PATENT FRANK BURLINGHAM, OF MOGRAW'VILLE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO CLAYTON T. PHILLIPS, OF SAME PLACE.
SLEIGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,578, dated October 23, 1888.
Application filed July 5, 1888. Serial No. 279,031.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK BURLINGHAM, of MeGrawville, in the county of Cortland, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sleighs, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a novel construction of a sleigh having its body supported on a bob under the front portion and on runners rigidly attached to the body and extending under the rear portion thereof, as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figure is a side view of a sleigh embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear end view, and Fig. 4 is a ver tieal transverse section taken in front of the king-b0lt.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the body, which may be of any suitable or desired style or construction.
B denotes a bob-sleigh, which is under the front portion of the body and supports the same. It is connected to the body by a kingbolt, a, pivoted to the bob, and the head of this king-bolt has rigidly attached to it or formed integral with it two trunnions, b 1), pro jecting laterally from opposite sides thereof and connected with journal-bearings c a, rigidly secured to the under side of the body. The described connections allow the bob to turn in a horizontal plane without straining the runners, and also to rock in a vertical plane parallel with the longitudinal center of the body, and thus obviate undue jarring of the body when traveling over an uneven road.
In order to relieve the king-bolt from excessive torsional strain, I employ a fifth-wheel, the lower plate, d, of which is rigid on the bob, and the upper plate, 01, is firmly attached to the king bolt.
To securely sustain the fifth-wheel, I mount the same on knees e e e e, radiating from the fifth-wheel or from a point central over the two runners of the bob, as shown in Fig. 2 of (N0 model.)
the drawings, and arched, as best seen in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
The rear portion of the body A is mounted on runners r 1', which are rigidly attached at their forward ends to the body and have their rear ends curved upward and preferably thence forward, as illustrated at r in Fig. 1 of the drawings. On the top of the said upwardeurved ends of the runners 1" 1" is mounted a cross-bar, f, which may be connected thereto in any suitable manner, so as to cause said cross-bar to tie said ends of the runners to each other, and upon this cross-bar is supported the body A, which may be either mounted directly thereon, as shown, or connected therewith by means of suitable hangers or arms similar to those by which vehiclebodies are hung on spring-bars secured to the top of elliptic springs at the ends of the body. The aforesaid upward-curved ends r of the runners can be made to serve as springs for the support of the body, and, in fact, both ends of each runner can be made elastic by forming each runner of a continuous bar of springsteel bent into the shape of the runner, as hereinbefore described. The lower portions of the runners r r are braced laterally by arched knees or bars h h, extending across the sleigh and secured at opposite ends to the aforesaid portions of the runners.
When the runners r 1" have their lower portions formed with a continuous curve, as shown, I elongate the road-bearings of the runners by attaching thereto rearwardly-extended supplemental runners t t, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Having described my i nvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. A bob having its knees radiating from a point central over the two runners, as set forth and shown.
2. A bob having a fifth-wheel supported by knees radiating from said fifth-wheel, substan tially as described and shown.
The combination of the bob having a fifthwheel supported by knees radiating from the lower plate of said fifth-wheel, the king-bolt secured to the upper plate of the fifth-wheel,
trunnions projecting from opposite sides of the head of the king-bolt, andjournal-bearings for the trunnions secured to the body, substantially as described.
4. A sleigh having its knees arched and radiating from a point central over the two runners, substantially as described and shown.
5. A sleigh having the front portion of the body mounted on a bob, runners rigidly secured at their forward ends to the body and having their rear ends curved upward and forward, a crossbar mounted 011 said rear ends of the runners, and the rear end of the body mounted on said crossbar, substantially as described and shown.
6. A sleigh having runners each formed of a continuous piece, secured at the forward end to the body, and the rear end bent upward and forward, a crossbar secured to the top of the rear ends of said runners, the body supported on said crossbar, and lateral braces secured'at opposite ends to thelower portions of the two runners, substantially as described and shown.
7. The combination, with the body, of bobs under the front portion of said body, runners having their forward ends rigidly secured to the body and their rear ends curved upward and forward, a cross-bar secured to the top of said rear ends of the runners, the body supported on said cross-bar, lateral braces sustaining the lower portions of the runners, and supplemental runners extending from the aforesaid runners, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two witnesses, at Cortland, in the county of Cortland, in the State of New York, this 29th day of June, 1888.
