Referring to the drawings, Figure l represents a vertical central section of a furnace having the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a viewin horizontal section upon the line x 20 a of Fig. l, a portion of the upper part of the fire-pot wall being removed to show a plan of the parts below. Fig. 3 is a View in elevation of a portion of the base of the furnace and of the firepot wall, a portion thereof being removed the better to show the construction. Figs. 4c and 5 are enlarged detail views of the fire-pot wall. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section upon the line y y of Fig. 1 and a plan of the parts below such line.

The plate 6 supports, also, the balls f, upon which is mounted the movable plate F, having upon its bottom surface the downwardly-extending teeth f, with which the pawl 12, which is pivoted upon the operating arm or shank d of the grate, is adapted to engage.
The grate-shan k (1 extends horizontally from the edge of the grate into the entrance or passage a to the ash pit, and it rests upon the cross-bar or stirrup-like support d which is suspended from the frame of the furnace by the depending arms at. From the wall of the ash-pit A an arm, LP, is extended horizontally outward to a point which is central to the firepot wall and its ring E, and the grate D is provided with a short central bar or web, (1. which, when the grate is in place, is received between two oppositely placed lugs, d (Z which project upwardly from the upper surface of the bar, the coincident vertical faces of such lugs being beveled or cut away in a vertical plane to permit reciprocation of the grate, and also to enable the operator to discharge the contents of the grate into the ashpit as occasion may require, such operation being readily effected by slightly turning the shank of the grate in a vertical plane and downward from left to right.

It is necessary to provide this move ment, in order that ashes, soot, and other ref use falling from the fire-pot may be moved to a point from which they may be discharged into the ashpit, andthis I prefer to do by means of a scraper or deflector, S, which is arranged to project into the space or passage 2) at a point opposite the front opening to the chamber 1) and immediately above the plate F, and at such an angle as to discharge the ashes and other refuse therefrom as the plate is removed into or through the opening G into the ash-pit. This opening is adapted to be closed by the sliding plate 9.
The volatile products of combustion may pass directly from the combustion chamber through the passage h to the horizontal pipe h, which connects with the uptake; or, if it is desired to obtain a larger radiating-surface, the damper h in the passage It may be closed, and the products of combustion will then be caused to pass through the pipe or passage it about the furnace on either side to the passage h at the front of the furnace, which connects the upper pipe, 72, 201 the two sections thereof, with the lower sections or passages, 1L5, which extend about the furnace and open at it into the passage h.
M is the air-heating space or hot'air chamber of the furnace, and m are openings in the casing to receive the heat-conducting pipes at.
The section N of the furnace, which comprises the inclined plane n, forming the lower surface of the passage to the combustionchamber, and the section a, forming a portion of the front of the furnace, is removable, and
the inner section, 12*, forms, when in place, a part of the coal-guard a. The plate is made inclined, so that the fuel will not lodge thereon, but will fall through its own gravity into the firepot. By making the section removable and of such construction that a portion of it shall act as a coalguard, the passages to the encircling chamber 1) and to the combustion-chamber are upon its withdrawal converted into one and access to the interior of the furnace is morereadily effected.
Although I have herein described the system of direct and indirect draft-fines which constitute the radiator of the furnace, it will be understood that I do not herein make claim of novelty therefor, the same being embraced in application Serial No. 193,580, filed by me in the United States Patent Office on the 1st day of March, 1886. It will also be understood that I do not herein broadly claim either a revoluble plate at the base of a fire-pot wall or a firepot the wall of which is composed of vertical sections, such constructions being shown in my patent, No. 281,795, already referred to.
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination, in a heating stove or furnace, of a stationary fire-pot wall, I), supported above the ash-pit, the non-revoluble grate D, suit-ably held and adapted to be oscillated, and the imperforate movable ashcarrying plate F, substantially as described.
2. In astove or furnace, the combination of the wall b surrounding the fire-pot and forming the chamber b, in connection therewith, the closed chamber b, extending from top to bottom of the fire-pot, the stationary fire-pot wall I), and the imperforate movable plate F, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the ash-pit wall, the iuwardly-projecting imperforate plate 6, secured to such ash-pit wall, theisolated fire-pot wall resting upon the plate 6, and the chamber b between the tirepot wall and the downward continuation of the wall of the combustionehamber and closed at top and bottom, as described.
4. The combination of the ash-p it wall, the imperforate inwardly-projecting plate 6, secured to such ash-pit wall, the isolated nonrevoluble fire-pot wall, the revolnble imperforate ash carrying plate F, and the scraper or deflector S, substantially as and for the purprses specified.
