DEVICE FOR PREVENTING THE ESCAPE OF GAS FROM WASTE-PIPES OF SlNKS.

.To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Irvington, in the county ofEsseX and State ofNew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Devices for Preventing the Escape of Gas from Vaste -Pipes of Sinks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to more effectually prevent the escape of gas from a trap or waste-pipe leading from a sink, to provide a device of greater convenicnce-one that is less expensive and that can be readily adjusted to cover or uncover the said trap or wastepipe-and it consists in the arrangements and combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each ofthe several figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved covering device, showing the same in its relation with the sink, the latter being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan of a portion of the same, and Fig. 8l is a central vertical section taken on line X.
In said drawings, a indicates an ordinary sink and b an ordinary perforated screen, through which the water passes as it flows from the said sink to the waste-pipe.
d is an ordinary cleat or cleats, or suitable bearing or a marginal piece of wood secured at the upper edgeof the sink, to which my improvements are or may be attached.
e indicates an arm, made preferably of cast metal, and adapted to lie against the side wall of the sink or a little way therefrom, and eX- tend from the said cleat lying above said sink downward to a point near the bottom thereof, the lower end or extremity of said arm having an edge or point, c', substantially as shown in Fig. 3, adapted to enter into the ordinary j oint or seam, e2, formed around the screen b, bctween it and the bottom of the sink. The npper portion of the arm is bolted or secured to the said cleats or bearings d above the said sink, and preferably, as shown in Fig. l, to a block, d, which is provided in addition to the ordinary cleat to secure a more reliable and durable connection. The said arm is thus secured at the bottom and top ends thereof, and is thus held firmly in position. The said arm is longitudinally recessed or open, as at e3, as
shown in Fig. l, to allow play to a spring, b', and at the lower extremity is provided with pivotal ears or bearings j', to receive a cover, g. The cover is secured in the sink to the lower end of the arm, and is hinged to said arm,so as to be very readily and more convenientl y raised from or lowered into its covering relation to the screen. By having the cover hinged upon the arm and the arm removably secured to the cleat by ordinary screws the said cover may be more readily applied to the sink by means commonly found in a home than where the cover is fastened to the ironwork of the sink, as in certain devices heretofore provided. At the upper part of the arm, or about midway thereof, the same is provided with a bearing, h, for the spring b', which latter extends outward from said recess and is adapted to engage a cam projection or eccentric, g', formed on said cover, which latter extends backward and engages the said spring, as shown in Fig. 3.
The cover is preferably a disk, formed of metal and about the size of the perforated screen, and is recessed on the under side thereof to receive a cushion, g, formed from suitable material, such as felt or rubber. The cushion may be dispensed with and the eo rectly upon the screen. The cushion, however, is preferred, as it more perfectly engages the screen, entering to some degree into the perforations and thus forming a more perfect guard or preventive against the escape of gas or malodorous exhalations from the waste-pipe. At the rear of said disk, or at one side thereof, is formed a flange, lug, or pivotal bearing, 7J, forming a part of the eccentric-bearing and adapted to receive the pivot or provide a bearing for a pivot or screw, and thus formv a hinge with the bearings f, whereby the said disk may be raised or lowered from engagement with the screen. rIhe spring b', engag- TOO ing said cam, is adapted, when the cover is turned to its vertical uncovering position, to hold said disk in said position, so that the liquids within the sink are free to pass outward through said screen into the waste pipe. When said covering is in engagement with said screen, the spring `tends to force the said cushion into more intimate engagement therewith, so that a more impervious joint or contact is secured. The said disk is recessed on the under side, an annular flange, g3, being formed thereunder, which serves to overlap, more or less, the edges of the cushion g2 and to hold the latter in its proper relative position. rlhe said cushion may be also held by a rivet or screw, g4. At the outer side of the said disk,
opposite the pivotal bearings thereof, is a finger projection, j, by means of which the disk may be raised or lowered from engagement with the screen with greater ease and con venience. The said cam projection g may be provided wit-h guardingears h, which are disposed so as to engage the opposite edges of the spring b', and inasmuch as the spring is at its upper extremity secured to the arm c by means of a single screw the said guardingears h may serve to prevent the said spring from being moved laterally on its bearings into an improper relation to the said eccentric or cam.
The under or inner side of the bearing h is preferably hollowed out or recessed to provide a space for the nut or head of the bolt or screw for holding the spring, so that the said head will not interfere with the proper engagement of said arm with the wall of the sink.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is- 1. ln combination with a sink having a screen, b, an arm secured at the side of said sink and extending downward toward said screen, said arm having pivotal bearings and a spring,a cover secured upon said pivotal bearings and having a cam projection adapted to engage said spring, all said parts being arranged and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with a sink having a screen at the bottom thereof and a cleat at the upper edge, of an arm having an edge or point adapted to enter the seam or joint adjacent to said screen and adapted to be secured to said cleat, a spring, and an adjustable cover having a cushion, said parts being arranged and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination, an arm recessed at the rear thereof and centrally recessed to provide working room for a spring,and having an edge or point adapted to enter the seam or joint around the screen, and having bearings for a spring and pivotal bearings, a spring and a cover, the latter having pivotal bearings to co-operate with those on the arm, and having a cam projection adapted to engage the spring, and having a recessed under side to receive a cushion, and having a finger-piece projecting from said cover, and a cushion held Within said recess beneath said cover, all said parts being arranged and adapted to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
