AUTOMATIC FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,245, dated October 16, 1888. Application filed April 11, 1887. Serial No. 234,366. (No model.)

Be it known that I, WILLIAM HASLAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ihiladelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Fans; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved novel and simplified construction of that class of automatic fans used for agitating and cooling the air in countingrooms, factories, &c.; and my improvements consist, essentially, in the novel details of construction and general arrangement of the several parts andin mechanism for changing the position of the fan-blades to various inclinations or angles to increase or diminish the aircurrents, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, and Fig. 2 a detail view thereof.

In carrying out my invention the fan-blades and mechanism for operating the same are secured upon the usual vertical spindle or shaft, A, which is supported in brackets and has a rotary motion imparted to it through the me dium of a power-driven belt and pulley or other mechanical equivalent.
The hub or collar D, carrying the faublades E,is secured to the vertical spindle A by asetscrew, or by other suitable means, and is provided with two downwardly-projecting arms, B, one on each side, each terminating in an enlarged portion, 0, centrally bored to receive the cylindrically-shaped shanks of the fanblades, as shown in the drawings.
F represents a sleeve or collar capable of being moved up or down upon the lower end of the spindle or shaft A, and is preferably held in position thereon by means ofa springactuated catch, Z2, located in a chambered recess in a projection, 0, extending outwardly to one side of said sleeve or collar, the inner beveled end ofsaid rod or plunger engaging with one of a series of indentations or corrugations, d, upon the side of the spindle A to hold said sleeve at the desired position upon the spindle or shaft. Formed integral with the said sleeve or collar F are provided two upwardly-projectiug arms, F, one on each side, the upper ends of which are provided with elongated slots 0, as shown.
G represents the lovers or arms for connecting the shanks of the fan-blades and the arms of the sleeve or collar F, their upper ends being provided with a half-cylindrical opening adapted to slip over the correspondingly-shaped inner ends of the shanks of the fan-blades, a split pin being passed through an opening in the end of each of the said shanks to hold the two parts together, while the lower ends of the said connecting arms or lovers are provided with inwardly-projecting pins or rounded lugs 9, adapted to fit and move within the elongated slots in the upper ends of the arms F of the sleeve or collar F.
In the operation of my invention the angle or inclination of the fan-blades E may be adjusted at the desired point to increase or diminish the air-currents by moving the sleeve F, according to the circumstances, up or down upon the spindle A by means of the hand-piece H, pivotally attached to the lower end of the said sleeve F.
By meansof my improvements I am enabled to provide an improved construction which will be positive and effective in its action, reliable and durable in operation, and which can be produced at a reduced cost over devices hitherto used for a similar purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an automatic fan, the combination, with the spindle, of a collar surrounding and secured to the same, having downwardlyprojecting arms provided with smooth cylindrical bearings at their lower ends, fans having inwardly extending cylindrical shanks journaled in and projecting inwardly beyond said bearings, crank-arms secured to the inner ends of said shanks, a sleeve surrounding said spindle, which is provided with upwardly-extending arms having elongated slots in their upper ends,in which are placed the horizontal portions of said crank-arms, and a catch for holding said sleeve in place, substantially as described.
