SPECIFICATION forming'lpart of Letters Patent No. 391,300, dated October 16, 1888.

Application filed June 16, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that l, JAMES R. CLUXTON, of Xenia, in the county of Greene and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pillows; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and eX- aot description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved spring pillow or cushion partly in section. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the springs.

This invention is an improvement in cushions and pillows, and its objects are to provide alight, ventilated, and comfortable spring-pillow; and to these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and yconcisely stated in the claims hereto appended.

Referring to the drawings by letters, A indicates the frame of the pillow, which is composed of a series of M shaped springs, B, having a coil at each of their angles to increase their pliability. The springs B are placed on their side or legs b b, and alternate springs face in opposite directions, as shown. The legs Z) are connected by wires or straps C C at opposite ends, and by intermediate wires or straps, c c, which wires O c extend the length of frame A and keep the springs in proper relative position. Springs B are also connected at their central bends by wires or straps c c', as shown, for further bracing the frame. This frame A is very iieXible and yielding; but the depression of one part of the frame will cause the tensioning or compression ofall of the springs to agreater or less degree, so that the frame will not readily become distorted, owing to undue wear on any one spring.

The frame A, constructed substantially as described, is made up the desired size for a pillow or cushion, and it is then inclosed by a cotton sack, D, upon which a padding of excelsior77 or hair, E, is placed and secured to shape the cushion. Padding Eis then covered by cotton batting c or other suitable material, and finally over all is drawn a tick or sack, F, which holds the wadding in place,

thus affording a smooth soft surface to the cushion, which, if desired, may have a finishing-cover of any desired material. The end of the frame is preferably not covered, to permit free circulation of air therein, which greatlyincreases the comfort of the cushion in warm weather.

G G are eye-loops secured to the upper and lower edges of the tick F at the sides thereof; andy are cords secured to an eye, G, at one corner of the cushion and then passed alternately through the remaining eyes on the upper and lower edges to the opposite end ofthe cushion. By tightening or loosening this cord the height or thickness of the cushion can be regulated. It is then ready for the ordinary pillow dress or case.

Having described my invention, I claim- 1. In a pillow, the combination of a springframe having an exteriorupholstering or cover, with the series of eye-loops on the side edges of the cover, and the cords passed alternately through opposite loops on the same side of the pillow, substantially as specified.

2. The combination ofspring-frame A, composed of IVI -shaped spring-wires B and bracewires C, connecting said springs, with the covering-tick D, loop-eyes G on the side edges thereof, and the cords g, passed alternately through the opposite eyes at the same side of the pillow, substantially as specified.

3. In a pillow, the combination of the frame A, composed of the springs B B, each formed of a single wire bent into an IVI shape and having a coil at each of its bends, said springs being set in alternate directions, and the wires C C, 4connecting the springs at the side edges of the frame, and the wires c c, connecting said springs at'top and bottom and at their central side bends at intermediate points between wires C O, with the inclosing upholstering for said frame, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
