FLY-WHEEL-CLUTCHING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,759, dated November 13, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J nsus ALVA ROMANO and ERNEST ALBERT BARTON, of Oelaya, State of Guanajuato, Mexico, have invented a new and Improved Fly-Wheel-lutching Device for Sewing-Machines, of which the followa ing is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to an automatic loose and fast attachment for sewing-machines, and has for its object to render their manipulation more convenient and less troublesome, and also to provide a means whereby the fly-wheel may be made to revolve with the shaft in one direction and independently thereof when turned in a contrary direction, and also whereby the said fly-wheel may be virtually disconnected from the drivingshaft of the machine, so as to turn independent of the said shaft in either direction.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Fig. t illustrates, respectively, a front elevation, a side view, and a bottom plan view, of the locking-bolt. Fig. 5 illustrates, respectively, a front and side elevation of the latch; and Fig. 6 is a partial plan view of the shaft, illustrating the location of the aperture therein adapted to receive the latch.
The drive-shaft 10 is provided with a diamctrical aperture, 11, which aperture for the greater portion of its length is rectangular, as shown in Fig. 6, and at one end circular and interiorly threaded, as shown at 12, and stopped with a screw, 13. In the aperture 11 a latch, 1 f, is held, consisting of a head, 15, beveled upon one face, as shown in Fig. 5, and a shaft, 16, which shaft is surrounded by a spiral or coil spring, 17, hearing, respectively, upon the screw 13 and on the face of the latchhead, as best shown in Fig. 2.
Thehub of the fly-wheel 18, which is mounted upon the shaft 10, is provided upon the inner face with a horizontal groove, 19, extending through from side to side, and an opening, 20, inthe outersurfaee at theouterend, which opening 20 intersects with the groove 19. Within the groove 19 and opening 20 a locking-bolt, 21, is held to slide, which locking-bolt is preferably angular, the horizontal member sliding in the groove 19 and the vertical member in the opening 20. As will be seen by reference to Fig. 4, the loeking-bo1t is provided at the extremity of its horizontal member with an inclined or beveled surface, 22, adapted to engage the inclined surface of the latehhead, the two inclinations being made, preferably, at an angle of forty-five degrees.
The fly-wheel is secured upon the drive-shaft through the medium of a bindingplate, 23, which plate engages the outer end of the shaft and the outer-surface of the fly-wheel hub, being secured to the former by means of a setsercw, 24!, and smaller screws, 25, 'if so desired.
In the operation of our invention, when the fly-wheel is turned from right to left it will also communicate motion to the drive-shaft 10, as the side wall of the groove 19, coming in contact with the perpendicular face of thelatchhead, binds against the same, and through the medium of the said latch the shaft is rotated in unison with the wheel. the fly-wheel is turned from left to right as the wheel revolves, the opposite wall of the groove 19, coming in contact with the beveled surface of the latch-head, presses the said latch against the action of the spring downward in the aperture 1.1, and the fly-wheel is allowed to revolve free of the shaft, and then the attachment for winding thread on a bobbin or spool may be applied without having to take off the sewing or band or look after threads, 8rd, as in other sewing-machines.
When it is desired to revolve the fly-wheel and not manipulate the several operative parts of the machine, the locking-bolt 21 is pressed inward, and the beveled extremity of the horizontal memb er,being brought in eo ntact with If, on the contrary,

eezrisa passing over the aperture to the inner extremity of the groove 19, retains the latch within its aperture and permits the fly-wheel, as revolved, to turn freely upon the shaft without in the least affecting the same.
It will be observed that the various parts of this invention are simple in construction and not liable to get out of order, and may be readily manipulated by the most inexperienced person.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the driving-shaft of a SGWlDg'DHIChlDG provided with a diametrical aperture closed at one end, and a springactuated latch having a beveled head held in said aperture, of a flywheel held to revolve upon said shaft, provided with a horizontal groove in the inner face ofits hub, and an intersecting vertical opening at the front of said hub, and a locking-bolt sliding in said groove and opening, provided with a beveled extremity adapted to engage the beveled surface of the latch, substantially as shown and'described.
2. The combination, with the driving-shaft of a sewing-machine, provided with a diametrical aperture closed at one end, and aspringactuated latch having a beveled head held in said aperture, of a fly-wheel revolving upon said shaft, provided with a horizontal groove in the inner face of its hub, and a vertical opening intersecting said groove, an angular locking-bolt sliding in said groove and opening, having a beveled extremity to engage the head of the latch, a binding-plate engaging the shaft and wheel-hub, and a set-screw securing the said plate to the shaft, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose herein set forth.
