SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,183, dated November 6. 1838- (No model.)
v.To all whom, it may concern:
use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The objects of my invention are to turn up the nuts of the tire-bolts, trim the bolts off, and to press the felly-platessu ugly against the rim of the wheel.
It consists, essentially, of a rot-ary wrench, a bolt-cutter, a pair of jaws, a wheelsupport, and mechanism for operating said wrench and bolt`cutter.
In the accompanying drawings like letters designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of-my machine with a wheel in position to be operated upon by the wrench. Fig. 2 is a sideelevation of the machine. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, on au enlarged scale, of the Wrench and bolt-cutter and their actuating mechanism. Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on the line-x m, Fig. 8; and Figs. 5 and 6 are details of the wheel-supporting device.
Heretofore the several functions of my machine have been performed by hand,requiring, where a considerable number of wheels are to be i'roned, much more time and labor, and involving greater expense than is necessary with my improved machine,with which a single attendant of common ability will do the work of a number of men and do it better than by the ordinary hand methods.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a horizontal shaft supported in suitable bearings upon the legs or standards NN, or any other convenient frame-work. To the ends of said shaft are fixed the gear H and the drivingpulley C. Between said pulley O and gear H upon the shaft A is loosely mounted the perforated block b, in which is hinged the wheelsupporting Spindle B, arranged to-vibrate in a plane parallel with said shaft A. The block b, extended on one side of said shaft A at right angles to the spindle B, tends'to carry the latter when released into a horizontal. position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5-a position in which the wheel can be readily placed thereon and then turned horizontally to be operated upon by the machine. G is a rotary wrench formed with a Journal, which is inserted and bears in the sleeve of bracket F, vand provided at the inner end y thereof with a pinion, Q,which works with the gear H. To the upper end of the bracket F, between ears formed thereon for the purpose, is hinged 'the vibrating bolt-cutter E, formed at its outer end with a cutting-edge, which" works with the adjacent upper face of the 'bracket F in close proximity to the Wrench G. Upon the ways ff is mounted the vertically-working slide D, which is formed ad` jacent to the jaw f on bracket F with a corresponding jaw, d. To the sides of the slide D is attached the loop or yoke d', extending above the bracket F and engaging with the vibrating bolt`cuttcr E, which is operated thereby.
To the end of shaft A protruding from bracket F is attached the eccentric a, which Works in a transverse slot in slide D, thereby causing said slide and the bolt-cutter E to reciprocate vertically when said shaft is rotated.
The operation of my improved machine is as follows: The tire having been set and drilled, the bolts inserted, the felly-plates placed in position, and the nuts started on the bolts, the wheel is placed in a vertical position on spindle B, as shown in Fig. 2. It is then turned in a horizontal position by the operator, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the block b moved longitudinally upon the shaft A, so as to bring the rim of the wheel in the proper position in relation to the wrench G to turn the nuts by said wrench. The several nuts are then successively inserted into wrench G, as shown in Fig. 4, and turned snugly up against the felly or felly-plate, as the case may be, until all of said nuts are in position. I claiml. The combination7 with a suitable supporting-frame, of a rotary power-wrenehjournaled therein, actuating` mechanism connecting said wrench with a suitable source of power, and a wheel-support arranged to sustain a wheel in proper position for said wrench to operate upon the nuts on the inner side of the folly, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combi nation,with a suitable supporting-fra1ne,of a rotarywrenchjournaled therein, a bolt-cutter mounted upon said framein convenient proximity to said wrench, actuating mechanism connecting said wrench and boltcutter with a suitable source of power, and a wheel-support arranged to sustain a wheel in proper position to be operated upon by said wrench and bolt-cutter, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination, with a suitable supporting-frame, ofa rotary wrenchjournaled therein, a bolt-cutter mounted upon said frame, actuating mechanism connecting said wrench and bolt-cutter with a suitable source of power, and a movable wheel-support adapted and arranged to support a wheel in proper position to be operated upon by said wrench and boltcutter, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

'lhc eombination,with a suitable supporting-frame,ofa rotary wrenchjournaled therein, a bolt-cutter mounted on said frame in close proximity to said wrench, actuating mechanism connecting said wrench and bolt-cutter with a suitable source of power, a horizontal shaft having a fixed support, and a wheel-supporting spindle capable of angular and lateral movementuponsaidshaft,andcounterweighted so as to assume a horizontal position when released, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
6. The combination, with asuitable Supporting-frame,of a rotary wrench jou rnaled therein, a bolt-cutter mounted upon said frame, actuating mechanism connecting said wrench and bolt-cutter with a suitable source of power, a horizontal shaft, a slide revoluble and movable endwise upon said shaft, and a wheel-supporting spindle having a limited vibratory movement in said slide in a plane parallel with or cutting said shaft axially, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
7. rlhe combination,with a suitable supporting-frame, of a rotary wrench journaled therein, a bolt-cutter and clamping-jaws mounted upon said frame, actuating mechanism connecting said wrench, bolt-cutter, and one of said clamping-jaws with a suitable source of power, and a wheel-support movable toward and from said wrench, bolt-cutter, and clamping-jaws, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
8. The combinatiomwith a suitable supporting-frame, of a bolt-cutter mounted thereon, actuating mechanism connecting said bolt-cutter with a suitable source of power, and a wheel-supporting spindle movable toward and from said bolt-cuttcr, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
9. rlhe combination, with a suitable supporting-frame, of clampingjaws mounted thereon, one of which is movable toward and from the other, actuating mechanism connecting said movable jaw with a suitable source of power, and a wheel-support movable toward and from said clamping-Jaws, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
