GODFRIED LAURE, OF IIURON, DAKOTA TERRITORY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO T. J. MGBRIDE, OF VINNIPEG, CANADA.
STRAW OR HAY BURNING FURNAOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392.8 l2, dated November 13, 1888.
Serial No. 269,311. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GoDrRInD Linen, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of lrIuron, in the county of Beadle and Territory of Dakota, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Straw or I'Iay Burning Furnaces; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figurel is a perspective view of my iniproved straw or hay burning` furnace. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken through the center of the partly-cylindrical shell or easing and the magazine.
Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to straw or hay burning furnaces, and it consists in the im proved construction and combination of parts of the same, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the shell or casing, partly cylindrical in form and provided at one edge with a hinged door, which, when closed, forms a cylindrical shell or casing. This shell or casing is supported upon a frame, B, constructed of side pieces, C, and crossed lower pieces, D, the rearwardly-projecting one of which is provided with a stop, E. A crescent-shaped sheet, F, is secured to the upper edge of this partly-cylindrical shell, and has projecting therefrom two or more hot -air-condueting tubes, G, which extend either to rooms above the furnace or to rooms on the saine floor as the furnace.
II indicates the smokcpipe for conducting the products of combustion from the straw magazine, and is attached to the upper ends of the frame, as more clearly shown in 1, and has its lower edge struclrup', as shown at I, and is provided at its intermediate forward portion with a hook, J. The top of the fuelmagazine slides vertically upon this pipe and consists of the conical body formed with an annular flange, K, andan apertured downwardlyprojecting edge, L, and provided with handles M, and near its upper portion with a notched plate, N. A collar, O, is secured to the upper inner portion of this cover and prevents the said cover, when sliding` upon the pipe, from playing laterally thereon, which would cause the cover, when being adjusted, to bind upon the pipe.
T denotes the straw-burning magazine, the peculiar construction of which I make no claim for in this application. This magazine is provided with handles U, doors V and XV, respectively, through which the fuel may be lighted and attended to, and with a draft-cup, X, communicating with a perforated drafttube, Y, in the bottom of the magazine. This magazine iainclosed within the partlyeylinl drical shell or easing and is supported upon the cross-pieees of the frame and abuts against the stop E, which prevents the magazine from being placed too far in the rear of the shell or casing.
The operation of my invention is as follows: After the magazine has been filled with fuel (straw or hay) it is placed within the casing, and the cover is lowered to fit with its downwardlyprojecting edge therein or is adjusted vertically, as may be desired, by means of the hooks upon the stove-pipe and the notched plate of the cover, so as to regulate the draft by means of the apertures in the downwardlyprojecting edge ofthe cover. The fuel is now lighted through the upper door of the maga` zine, and the draft-cup in the bottom thereof is regulated by means of a sliding damper, X', (shown only in Fig. 2,) in the saine manner as is shown and described in my former application, iiled December 27, 1887, Serial No. 259,066, so as to cause the desired draft. The door ofthe shell or casing is provided with circular apertures Z, which are encircled by annular flanges Z', which impinge upon the magazine and prevent thehot air from escaping through the apertures of the door. Through two of these apertures project one of the handles and the draft-cup of the magazine, while the other apertures permit the doors in the magazine to be opened and the fire attended to. The cold air between the magazine and the easing or shell becomes heated and ascends ICO 2 segale What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a frame, substantially as herein described, a partlycylindrical shell or casing, and a smoke-pipe supported by the upper ends of said frame, of a removable magazine and an adjustable top.
2. The combination, with a frame, substantially as herein described, a stop upon said frame, a partly-cylindrical shell or casing, a crescent-shaped top sheet secured to the upper edge of said shell or casing, hot-air tubes in the said top piece and communicating with the interior of the easing, and a hinged door, of a stove-pipe supported by the upper ends of said frame, and an adjustable cover secured thereon.
3. The combination, with the frame, substantially as described, of a partly cylindrical shell supported thereon, a crescent-shaped top sheet secured to the upper edge of said frame, hot-air-eonducting tubes secured in said top piece and communicating with the interior of the shell or casing, and a hinged door secured in one of the side edges of the shell or casing, a removable straw-magazine, a vertically-adjustable topand a smoke-pipe.
4. The combination of a frame, substantially as described, a smoke-pipe secured to the upper end of the same and provided with a struck-up lower end, and a hook upon said smoke-pipe, with a conical top having handles attached thereto, a notched strip secured to its upper edge, and a collar secured to the interior top portion thereof, whereby the said cover is retained against lateral movement when being adjusted.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
