Definitions

  • ABSTRACT A tape stringer for sliding clasp fasteners, comprising a tape web portion and a stiffened, inextensible, elongated cord formed separately from the tape web and consisting of a plurality of textile fibres bonded together by an adhesive, said cord being secured by weaving or knitting to a longitudinal edge of the tape to form therealong a laterally projecting flange or bead.
  • This invention relates to sliding clasp fasteners, and more particularly to an improved stringer tape for such fasteners.
  • a sliding clasp fastener comprises a pair of stringer tapes having a web portion and a laterally projecting flange or bead formed at one longitudinal edge of each tape and a row of interlocking fastener elements secured to the flanges and extending longitudinally of the tape.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a tape stringer of the type mentioned which is simple in construction and may be produced easily and economically.
  • the tape stringer comprises a tape web portion and a stiffened, inextensible, elongated cord formed separately from the tape web and consisting of a plurality of textile fibres bonded together by an adhesive compound, said cord being secured to one longitudinal edge of the tape web and forming therealong a laterally projecting flange or bead.
  • the flange may have a core of non-elastic material to further impart an inextensible characteristic to the element-carrying tape edge.
  • FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a fragmentary portion of a slide fastener stringer tape provided with a beaded edge portion at one longitudinal edge thereof according to the invention
  • FIGS. 2a to 20 are detailed perspective views showing different arrangements of sliver fibres constituting the bead-forming cord.
  • FIG. 3 is view similar to FIGS. 2a through 2c, but showing a modified bead construction.
  • the improved stringer tape I construction which is generally indicated at 10, comprises a tape web portion 11 and a laterally projecting flanged or beaded portion 12.
  • the flanged portion 12 consists of a plurality of textile fibres 13 such as cotton sliver which are bonded together by a suitable adhesive compound 14 to provide an elongated unitary cord of inextensible property.
  • the bead-forming cord 12 is formed separately from the tape web portion 11 and secured to one longitudinal edge of the tape by weaving or knitting operation.
  • the bead or cord 12 is shown as having a circular cross-section, however, it may be provided in different sectional forms, if desired. Thickness of the cord 12 may be determined by the size of the fastener elements to be secured thereto. With fasteners of larger sizes, a plurality of cords of the same thickness may be used as particularly shown in FIG. 20.
  • FIGS. 2a and 2b show on enlarged scale different beadforming cord construction. It will be noted that no twist is imparted to the sliver fibres 13 in the example shown in FIG. 2b.
  • the degree of stiffness of the bead desired for a particular field of application of the slide fastener may be controlled by the choice of an adhesive compound or glue for bonding the sliver fibers together according to the invention.
  • the cord 12 thus obtained presents suitable resiliency and smooth surface texture which will permit the fastener elements to be firmly anchored to and aligned regularly along the beaded marginal edge of the stringer tape.
  • the cord 12 may incorporate a non-elastic core material 15 preferably in the nature of a cord, string, thread, filament or the like, as shown in FIG. 3.
  • a stringer tape for sliding clasp fasteners comprising a tape web portion and a cord formed separately from the tape web and secured to a longitudinal edge thereof to form therealong a flange for mounting fastener elements, said cord having a central, longitudinally extending reinforcing core and a multiplicity of longitudinally extending fibers bonded together and to said core by an adhesive that is separate from said fibers and core and occupies intersticial spaces thereamong.
