EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,622, dated November 13 1888.

Application filed June 26, 1888. Serial No. 278,225.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD O. MOGRATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Iniprovement in Road-Carts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in road-carts, having for its object to provide a simple, cheap, strong, and effective spring for the seat, which will give the latter great resiliency to avoid jarring the occupant of the vehicle.

The invention consists in a certain novel con struction and arrangement of devices, fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accoinpanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a road-cart embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the swinging arms. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of one end of the cross-bar to illustrate the manner of connecting the shackle thereto, and also show the v manner of connecting the front ends of the straps of the foot-rest and the spring side bars to the shackle.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the axle; B B, the thills connected to the axle; O, the crossbar arranged at its ends under the thills and affixed thereto by the clips 0 c,- and D,the whiftletree mounted on the crossbar. Shackles E are aiiixed to the under side of the cross-bar by means of the clips 0 c, and they are provided with the depending ears 6 6, between which are arranged the transverse pivots or bolts e e. On these pivots or bolts are mounted the front ends of the elastic side bars, F F, which consist of semielliptical springs, and the seat G is affixed to the rear ends of the said side bars. Swinging arms H H are mounted on the thills, and their lower ends pass through laterally-projecting ears I I on the side bars, at about their central points, and are engaged by nuts, thus enabling the rear ends of the side bars to be raised or lowered at will to raise or lower the seat. upper ends of the said swinging arms are provided with the laterally-extending spindles h h, which are mounted in bearings K K on the upper sides of the thills.

their front ends on the pivots or bolts 6 e and loosely affixed at their rear ends to the under side of the seat or the side bars close to the seat, as shown in the drawings.

It will be observed that the parts of the device are connected by simple means, thereby enabling them to be easily adjusted, and the seat is capable of a gentle resilient motion, which prevents j arring when the vehicle passes over rough ground.

Having thus described the invention, I claim- 1. In a road-cart, the combination, with the thills of the ordinary construction, connected by a suitable crossbar, of the springs F, connected at their front ends to the cross-bar, and having the seat affixed to their rear ends, the foot-rest arranged under the said springs, the swinging arms H, provided at their upper ends with lateral spindles mounted in hearings on the thills and projecting at their lower ends through apertured ears in the springs, and the nuts engaging the threaded lower ends of the said arms below the springs, substantially as specified.

2. In a road-cart, the thills, and the crossbar arranged at its end under the thills, in combination with the clips embracing the thills and passing through the cross-bar, the shackles arranged on the under side of the cross-bar and secured in place by the said clips, the transverse bolts or pivots arranged in the shackles, theelastic side bars mounted at their front ends on the said bolts or pivots and provided with the ears I I, the swinging arms mounted at their upper ends on the thills and passing at their lower ends through the said ears I, whereby the side bars may be raised or lowered at their rear ends, the seat affixed to the rear ends of the side bars, and the foot rest provided with the straps M M, mounted at their front ends on the said bolts or pivots 9 5 EDWVARD O.
