Abstract
An electrically operated nail file which is powered either by a dry cell battery or by an extension cord that can be plugged into a household electric outlet socket; the nail file being moved forward and backward by being connected to an armature of an electric solenoid, the armature being attracted to move toward a magnetic field of the solenoid each time an electric circuit is closed between the solenoid and the power source, which circuit instantly breaks so a return springs moves the armature from the solenoid to a starting position for rapidly repeating the cycle, thus giving a file a high speed reciprocal movement.

A principal .object of the present invention is to provide a nail filing implement that is electrically operated so that a person does not have to manually move the file back and forth while in use so that a person does not exert any effort of energy to do the same; thus the nail filing can be more quickly accomplished as there is no need to stop for resting.
Another object is to provide an electric finger nail file which accordingly allows the person to fully concentrate all attention only on the work being done by the file at the nail, so the a more perfect filing results is attained.
Still another object is to provide an electric finger nail file which is small and compact in a manner similar to an electric shaver or electric toothbrush so to be easy to hold in a hand, and which is powered either by an extension cord plugged in a house socket or else by a replaceable battery in the handle of the device.
Other objects are to provide an electric finger nail file which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the present invention shown packaged within an attractive storage case when not in use.
FIG. 2 is a side view of the invention shown set up for use; the handle of the device having a front cover plate removed so to illustrate the interior structure which is shown generally schematically.
FIG. 3 is a fragmentary view similar to FIG. 2,and showing a modified design thereof.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, and more particularly to FIGS. 1 and 2 thereof at this time, the reference numeral represents an electric finger nail file according to the present invention wherein the same comprises a handle 11 for being held in a persons hand, and a separate nail file 12 that is attachable to the handle 11 for use as shown in FIG. 2, and which when not in use is detachable therefrom so to make a more compact set for being contained within a small storage case 13 that may be of any attractive design and color or it may be transparent, as shown in FIG. 1. The set may include, if prefered, several nail files interchangably attachable to the handle, each nail file being of different shape, design, or grade of teeth for specific applications. I
The handle 11 comprises a hollow, hard plastic case 14 made either with a removable cover as stated, or else made of two halves fitted together so to enclose an electromagnetic solenoid 15 for attracting an armature 16 reciprocally slidable in bearings 17 and 18 toward one end of the solenoid electromagneticunit.
The nail file is quickly and easily attachable to the end of the armature by means of a tongue and groove construction 20 so to move together. The other end of the armature has a plate 21 of electrically conductive material secured thereto in an insulated manner by means of insulation 22 therebetween, so to prevent electrically charging the file when the plate 21 is within a closed electrical circuit. The plate 21 is movable between the solenoid end and an electrically conductive stop 23.
A tension coil spring 24 serves as a return spring so to return plate 21 to the stop 22. The handle 11 also has a finger operated button 25 for closing an electric switch 26 of an electric circuit 27 that extends in series through the solenoid l4, pleate 21, stop 22, switch 26 and a dry cell battery 28 or outside power source.
In operative use, when the button 25 is depressed, the switch 26 is closed, thus closing circuit 27, causing solenoid 15 create an electromagnetic force that attracts plate 21' to slide from stop 22 to the solenoid. This movement results in the file travelling downward with the plate. However, as the plate leaves the stop 22, the circuit 27 is broken at the same instant so the solenoid looses its magnetic attraction of the armature plate 21. When this attraction force ceases, the return spring 24 immediately pulls the plate 21 back to the stop 23 thus causing the nail file to travel upward. This cycle repeats rapidly so to cause the file reciprocally to move.
In the present invention, the length of plate 21 travel stroke in controlled by a mechanism 29 that is manually adjustable. The mechanism 29 consists of a collar 30 affixed by pin 31 to the solenoid 15, the collar being integral with a hollow sleeve 32 into the end of which a push button pin 33 is slidable against a compression spring 34 when the pushbutton is depressed by a persons finger. The pin 33 is integral with a tooth 35 so that when the push button is depressed the tooth 35 disengages a stationary toothed rack 36 and thus allows a person to slide the push button 37, as indicated by arrow 38, thus causing the solenoid to move closer or farther from the plate 21. When the push button is released, the spring 34 causes tooth 35 to reengage the rack 36 at the new setting.
Thus a novel, adjustable and useful electric nail file is provided.
In FIG. 3, a modified design 39 of the invention is the same as above described, except that it additionally includes a series of electrically non-conductive, compres sive coil springs 40 between the plate 21 and stop 23; the springs serving to absorb shock and at a same time force the plate 21 toward the solonoid. This form of the invention accordingly may have less vibration when held in the hand and it may possibly be more quiet as well. The springs may be made non-conductive by being made of steel, but being plastic insulation covered.
Thus a modified design has been provided.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it is understood that such changes will be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as is defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. An electric finger nail file comprising an elongated hollow handle having an .open end with an armature mounted axially therein, including a finger nail file detachably secured to said armature in axial alignment therewith and extending externally through said open end, in combination with a solenoid axially mounted in said handle adjacent the inner end of said armature including a source of electrical engergy in said handle for powering the solenoid, in further combination with a stop mounted in said handle and a coacting plate extending transversely from said armature adapted to engage said stop to limit outward movement of the armature, including an electric circuit interconnecting the stop, the plate, the solenoid, the source of electrical energy and a switch mounted externally on the handle whereby closure of said switch powers the solenoid and moves the armature towards the solenoid, causing the plate to move away from the stop and breaking the circuit, in further combination with resilient means biasing the armature and plate towards the stop for engagement therewith, in still further combination with manually operated external means for moving the solenoid axially to adjust the stroke of the armature.

A device as in claim 1 wherein the last paid means comprises a collar secured to said solenoid having a movable member extending transversely outwardly of 4 the handle, said member and said handle having coacting interlocking members biased normally to a position securing the collar to the handle and manually movable to another position wherein the collar may be moved axially.
3. A device as in claim 1 including spring means urging the place towards the solenoid, said spring means being weaker than the resilient means urging the plate towards the solenoid, said spring means being weaker than the resilient means urging the plate towards the stop. 5 1
Claims (3)
1. An electric finger nail file comprising an elongated hollow handle having an open end with an armature mounted axially therein, including a finger nail file detachably secured to said armature in axial alignment therewith and extending externally through said open end, in combination with a solenoid axially mounted in said handle adjacent the inner end of said armature including a source of electrical engergy in said handle for powering the solenoid, in further combination with a stop mounted in said handle and a coacting plate extending transversely from said armature adapted to engage said stop to limit outward movement of the armature, including an electric circuit interconnecting the stop, the plate, the solenoid, the source of electrical energy and a switch mounted externally on the handle whereby closure of said switch powers the solenoid and moves the armature towards the solenoid, causing the plate to move away from the stop and breaking the circuit, in further combination with resilient means biasing the armature and plate towards the stop for engagement therewith, in still further combination with manually operated external means for moving the solenoid axially to adjust the stroke of the armature.
2. A device as in claim 1 wherein the last paid means comprises a collar secured to said solenoid having a movable member extending transversely outwardly of the handle, said member and said handle having coacting interlocking members biased normally to a position securing the collar to the handle and manually movable to another position wherein the collar may be moved axially.
