I I w NiTE STATES ATENT Price.
GEORGE WARBURTON, OF N ORRISTOVVN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-H ALF TO JAMES MOOK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHUTTER=W ORKER.
SPECIPICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,896, dated November 13, 1889.
Application filed July 20, 1888. Serial No. 280,535.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WARBURTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at N orristown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Operating IVindow Blinds, &c; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in window-shutter workers; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby the shutters can be opened and closed without raising the sash, all as will be hereinafter fully explained and claimed.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents an inside view of a window, showing my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is a top or plan view. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device detached from the window. Fig. 4 is a side view of the part B. Figs. 6, 7, and 8 are detail views of the drums OD. Fig. 5 is a plan view of my device in modified form.
The object of my device is to provide means for opening and closing window-shutters without raising the window-sash from the inside of the room, as will be further described.
Referring by letter to the annexed draw ings, A designates the window-sill, at each end of which is provided a slot in which is seated drums D and G, that are connected to one another by an endless band, (2, the drum 0 being arranged within the room and the drum D on the outside of the window. These drums are provided with flanges which are grooved to receive the endless band. The flange in the drum 0 is cut away, as at a, to permit said band to pass within the circular space and be connected to the postpivot a of said drum, which said band is connected firmly to the drum D bya pin, a Thus when one drum is revolved the other revolves simultaneously with it.
As the pair of drums on each side of the window are alike both in construction and (No model.)
operation, I will describe only one pair. The
drum 0 has an outwardly semicircular flange,
B, having a series of perforations, b, in which engages a pin, 0 on the free end of a hand lever, O, that has a handle, 0, and a pivoted thumb-piece, 0 which when operated withdraws said pin 0 from a perforation in the flange B. This drum 0 consists of an upper portion and a lower portion. The upper portion has a central pivot pin or stud, a which has a T-shaped head, I), that passes through a perforation, If, in the lower plate, and is keyed thereto by a fastening-plate, b having a slot, If, which engages the T-shaped head I) aforesaid.
It will be seen that when the drum 0 is turned the drum D simultaneously turns with it,through the medium of the endless band (1, thereby opening or closing the shutter, as the case may be, by means of the pin or lug on the plate e, secured to the under edge of said shutter, being pivoted to the drum D at d, thereby operating the shutters without raising the sash, and the shutter can be locked at any point, whether closed or open, by the pin 0 entering one of the perforations in the flange or plate B.
In Fig. 5 of the drawings I have shown my device in a modified form, wherein instead of the grooves in the drum I use segments of gearing upon the drums O D, having a horizontal shaft, K, connecting the two drums, said shaft having pinions 7t 7t secured upon each end, which mesh with the segments upon the drums, the shaft being passed through perforations in brackets k 70 secured to the window-sill, the segments and pinions communicating motion from one drum to the other, thus dispensing with the endless band.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The within described shutter -worker, consisting of the drum composed of the upper section having the grooved flange, thumbcatch 0 c and central T-shaped post, the key Z) therefor, the lower section having the vertical semicircular flange, and flange B, having perforations b, the drum D, having the offset to engage the pivot-pin b on the casting on the shutter, and the hand connecting these In testimony whereolI affix my signature in drums, all arranged and operating as and for presence of two witnesses. the purpose set forth. t
2. The drums G and D, connected by the GEORGE XVARBURTON. 5 endless band, the drum 0 provided with the semicircular perforated flange adapted to reeeive the pin on the hand-lever, substantially as described.
