WASHiNG- MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,880, dated November 13, 1888.
Application filed October 27, 1887. Serial No.` 253,5f11. (No model.)
T LZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that l, JOHN PLETTNER, a citizen ofthe United States of America, residing at Ai,in the county of Fulton and State of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to .certain new and useful improvements in washing-machines; and it consists in the construction and arrangement ofthe parts thereof, which will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out inthe claim.
The essential feature of my invention is the provision and use of sliding washer-frames acting conjunctively with and against a centrallysituated oscillating rubber, which is, in connection with a rock-shaft, operated by adepending swinging lever.
The object of my invention is to facilitate the washing of clothes by the sliding washers drawing the same against the oscillating rubber, and thereby acting similarly to the ordinary form of wash-board.
A further object of my invention, is to provide positively-acting mechanism in connection with the machine for removingthe same from one position to another.
I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate simi- A lar parts in the several views, and in whichstraps, I), are secured over the upper united ends of the legs B, and half-boxes are secured to the inner sides thereof, in which the rockshaft C has bearing. The one end of the said shaft C project-s outward from the side of one pair of legs, and has a depending lever, D, secured thereon, which has a weight,d,mounted on its lower end and a handle or crossbar, D', secured to the upper portion thereof and held in position in connection therewith by means of a metallic strap, d.
The shaft C has an arm, C', formed therewith at an angle thereto, and ispivoted atits free end to the upper end of a pitmau-bar, G2, by means of metallic straps c. The said pitmanbar passes through a slot in the lids of the washing-box, and is secured at its lower end to one side of a semi-cylindrical rubber, E, by metallic straps c2. The rubber E is formed with a series of slats, e2, arranged closely together and having apertures e therein to permit the water to pass therethrough. The slats e2 are held and supported in position by two circular end frames, E', which are formed with stub-shafts engaging with journal-boxes e, secured to the inner sides of the box A. Suitable cross-braces, e3 and e, are secured to the end frames, E', the braces e4 being of angular formation and adapted to prevent displacement of the slats e2.
To the upper portion of the end frames, E', arms E2 are pivotally secured, the said arms being integrally formed with the upper portion v bent portion of tie-rods F pass, the upper por- 9o tion of said tie-rods being secured in the sidesofthe washing-box and limit the movement of the frames F.
To the under side of the box A ajournalbox, g, is secured, through which the bent portion of a lever-arm, G', passes, and which projects from said box g along the side of the box, and is adapted to engage with a cleat, b', secured to the side thereof. From the-journalbox g the said lever G extends downward and is secured to a stub-shaft upon which a wheel, G, is mounted. By raising the lever G and IOO placing the same between the 'parts of the cleat b the box A is raised, and by grasping the hand-grips a the machine can be readily moved from one position to another'.
The clothes to be washed are placed between the frames F and the centrally-situated rubber E. By swinging the lever D from one side to the other the .rock-shaft C is set in motion, which in turn oscillates the rubber E through the medium of the pitman-bar C2. As the rubber E is oscillated the one frame F is drawn toward the rubber and the other forced away therefrom. The clothes are alternately drawn toward and fall away fro u1 the rubber E by this movement, and as they are brought up to the rubber thc parts are so timed that they will be held thereagainst until the said rubber passes partially over the surface thereof. Vhen the clothes are drawn towardV the rubber E, the water is partially wrung ont of the same, and when released therefrom fall into the water and are rinsed until they are again gathered and brought toward the rubbcrE by the sliding washers F.
VThe clothes are quickly and thoroughly Washed by my improved form of Washer and the dirt eradicated therefrom by an alternate rubbing and rinsing process, as above described.
The utility, convenience, and adaptability of my improved machine being obviously apparent, it is unnecessary to further enlarge upon the same herein.
IIaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a Washing-machine, the combination oi the Washing-box having the end de'leetors, A', the rock-shaft mounted above said box in the upper united ends of the angularly-arranged lcgsland having the central integral shortarm, C, the said legsv being mounted in pairs on each side of the box, as set forth, the centrallysituated oscillating rubber having end circular' frames journaled in the inner sides of the box, the pitman-bar connected to the central arm, C', of the roclesllaft C at its upper end and to the center of one edge of the oscillating rubber at its lower end, the curved semi-rotary washer-frames mounted on each side of the central rubber and pivotally secured tothe end circular frames thereof, the tie-rods F', connected to the washer-frames and to the inner sides ol` the box to limit the movement of said frames, and the depending swinging weighted lever for operating the parts, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence ol" two witnesses.
JOHN ILETTNEP.
