ROAD- CART.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,414, dated November 6, 1888.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be known that I, TIMOTHY DOLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wellington, Lorain county,and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Carts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and true description thereof.

The nature of my invention relates to ccrtain constructions and adjustments of the seat and foot-rest of a road-cart to render it easy and convenient for getting in and out thereof and to adjust the seat to various loaded conditions under which it is to be used.

That the improvements may be fully seen and understood, reference will be had to the following specification and the annexed drawings, making part thereof.

Figure 1 is a side view of a road-cart having one of the wheels removed. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on line :0 w, as seen from the rear side of the cart.

Like letters of reference denote like parts in the drawings and specification.

The cart, as illustrated in Fig. 1. has one of its wheels removed to permit of a full view of the several parts forming the essential features of thisin'vention.

A indicates the axle, and B one of the wheels. To the axle are secured the shafts G O by means of the clamps D. and the braces E, Fig. 1. The cross-barF braces the shafts laterally and serves as a support for the spring G, as seen in Fig. 2, which spring is for the purpose of cushioning the seat-bars H H and seat mounted upon the bars to which the seat is fastened. The opposite ends of these bars are attached to the shafts O O by a hinged connection, J, which admits of an easy movement of the seat in its relation with the spring G. In both ends of this spring is an eyebolt, K, as seen in the drawings. One end of the loop L is attached to said eyebolt. Thisarrangenient of the loop, eyebolt, and connection with the spring G is the same on both sides of the cart. ,The loops L L embrace both of the seat-bars H H, to which the notched plates M M are fastened on the under side, as shown in the drawings.

positions in which the loops may be set. For light use the loops will be set in the platenotch indicated by the lines a, and for heavy use or load into the plate-notch corresponding with the line a. Thus the strain or weight on the spring G is regulated in so far as a light person or load is concerned. In such instance more leverage on the spring may be had than a heavy person or load. This change of leverage on the spring is attained by adjusting the loops L L to the proper platenotch, as before indicated by the lines a a, Fig. l.

The foot-rest consists of the hangers NT? and the cross-bars O, the hangers being attached to the under side Of the seat-bars H H at one end, while the other ends are connected by a jointed attachment to the bolt K. By this means the foot-rest movements conform with that of the seat when used and render riding The seat is readily adj usted in the required position by lifting it at the rear end,by which the loops maybe swung or adjusted into notches of the plate M, according to the load of the cart. As the seatbars extend under the cross-bar F, (shown in the drawings.) this arrangement facilitates getting in and out of the cart.

What I c1aim,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I 1. In combination with a road-cart,the seatbars H H,having jointed connections J J with the shafts, loops L L, engaging the notched plates attached to the seat-bars, and a jointed connection with the spring G, attached to the cross-bar F of the foot-rest, supported by its hangers N N, being fastened to the seat-bars and ajointed attachment to the spring G, re spectively arranged as and for the purpose substantially as set forth. In combination with a road cart-.the footrest hangers N N, attached at one end to the seat-bars H H and the opposite ends thereof jointedly connected to the seat-bar spring G. arranged to cooperate conjointly with the seat and seat-bars,having a hinged connection with the shafts. substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
