracket S, substantially as set forth;
13. In a harvester, the adjustable U-shaped frame-piece V, supported on the outside and inside sills on the supporting-frame, substantially as shown, as a support for the shaft W and the gear-wheels m and n, and having the stud-axle U at the end of the U-shaped portion of the said frame-piece, and means for adjusting the said framepiece, substantially as set forth.
