T. W. MORAN.
BARREL FILLER; N0.- 392,448.
UNITED STATES `PATENT EEICE.
THOMAS XV. MORAN, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
BARREL-FILLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392.448, dated November 6, 1888.
Application tiled J ulyr 528, 1888. Serial No. 281.322.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, THOMAS W. MoRAN, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Fillers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked there on, which form a part'of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my improved barrel-filler. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of same. Fig. 3 is avertical section. Fig. 4 is a detail view of plug.
The invention relates to improvements in barrel-fillers; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
The present invention consistsmore particularly in improvements in the iiller for which LettersPatent were granted to me under date of April 2, 1878, and numbered. 201,887.
In the device patented as above, objection is found in the fact that when the barrel is full and the cut-off valve automatically closeda quantity of oil or other lliquid is retained in the pipe between the valve and the liquid in the barrel, and. when the filler is removed from the bung of the barrel the air, rushing into the illler, causes the said oil or other liquid to discharge u'pon the door or upon the outside of the barrel. To obviate this diiiiculty in the present case I provide an air-inlet that admits air in the rear of the oil at the proper time and causes the oil to discharge into the barrel, as will hereinafter more fully appear. I have further improved the filler by rendering the main trigger adjustable, so that the releasing thereof may be regulated to the pressure of the liquid upon the float.
The improvement further consists in dispensing With the T-coupling and extending the valve-casing in lieu thereof, and also by discarding one of the stuffing-boxes, thus materially reducing the cost of the filler.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the valve-casing, closed at one end,
(No model.)
preferably by the handle a, and engaging at its opposite internallythreaded end with the main tube B.
O represents the valve-plug, having a transverse opening, c, within the casing, and provided at one end With the angular stem b, projecting outwardly, and thejournal or lug b at its opposite end. The valve or plug seat D is threaded at one end and provided with the bearing-head E, Which engages astufngboX,F. The plug C has a small longitudinal open Way, G, which communicates at one end with the interior of the casing, as shown at c, and the opening c at its other end registers at a certain time with the opening d through the wall of the valve-seat.
G is a double-arm lever having one of its arms at the end provided with an angular opening to engage the angular plug-stem b, and its opposite arm is provided With around opening to engage the journal b'. A bail, H, has its outwardly-turned endsinserted in openings in the arms of the lever G, as shown, and a spiral spring, j', extends from the bail to a connection with the collar f', which is adjustable on the tube B, a set-screw, g, being provided to secure the collar in any desired position to regulate the spring-tension.
I is a tubelepending from the threaded opening h in the valve-casing, designed to be inserted through the bung-hole of the barrel, and through which the liquid passes into the barrel. A tube, J, extends upwardly from the conical bottom Within the tube I, and a smaller tube, z', has an outward opening from the top of the tube J through the upper wall of the valve-casing. A suitable iioat, k, is loosely placed Within the tube J, and a wire, j, extending therefrom through the tube fi, engages the long arm of the trigger L, which has its head pivoted within the lugs 7:.
M is a trigger i'or engaging the double-arm i lever, pivoted near its end within the lugsl and. sufficiently long to engage the hook of the trigger L. The lugs Z are secured to the handle a by the bolt Z', which passes through a longitudinal slot, m, in said handle, and the nuta. The object of the slot-opening is to provide for the horizontal adjustment of the trigger L, which is desirable should the hooks of the triggers become worn and require filing.
ICO
A spider-leg collar, o, on the tube I is adapted to move up and down thereon, and the legs, resting on the outer surface of the barrel, allow the escape of air from the barrel.
I? is a universatcoupiing joint adapted to connect the filler with the large oil-tank; but as this coupling has heretofore been patented by ine I do not claim it, broadly, herein.
In operation the filler is connected with the tank by means of the coupling-joint and the tube I is inserted through the bung-hole of the barrel. The double-arm lever is then tb row n forward to an engagement with the trigger M, which at the saine time engages the trigger L. The filler is now in operation to il the barrel. \V11en the liquid reaches to the top, or nearly so, of the barrel, it forces the float upwardly, releasing the double-arm lever, which is reversed or drawn in the opposite direction by the coiled spring, thus closing the valve and placing the opening G in communication with the outward opening, d,allowingthe entrance of air, which forces all of the liquid ont of the valve-easing into the barrel.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In a barrel-filler, the combination of the valvecasing having the opening cl, the handle provided with the slot, the plug having the inwardly and outwardly opening Way G, the J THOS. W. MORAN.
