Be it known that I, DARWIN V. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weeds port, in the county ofGayuga and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bustles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention consists in a bustle constructed as hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved bustle, and Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of the same.

The bustle-frame comprises an upper bow, 1, a lower bow, 2, and several intermediate bows, 3, 4, and 5,0f any suitable number. This frame is provided with a covering, 6, of any appropriate character, and to which is attached a waistband, 7, of ordinary construction.

The upper bow, 1, consists of a hat, elastic, metallic or whalebone strip closely covered with textile material, and having riveted to each end, on its outer side, a short textilecovered supplemental strip, 8, of metal or whalebone, arranged in such a manner as to form a bifurcation, 9, at each end ofthe bow. Any required number of rivets, 10, or other suitable connections may be used to secure a tirm union between the strips 8 and the main portion 1 of the upper bow. In theiorward ends of the bifurcations formed by the bow 1 and supplemental strips8 are secured studs or elongated rivets 11, that serve as bearings for the lower and intermediate bows, which are preferably made of metallic wire. The opposite ends of the lower bow, 2, are passed around the studs 11 adjacent to the upper bow, 1, and are bent to form spring-arms 2, having at their ends eyes 2, that engage the adjacent intermediate bow, 3, as shown. This intermediate bow, 3, also engages the studs 11, and has spring-arms 3a, provided with eyes 3b, to engage the next intermediate bow, 4, which in turn has spring-arms 4f* and eyes 4b, whereby bows serve as springs to spread thebows apart p and give the proper shape to the bustle. A connecting strap or cord, 12, maybe attached centrally to each bow for the purpose of limiting the spread of the bustle, and a baclcstrap, 13, is provided, as usual, to regulate the set.

YV hat I claim as my invention is- 1. A bustle comprising in its structure a vertical elastic bow having bifurcated lower ends, a transverse stud or bearing at or near the extremity of each bifurcated end,and other bows having their end portions mounted on the said studs or bearings between the bifurcations, substantially as described.

2. A bustleframe comprising an upper bow having bifurcated ends with studs or bearings secured therein, and a lower bow, and intermediate bows engaged with said studs and provided with arms having eyes engaged with the adjacent bows, substantially as described.

3. A bustle-frame comprising an upper bow, 1, having supplemental strips 8 secured to the ends, studs 11, secured in the bifurcations be tween the forward ends of said bow and strips, and a lower bow, 2, and intermediate bows, 3, 4,and 5,engaged with said studs,said lower bow and intermediate bows being each provided with arms that are engaged with the next bow above in succession,substantially as described.
