SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,499, dated November 6, 1888.
Application filed March 23, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE ll. COLDWELL, a citizen of the United States of America, rcsiding at Rockton, in the county of Olearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates for Splash-Dams, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in gates or draws for splash'dams, having reference more particularly for uscin connection with a dam on which logs are floated. 1
The invention has for its object the production of simple and highly-efficient means for opening the gate or draw at the desired time as regulated by the amount of water contained within the upper portion of the dam or creek, the opening of said gate or draw being regulated by the movement of a float.
The invention comprises the detail construc tion, combination, and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof. Fig. 3 isaplan View. Fig. 4 is a side view, and Fig. 5 is a detail view.
Referring to the drawings, A A designate two uprights or slightly-inclined bars connect ed at their lower ends to a transverse bar, a, to which are secured two outwardly-projecting bars, a a, and a third outwardly-projecting bar, at. G is a lever fulcrumed at one end to an apertured arm, 9, of the frame a, and to this 1ever is connected a small trigger or trip,g,and upon the rear portion of this are adjustably secured the upwardly projecting arms 9 g of a float, H. The arms 9 g have a series of holes or apertures therein,wherein transverse pins 7L h are designed to lit, and said pins hug the upper and lower edges of the lever G.
In practice the gate or draw 13 is lowered while the upper portion of the dam or creek is being filled or supplied with water, and the gate or door E is closed against the grooved sides of the opening I). \Vhen sufficient wa ter has been gathered or collected in said upper portion of the dam or creek, the same through the agency of the float H raises the lever G, causing the disengagement of the trigger or trip 9 from the arm I of the V-shape locking-plate F, which will permit the same to move by reason of the weight connected to the other arm thereof, causing, through the agency of the vertical rod or spindle e, the partial revolution of the gate E, which will now occupy a position at right angles to that previously described. This opening of the gate E permits theinflow of water through the opening b,wliich will strike against the waterwheel, causing the revolution thereof in the direction of the arrow 10, which will effect the revolution of the shaft D and the winding thereon of the ropes or chains, causing the elevation of the gate or draw B, thus permitting the water and logs to float between the uprights or bars A.
The gate or draw B in its elevation will effect the rising of the lever f, which will pull on the rope or chain f drawing the locking plate F to its former position as against the action of its weight, thereby when water is lowered the desired extent in the upper por tion of the draw or creek causing the lowering of the float H. The lever G, together with its trigger or trip y, will be lowered, causing said trigger or trip to come in contact with the outer end of the arm F of said locking-plate,
and such turning of the locking-plate to its former position will effect the closing of the gate E, thereby cutting off the supply of water, and consequently causing the revolution of the water wheel to cease. When it is desired to again lower the gate or draw B, the same is effected by the operator revolving the water-wheel in the direction opposite to that previously described.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the amount of water to be gathered in the upper portion of the dam or creek before the gate or draw is opened can be regulated by means of the pins in the arms of the float H, the movement of such float causing the raising of the lever G, and permitting the opening of the gate E and allowing the inflow of water onto the water-wheel.
I claim as my invention 1.. As an improvement in gates or draws for splash-dan1s, the V-shape locking-plate, the vertical rod or spindle, the revolving gate, and the lever having the trigger or trip, substantially as shown and described.
2. As an improvement in gates or draws of the class herein described, the \I-shape locking-plate having a weight connected to one end thereof, the revolving gate secured on the spindle or rod of said locking-plate, the lever having a rope or chain connecting the same to said locking-plate, the lever having the trigger or trip and the sliding gate or draw, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the uprights or bars and the transverse rod having the grooved pulleys, of the sliding gate or draw, the ropes or chains passed over pulleys thereof, the shafts, the pinions or gear-wheels, the waterwheel, and the revolving gate, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with the sliding gate or draw and the water-wheel operating the same, of the revolving gate, the V-shape lockingplate, the lever having the trigger or trip, and the float connected to said lever, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination, with the sliding gate or draw and the water-wheel operating the same, of the revolving gate, the locking-plate, the lever having the trigger or trip, the weight connected to said locking-plate, and the lever operated upon by said gate or draw and connected to said locking-plate, substantially as shown and described.
6. The combination, with the revolving gate and the V-shape locking-plate, of the lever having the trigger or trip, and the float having the arms provided with a series of apertures, and the transverse rodor pin, substan* tially as shown and described.
