SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,720, dated November 13, 1888.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM D. ORONIN and WILLIAM RMooRn, citizens of the United States, the former a resident of Philadelphia,
State of Pennsylvania, and the latter a resident of Champion, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Raising and Lowering \Vindow-Sashes, of which to the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in operating devices for raising and lowering window sashes; and the object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction of [5 this class of devices, whereby the ordinary pulley cords and weights are dispensed with.
To this end the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of'parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described,
and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is had and which fully illustrate our invention, Figure 1 is a front View in elevation of the window frame and sash, show- 2 ing that part adjacent to our improved sash lifter and holder in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a front view of the roller-supportand adj ust-able wire bearing.

A designates the window-casing, and B the window-sash which slides Vertically within said casing.
C is a shell or casing, which is sunk in a recess in the window casing, and secured thereto by means of screws or in any suitable manner, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings. Inclosed within this casing or shell 0 is a horizontal drum, 0'. Through this drum is passed a horizontal shaft, D, having its ends journaled in the ends of the shell, and
serves to support the drum and its appurtenances in position. The shaft D has secured upon its ends a ratchetwhecl, (Z, operated upon by a pawl, d, pivoted to the end of the shell or casing, by means of which the tension of a coiled spring, which will be hereinafter referred to, is regulated.
E is a coiled spring, having one end permanently secured to the shaft D, the other end of which, being free, rests upon an adja cent coil of the spring. (More clearly shown in the enlarged portion of the device in Fig. 2 of the drawings.)
F is an operating sash-wire, having one end secured to the periphery of the drum 0, and the other end secured to the under side of the lower sash-rail at one corner thereof. This wire passes over a vertically-adjustable roller or pulley, G, and down between the window casing and sash, where the lower end of it is secured, as above stated. The journals of this roller or pulley G are securely but loosely seated in notches g formed equidistant apart in the sides of a vertical rectangular slot formed in the side strips of the window-sash, near the upper rail of the sash. This roller has its movement vertically in said slot, and can be adjusted in the notches at any desired point. As the wire is wound up or payed out, a bend is formed, as at C, which serves as a brake to sustain the sash at any point and affords the necessary amount of friction to assist in sustaining the sash, this being regulated by raising or lowering the roller in the slot. A great advantage is derived by this form of brake, as all rattling and noises are obviated in the movement of the sash, and a steady and noiseless movement is ob- 8o tained in the operation of raising and lowen ing the sash.
The operation of our device will be obvious when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and further description herein is deemed unnecessary.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described device, consisting, cs 0 sentially, of the frame A, sash B, casing O, drum 0, coil spring E, shaft I), ratchetwheel at, pawl (1, adjustable roller G, and wireF,bend or brake C the roller G, adapted to be adjustable in the rectangular slot in the side strips of the sash, all substantially as described and herein shown, for the purpose set forth.
