HERMAN NVESLE AND HENRY VESLE, OF MEDFORD, WISCONSIN.
WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,133, dated N ovemberZO, 1888.
Application filed February 14, 1888. Serial No. 264,013. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that we, HERMAN WEsLE- and HENRY VVEsLE,both of Medford, in the county of Taylor and Stateof Visconsin, have invented a new and Improved WagonWhecl, of which tion, partly in section, ofa portion of the Wheel-` rim and spokes. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the two halves ofthe hub, and Fig. et is a transverse section taken on line .fr a: in Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in all the views.
The object of our invention is to construct a wheel entirely of iron or steel and to arrange the various parts of the wheel so that they may be readily tightened when worn or accidentally loosened.
Our invention consists in a wagon-wheel formed of a metallic hubl in two sections, each provided with arms, which alternate with the arms of the other section forming adjust able mortises for receiving the sockets of the spokes, spokes formed of` steel or iron tubes and provided with sockets at opposite ends, the sockets at the inner end being received in the hub and the sockets of the outer end being adapted to receive the rim or tire, and a rim or tire provided with aninternal flange for receiving the grooved ends of the spokes, all as hereinafter more fully described.
The axle-box A, tted tothe axle B, is tapered externally to receive the parts a b of the hub C. The smaller end of the axle-box A is threaded externally to receive the collar D,by which the hub is held upon the axle-box. The parta of the hub is provided with a sand-rim, c, with the arms d projecting from the flange e parallel with the axis of the hub and separated by 'intermediate spacesf. Upon' the flange e are formed apertured ears g for receiving the bolts h, by which the halves of the hub are fastened together. rlhe part b of the hub dif'- fers in construction from the part a only in having the outer end t' reduced in diameter to V correspond in size with the collar D, the said part b being provided with the flange c', the,v
arms d', and the intermediate spaces f. Itis also provided with apertured ears g for receiving the bolts h. rIhe arms d of the parta ofthe hub are adapted to t in between the arms d of the part b of the hub. This arrangement of the two halves provides mortises in the spaces f f between the arms d d', which are adjustable by the lengthwise expansion and contraction of the hub. To the mortises thus formed are fitted the sockets E, which are bored and internally threaded to receive the spokes F. Thesaid sockets are also provided with' studs j, which enter the bore of the spokes F. The outer extremities of the spokes are externally threaded to receive the internally-threaded sockets G, which are provided with studs le, litted to the bore of the spokes. Each socket G is provided with a transverse groove, Z, in its outer end and with a lug, m, in the middle of the groove. To the spokes thus arranged is fitted the rim H, which consists of a band of iron a little thicker than the tire commonly used, furnished with a central flange, n, provided with notches 0 for receiving the lugs m of the sockets G. By screwing up the bolts 7L the sockets E E are clamped firmly in the hub, the two parts of the hub being rmly drawn together upon the sockets E. The ends of the spokes F are provided with oppositelyarranged threads, one being right hand and the other left, so that by turning the spokes the grooved sockets G may `be pressed u p against the tire or rim H.
A wheel of this kind having no wood in its construction is not subject to shrinkage or decay, and may at any time be adjusted if the parts become loosened by accident or wear.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a vehicle-wheel,the combination of the hub-sections a b, provided with the arms d d and the lianges e e', having apertured ears g g', and the bolts h, passing through the apertures of the said ears, substantially as herein shown and described.
2.' In a vehicle-wheel, the combination of a hub formed of the parts a b, adapted to re-V cei/ve the axle-box and provided with arms d d', the sockets E, clamped in the spaces between the arms d d', the spokes F, received in the sockets E, the sockets G, attached to the outer IOO end of the spokes F, andthe rim H, adapted to receive the sockets G, substantially as d-escribed.
In a vehicle-wheel, the combination of a hub formed of the screw-threaded tapering axle-box A, the collar D, the parts a b, fitted -V to the axle-box and provided with arms d d', the sockets E, clamped in the spaces between the arms d d', the spokes F, received in the sockets E E, the sockets G, attached to the outer ends of the spokes F, and the rim H, adapted to receive the sock ets G, substantially as specified. Y
4. The combination of spoke-sockets E G,
