To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK SANDER- SON, of Prospect Park, Du Page county, 1lli nois, and EDWARD H. \VINOHELL, ot' Norwood Park, Cook county, Illinois, both citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon End-Gates, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention consists of an end-gate or tail-board of a wagon, and hinges and fastenings thereto for opening and closing the hind end of wagon-beds, being so constructed, ap plied, and arranged that the gate or board may be easily closed and securely fastened, readily unfastened, and speedily removed and without difficulty.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which this invention pertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation,referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view.
A A represent the usual side-boards of a wagon-bed, B the bottom of the same, 0 the gate or tail-board.
D is a brace-rod for the side-boards of the wagon-bed, and aids in holding the end-gate down in position, as will be presently eX- plained. This rod passes from and is connected to the side-boards A A. Ve preferably form both ends of said rod with hooks, which fit in eyes countersunk in the cleats, allowing the eyes to project, the shanks of said eyes passing through the cleats and side-boards and screw-threaded at their outer ends and provided with nuts, whereby adjustment is secured, as shown. \Ve may, however, makeit a continuous rod passing entirely through the cleats and Sideboards, having one end formed with an eye and the other scrcw-threaded,and provided with a nut. In this construction the nut having been removed the rod can be pulled out. \Ve prefer, however, the former construction, as it enables us to readily unhook the rod and remove it when we remove the tail-board, if desired.
Upon the inner side of the tail-board O we K, near the outer end of the tail-board 0, this slot preferably being provided with a metal plate to prevent wear. It is evident that the opposite cleat, L, could be hinged and provided with the spring and locking devices;
but we prefer to make it rigid or stationary,
being secured to the side-board with sufficient space between it and the cleat E to form a groove for the reception and retention of one end of the tail-board, the other end of the board being retained by a groove formed by the cleats E and G.
The cleat G is beveled, as shown, to permit of it freely turning and to prevent binding.
The operation is simple and readily understood from the drawings. The tail-board being looked in position, as shown in Fig. 1, in order to remove the same we release the look by compressing the spring and turn it to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The
cleat G is then swung back and the end-board 8o removed and also the rod D, if desired.
It will be noticed that the lock H also acts as a lever to turn the cleat G. It is also evident that the tail-board 0 holds the rod in position when the parts are closed.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wagon end-gate, the hinged cleat G, provided with the bevel 9, spring I, entering slot in the cleat, and lock H, provided with a right-angled tongue, in combination with the board O, provided with the slot K, and sideboard A,snbstantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a wagon end-gate, the combination of the boards AA, having the cleats E and L, the hinged beveled cleat, and lock H, construoted as described, the end-board G, having oleat F F and slot K; and the rod 1), located in the inside of the end-board O, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose 5 set forth.
3. In a wagon end-gate, the combination of the hinged cleat G and slotted end-board O with the lock H and spring I, the lock H serving as a lever, substantially as shown'and de- IO scribed, and for the purpose set-forth.
