NITED EBENEZER MOLANE, OF ZINOITE, MISSOURI.
BED-PLATE AND BEARING FOR HOISTING- DRUMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,815, dated November 13, 1888.
Application filed June 15, 1888. Serial No, 277,182. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, Ennnnzan MoLANn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Zincite, in the county of Jasper and State 5 of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Plates and Bearings for Hoisting-Drums; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the bed- Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite side; and Fig. 3 is a front edge View of the frictional driving wheel, showing the same bearing against or in contact with the large wheel.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to improvements in bed-plates and bearings for hoisting-drums fthat class wherein the hoisting drum is driven by means of frictional contact; and it consists in the improved construction and an rangement of parts whereby the wear between the driving-wheel and the large wheel with which it is in contact is compensated for by a 0 novel means of adjustment, which will be hereinafter more fully described and referred to.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, the letters A A indicate the bedplates of my improved device, which are sup- 5 ported at their ends by cross-beams B B, said bed-plates being secured to the beams by bolts 0 0, provided with suitable nuts, D D. At one of the ends of bed-plates A A are located pillow-blocks E E, having their base-pieces o provided with longitudinal slots F F, registering with similar slots, G G, in the bed-plates. Through the slots toward the outer ends of the base-pieces of the pillow-blocks the bolts 0 0 pass, while through the inner slots shorter 5 bolts, H H, are inserted from the under sides of the bed-plates, and are secured on top of the base-pieces by set-nuts I I. J ournaled in the bearings of the pillow-blocks E E is the shaft of a driving-wheel, J, said bearings consisting of the cover and lower half of the box K and L, respectively secured by bolts M M, provided with locking-nuts N N.
Secured to the center of the bed-plates A A are pillow-blocks O O, the j carnal-bearings of said pillow-blocks being braced by inclined braces P P. These journal-bearings carry the shaft of a large wheel, Q, said shaft also carrying the hoisting-drum employed by me, and which has been made the subject of aseparate application for patent of even date herewith, Serial No. 277,181.
Secured to the bolts M, which connect one side of the pedestal-caps with the covers of the journal-bearings of the drivewheel, are adjusting arms or rods R It, the other ends of said arms passing through the central pillowblocks, 0 O, and provided with locking-nuts S S. By means of these adjusting arms or rods the periphery of the drive-wheel may always be kept in close contact with the periphery of the large wheel, this being accomplished by loosening the nuts I I and G G and tightening the nuts S S on the ends of the rods, when the pillowblocks E E may readily be drawn in closer contact with the large wheel and se curely kept in this position by simply tightening the nuts. This arrangement is found particularly advantageous, inasmuch as in wheels of this character the wear, by reason of the frictional contact, diminishes the effectiveness of the operation of the drive-wheel to a great extent.
By reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings it will be seen that the peripheries of both wheels are of the same width, being considerably wider than is ordinarily the case in order to give them a greater bearing-surface and to render the friction between the same as great as pos sible, and that the ends of the driving-wheel J are provided with flanges forming a way or track for the large wheel I.
From the foregoing description, taken in -=connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my improvement will be readily understood without requiring further explanation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of the bed-plates having longitudinal slots in their ends and also provided with central pillow-blocks rigidly secured thereto, said pillow-blocks being each provided with a perforation, the large when journaled in said pillow-blocks, the end pillow-blocks provided with longitudinal slots registering with the longitudinal slots in the bed-plates, the bolts passing through said slots 5 and provided with set-nuts, the drive-wheel journaled in beuringsin said end pillow-blocks and the ndjustingrods having one end rigidly secured to the end pillow-blocks and the other end screw-threaded and passing through the 1 o perforation in the central pillow-blocks and adapted to receive set-nuts, substantially as described.
In testimony thatIclaim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
