Description

(No Model.) I w. H.-PR.AZER
GAP FOR FUSES. I No. 392,915. v Patented Nov. 18, 1888.
UNITE STATES PATENT anion.
WILLIAM H. FRAZER, OF MULLAN, IDAHO TERRITORY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO JOHN MULLAN, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
CAP FOR FUSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,915, dated November 13, 1888,
Application filed July 26, 1888. Serial No. 281,086.
vTo all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. FRAZER, of Mullan, in the county of Shoshone and Territory of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gaps or Shells for Fuses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a cap or shell than can be readily attached to a fuse without danger to the operator; and it consists in the details of construction and arrangement hereinafter specified. It has been a common practice to fasten the shell to the fuse by compressing the body of the shell with pinchers, the point of a knife, or the teeth of the operator, which has often been the means of causing the shell to explode and injure the person handling it. My invention is designed to obviate this danger. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cap or shell attached to a fuse. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the cap before the fuse is inserted. Fig. 3 shows the cap ready to be closed on the fuse, and Fig. 4 is a detail.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
A is the fuse, and B is the main body of the cap or shell. At its mouth or open end the shell is split diagonally in two places opposite each other, as shown, and the parts I) b are bent outward, as shown. On the inside of these parts I) b the points or projections b are raised by swaging or otherwise.
0 is a tube, which fits over the main body of the shell and turns freely thereon. This tube is provided at one end with two V-shaped recesses, c, opposite each other. It is also provided about midway of its length with raised portions 0', which serve as catches for the thumb and finger and enable the operator to turn it more easily.
The shell is attached to the fuse in the follow- (No model.)
ing manner: The fuse being inserted in the shell B, the tube 0 is pushed up so that its end shallbe fiush with the open end of the shell and the bent-out portions b shall be in the V- shaped recesses 0, as shown in Fig. 3. B turning the tube 0 round on the shell the bentout portions 1) will be turned back onto the fuse and the projections I) forced into it, thus securely attaching the shell to the fuse, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. A fnse-cap split at its open end and having a portion of its body adjacent to the split bent outward, combined with a tube "fitting over and movable on the body of the fuse-cap, substantially as specified.
2. A fuse-cap split at its open end and having a portion of its body adjacent to the split bent outward, said bent-out portion having in ner projections, combined with a tube fitting over and movable on the body of the fuse-cap, substantially as specified.
3. A fuse-cap split at its open end and having a portion of its body adjacent to the split bent outward, combined with a tube fitting over and movable on the body of the fuse-cap, and provided at one end with recesses adapted to engage the bent-out portions of the fuse cap, substantially as described.
4. A fuse-cap split at its open end and having a portion of its body adjacent to the split bent outward, said bent-out portion having inner projections, combined with a tube fitting over and movable on the body of the fuse-cap, said tube being provided with raised portions in its body and with V-shaped recesses at one end adapted to engage with the bent-out portions of the fuse-cap, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
' WM. 1-1. FRAZER. [1. s]
