Abstract

A hair clipper having a conically shaped hollow open ended head which is serrated at the outer edge thereof. A blade is fitted within the head and is rotated by means of a power source forming a part of the clipper. A hair deflector is carried within the head and in conjunction therewith serves to deflect the random growing hair in the nose or ears into the path of the cutter blades during use of the clipper.

HAIR CLIPPER FOR THE NOSE AND EARS SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION. A
This invention relates to an improved hair clipper and will have specific, but not limited, application to the removal of hair within the nasal and ear passages.
In this invention the hair clipper includes a conically shaped hollow open ended head which is defined by a side wall having serrations formed in the outer edge thereof to provide slots for receiving hairs therein. A cutter blade is located within the head and includes spaced blade parts or cutters which overlie the inner surface of the head side wall at the serrations formed in the open end thereof. Means are provided for rotating the cutter blade within the head to cut the hairs protruding into the head open end. The improvement of this invention includes a hair deflecting means which is positioned within the head between the spaced cutter blade parts. This hair deflecting means serves to urge a portion of the hairs protruding through the head open end into the path of the cutter blade parts. Additionally, the cutter blade and hair deflecting means may be of a unitized construction and formed so as to be removable as a unit from the clipper.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The preferred embodiments illustrated are not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise forms disclosed. They are chosen and described in order to best explain the principles of the invention and its application and practical use to thereby enable others skilled in the art to best utilize the invention.
The clipper illustrated pictorially in FIG. 1 includes a base 10 and a head 12. Base 10 is divided into parts 14 and 16. Base part 14 includes a battery 18 or other suit- 2. able power producing source. Base part 16 includes an electric motor 20- having a drive shaft 22 which protrudes into head12. Battery18 in base part 14 includes contact prongs 24 which are fitted in removably-interlocking fashion-into a recessed electrical outlet in base part 16 andintoengagement with contacts 26 connected to motor 20. It is to be understood that the means of energizing motor 20 can vary from construction toconstruction of the clipper and may be by way of an electrical cord with or without battery association.
Head 12 is cylindrically shaped and defined by a side v wall 28. One end of head 12 is serrated by means of a plurality of circumferentially spaced slots 30. The outer surface of head side wall 28 is tapered at the serrated open end of the head so as to accommodatethe insertion of the head into the nasal and ear passages. The inner surface of head side wall 28includes a cylindrical straight wall portion 31 which extends to slots 30 at the open end of the head and a threaded portion 32 which extends to the opposite end of the head. Base 16'of base 10 is provided with a threaded neck 34 onto which head 12 is threaded at portion 32 of side wall 28. v V
The cutter part of the clipper shown in FIGS.'13 includes a hair deflector 36 having a conically shaped head 38 and a depending shank 40. A cutter blade 41 having spaced cutters 42 which are interconnected bya blade collar 44 is secured to hair deflector 36. Collar 44 of the blade is fitted about shank 40 of the hair deflector with the blade being secured to the shank'by means of a retainer ring 46 which constrictively surrounds collar 44. Deflector head 38 of hair deflector 36' is located between cutters 42 adjacent serrations 29 and slots 30 therebetween in clipper head 12. Shank 40 of hair deflector 36 has a bore 48 formed therein. Shaft 22 of motor 20 fits removably into bore 48 in a snug fit to secure the cutter part to the shaft. To prevent relative rotative movement between hair deflector 36 and motor shaft 22, bore 48 in the hair deflector is formed with a slotted end wall into which the flange tip 23 of shaft 22 is fitted. Cutters 42 are formed of a spring steel material and, with the cutter part connected to motor shaft 22, are flexed and press against the inner cylindrical straight wall portion of head side wall 28. The tip of cutters 42 extend upwardly and overlap at least a portion of slots 30 in the open end of the head. A button switch 50 is carried externally of base part 16 and is for the purpose of activating motor 20 to cause the rotation of the cutter part within head 12.
When it is desired to utilize the clipper, button 50 is pushed with head 12 at its tapered open end being inserted into a nasal or ear passage. A portion of the hairs within the nasal or car passage fits into slots 30 in head side wall 28 and are severed by the cutting edges of cutters 42. Some of the hair within the nasal or ear passage may not enter slots 30 directly but instead will contact the conical head 38 of hair deflector 36 and be urged thereby laterally into contact with the cutting blade which severs the deflected hair.
In FIG. 4 a modified embodiment of the cutter part is shown. Hair deflector 52 includes a conically shaped head 54 and a shank 56. Shank 56, as best shown in FIGS. 4 and 8, has a bore 58 formed therein and is slotted at 60 to permit the shank to be inserted snugly over the end of motor shaft 22', causing the slot-separated portions of the shank to be slightlyflexed. There is sufficient frictional fit between the shank 56 of hair deflector 52 and motor shaft 22' so that no relative rotative movement between the deflectorand shaft takes place during rotation of the shaft upon activation of the clipper motor. The cutter blade 61 of this embodiment of the clipper includes spaced cutters 62 which are interconnected by a collar 64, as best illustrated in FIG. 9. A plurality of in-bent tabs 66 areformed in collar 64 of the cutter part. Tabs 66 are arranged so as to fit into shouldered flats 68 which are formed in the lower edge of shank '56 of the hair deflector as collar'64 is snugly fitted over the hair deflector shank. In the illustrated embodiment there are three tabs 66 formed in collar 64 and there are three flats 68 formed in shank 56 of the hair deflector. The engagement of each tab 66 with a flat 68 in the hair deflector shank interlocks the cutter blade to the hair deflector and prevents rotative movement of the cutter blade relative to the hair deflector. Cutters 62 of the cutter part are formed of spring steel and are flexed outwardly against the cylindrical straight wall portion of head side wall 28, overlapping a portion of slots 30 in the head. Head 54 of hair deflector 52 while spaced inwardly of the outer edge 53 of the open end of the clipper head does project above .the bottom of slots 30 therein so as to contact and direct a portion of the hairs within the ear and nasal passages outwardly into the path of cutters 62 for severing.
In both of the aforementioned embodiments cutters 42 and 62 of the cutter part have the cutting edge thereof beveled so as to facilitate the cutting action. Any hair accumulating within the clipper head can be removed by simply unscrewing the head 12 from base 10. Further cleaning of the clipper can be accomplished by pulling hair deflector 36 or 52 from shaft 22 or 22 with head 12 removed from base 10. Head 12 is preferably formed of a steel composition, while hair deflector 36 and 52 may be formed of a plastic material. An alternative means of securing the hair deflector to the motor shaft of the clipper would be by providing the end of the motor shaft with splines.
It is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the details above given but may be modified within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a hair clipper including a conically shaped hollow open ended head defined by a side wall, the side wall at said head open end being serrated, a shaft extending into said head and terminating inwardly of the open end thereof, power means for rotating said shaft relative to said head, cutter blade means located within said head and having spaced cutters overlying the inner surface of said side wall at said head open end, means securing said blade means to said shaft for rotation with the shaft, the improvement comprising means located within said head between said spaced blade parts for deflecting hair protruding into said head open end toward said blade parts and between said serrations whereby said hairs will be caused to be severed by said blade parts, said deflecting means including a conically shaped portion having sides converging toward said head open end and being located oppositely of a blade part in alignment with such blade part and said head open end.
2. The hair cutter of claim 1 and means removably securing said deflecting means to said shaft.
3. The hair clipper of claim 2 wherein said blade meansincludes a collar to which said blade parts are integrally connected, said collar including tab means, said deflecting means including a shank, said collar fitted about said shank with said tab means contacting said shank to secure said blade means to said deflecting means.
4. The hair clipper of claim 1 and means removably securing said blade means to said deflecting means.
5. The hair clipper of claim 1 wherein each blade part includes a tip located wholly within said head, said deflecting means convergent sides terminating in a common apex located adjacently below the level of said blade part tips within said head.

Claims (5)

1. In a hair clipper including a conically shaped hollow open ended head defined by a side wall, the side wall at said head open end being serrated, a shaft extending into said head and terminating inwardly of the open end thereof, power means for rotating said shaft relative to said head, cutter blade means located within said head and having spaced cutters overlying the inner surface of said side wall at said head open end, means securing said blade means to said shaft for rotation with the shaft, the improvement comprising means located within said head between said spaced blade parts for deflecting hair protruding into said head open end toward said blade parts and between said serrations whereby said hairs will be caused to be severed by said blade parts, said deflecting means including a conically shaped portion having sides converging toward said head open end and being located oppositely of a blade part in alignment with such blade part and said head open end.
2. The hair cutter of claim 1 and means removably securing said deflecting means to said shaft.
3. The hair clipper of claim 2 wherein said blade means includes a collar to which said blade parts are integrally connected, said collar including tab means, said deflecting means including a shank, said collar fitted about said shank with said tab means contacting said shank to secure said blade means to said deflecting means.
4. The hair clipper of claim 1 and means removably securing said blade means to said deflecting means.
5. The hair clipper of claim 1 wherein each blade part includes a tip located wholly within said head, said deflecting means convergent sides terminating in a common apex located adjacently below the level of said blade part tips within said head.
