Abstract

MULTI-PURPOSE WINDOW BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates to windows for use in institutions such as hospitals and the like, and, more particularly for a window capable of assuming any of several possible positions.
In institutions such as hospitals and the like as well as in homes, it often occurs that there is need for a multiposition type window which is capable of permitting ventilation while preventing rain and snow from entering and objects from being thrown out therefrom and also permitting easy cleaning. Therefore, it is desirable to provide for such a window, a mechanism for selecting any of several window positions so as to achieve the desired function.
An object of this invention is to provide a multiposition window mechanism which is capable of being controlled to select any of a number of positions for the window.
Another object of this invention is to provide a multiposition window mechanism which is capable of being either locked, tilted for ventilations purposes, or swung in about one side edge for cleaning purposes.
Another object of this invention is to provide such a multi-position window mechanism which is capable of easy operation, is efficient and inexpensive to manufacture.
Still another object of this invention is to provide such a multi-position window which is also capable of being locked in the closed position so as to prevent inadvertent swinging open of the window by unauthorized persons, while still allowing the window to tilt to the ventilating position.
Another object of this invention is to provide such a multi-position window in which the amount of tilt opening is controlled by an easily adjustable member.
Other objects, advantages and features of the invention will become more apparent from the following description.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In accordance with the principles of this invention, the above objects are accomplished by providing a multi-position window mechanism capable of being tilted with the top open for ventilation purposes and swung open by being pivoted on one side of the window comprising a movable control handle means for driving a train member along the edge of the window, a frame member being fixed to the structure in which the window is mounted, a sash member movable with respect to the frame, a sash tilting means attached to the frame and sash members to allow the sash member to tilt about the horizontal axis to permit opening at the top of the window for ventilation purposes, the tilting means being controlled by the movable control handle means, and swing means attached to one side of the window to per the permit member to swing open about the side under control of the movable control handle.
A lock member is provided along one edge of the window which locks the sash member in position within the frame by means ofa finger blocking the train mechanism, thereby preventing the sash member from being swung open unless desired by an authorized person, but, at the same time, the sash member can be operated to the tilt position.
By enabling the sash member to be either in a locked position, a tilted position or a swung open position, the
objects of the above invention are accomplished by the simple and efficient mechanisms as will be set forth in more detail hereinbelow.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION Referring to the drawings, and in particular to FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, there is shown the multi-position window of this invention in three positions. With reference to FIG. 1, there is shown the window 10 installed in a suitable wall 12 or the like, the multi-position window being shown in a tilt position with the sash member 14 cooperating with frame member 16 and tiltable about the bottom edge 18 to permit ventilation. Illustrated in FIG. 1, is a handle control member 20 shown in an upwardly position, this position being the one which will allow the multi-position window to be in the tilt position and adjustable scissor member 22 is connected between the frame 16 and sash member 14 to adjust the amount of opening at the top. With reference to FIG. 2, there is shown the same window mechanism 10 in the wall 12, but in this position, the sash is in the swing position, the sash being swung open about a side edge 24 to accommodate cleaning or other similar functions. In this position, the handle member 20 is shown in its downward position and a key operated lock member 26, the function of which will be explained in more detail hereinbelow, is in its unlocked position to permit the window to swing about the side edge 24. With regard to FIG. 3, the multi-position window mechanism is shown in its closed position, with the handle member 20 being in a substantially horizontal position. Additionally, in FIG. 3, there is shown tilt pivot member 28 to be explained in more detail, the pivot member being located on one lower corner of the window, while another pivot means 30 is located on the opposite lower corner to permit the tilt position shown in FIG. 1 to be achieved.
With particular regard to FIG. 4, there is shown a schematic representation of the multi-position window mechanism with each of the operative members illustrated in block form in FIG. 4 while being illustrated in more detail in the corresponding figures.
Briefly, the position of the multi-position window is selected in accordance with the position of handle member 20, the handle member driving a train member 32 around the side of the sash member 14 in accordance with the position of the handle 20. As the drive train member 32 moves about the side edge of the sash, selected ones of the tilt means comprising tilt pivot member 28 and tilt hinge plate and swing bearing 36 (corresponding to pivot means 30) will be engaged for the tilt position, while the swing means comprising upper swing member 38 (FIG. 9) and the previously designated hinge plate 36 will be engaged with the key operated lock member 40 being moved to a nonlocking position. When the handle 20 is in the horizontal position as indicated, the window is closed, and the handle need merely be moved upwardly for the window to assume the tilt position.
Referring particularly to FIG. 8, there is shown an enlarged view of the control drive handle member 20. The handle is attached securely to the sash by means well known to the art and has associated therewith a drive mechanism 44 not indicated on FIG. 8 and a projecting finger member 46 controlled by the movement of handle 20. The drive train or push rod 32 may be comprised of a plurality of individually connected members such as a link chainor a single member suitable to move about the side edge of a window and includes, as an example thereof, a drive plate 48 secured to the train 32 by means of bolts 50 and 52. The plate 48 has a recess area 54 which cooperates with projecting finger member 46 so that as the handle position moves the drive plate 48 is carried correspondingly either upwardly or downwardly as the case may be.
Referring now to FIGS. through 7, there is shown the tilt hinge bracket and swing bearing 36 and the tilt member 28, respectively, in greater detail. With regard to the tilt hinge plate swing bearing 36, there is provided a ball and socket joint member 56 in the lower portion of the tilt hinge plate to permit a tilting action to be achived in cooperation with the pivoting at member 28 but, in addition, the tilt hinge plate and swing bearing 36 also is provided with a projecting member 58 cooperating within a recess 60 to permit a swinging motion along the side 24 of the sash member 14. The tilt hinge plate and swing bearing 36, therefore, permits both a tilt and swing position to be achieved without changing the relationship of the members therein. By controlling the handle 20, other portions of the tilt means or swing means will be engaged so as to cooperate with the tilt hinge plate and swing bearing 36 to effectuate either a tilt or swing position.
Referring now to FIGS. 6 and 7, there is shown the tilting bracket 28 in more detail. When the handle member is moved upwardly, the drive train member 32 is moved downwardly on the left side and moves a finger 61 behind a fixed keeper 62, which is attached to the frame. When the finger 61 is moved behind keeper 62, the swinging movement of the window is blocked. In this position a cam member 63 rides on a bent plate 64 providing a pivot point on the left bottom side of the window for the tilt position.
With reference to FIG. 11, it will be noted that there is shown in more detail, the key operated lock mechanism 40 located in the upper right hand portion of the window. This mechanism comprises a key operated lock 42 and a projecting finger member 44. The finger member 44 is movable from a horizontal to a vertical position as shown and is located just below the end of train member 32. When the finger 44 is in the vertical position, it bears against train member 32 preventing its movement and the movement of handle 20 from the horizontal position. In this position the window will be prevented from swinging since pin member 61 is located behind keeper 62, but will not be prevented from tilting. When it is desired to have the window swing in, an authorized individual can operate the lock 42 so as to swing the finger 44 out of blocking engagement so as to enable the handle 20 to move downwardly.
With regard to FIG. 9, there is shown a perspective view of the upper right hand corner of the window mechanism. This portion is used to control the swing position as well as the amount of opening by use of a scissor mechanism 22 comprising arms 6768 with one end of arm 68 adjustable settable in a slot 69 formed in the sash member. For the tilt position, the scissor arm assembly enables the top of the window to be opened an amount as determined by the setting of arm 68 in slot 69.
When the handle member is driven downwardly, the drive train associated therewith is moved upwardly so that drive train member 32 is moved rightwardly along the top edge of the window as shown by the arrow in FIG. 9. Carried on the drive train member 32 is a pin member 70 which is engageable with a slot member 71 (shown dotted), the arm member 68 being fixedly attached in line with arm 67 by means of the engagement of pin member 70 and slot 71. In this position, a swing means is formed of hinge members 72 and 73 operating together and in cooperation with the tilt hinge plate and swing bearing 36 at the lower right hand corner, enables the window to swing about the side edge thereof. When the handle is moved to the mid-position, the pin comes out of engagement with slot 71 so as to permit the window to freely tilt and the arm 68 to pivot with respect to arm 67.
As yet another unique feature of this invention, there is provided a safety detent device 74 shown in greater detail in FIG. 10. This device is for preventing the drive train 32 from being moved when the swing position is utilized. The safety detent is located in the upper edge of the multi-position window mechanism and is controlled by the drive train 32. The safety detent comprises a movable pin 76 controlled by the drive train mechanism 32 and a rotatable lever 77 rotated about a rivet 78. A hair spring member 80 bears against a projecting arm portion 82 of lever 77 urging it downwardly" as seen in FIG. 10. The hairspring member 80 is held in position by means of a screw 84 with flexible end portion 86 of the spring member bearing against a pin 88 to cause positive pressure on said projecting end portion 82 of the lever 77. When the handle is moved to its normal horizontal position and the window is closed, a bearing edge portion 90 of lever 77 bears against the frame and moves the lever to the position shown. When the window is open and the handle 20 is moved down so that pin 76 is moved rightward, the pin locks into hook portion 91 of lever 77 to prevent the train from being moved and to prevent inadvertent mishandling of the trian in this position.
Thus, there has been described a unique multiposition window mechanism in which the window is capable of assuming a tilt position for ventilation purposes, in which position it is difficult for objects to be thrown from the window. Additionally, the adjustable scissor member 22 allows the amount of air intake to be adjusted and, in case of smoke on the inside of the building, people may receive direct fresh air by placing their faces against the window opening. Additionally, when the multi-position window is in its swing position, the window is capable of being easily cleaned and, by utilization of the key operated lock mechanism 40, only authorized individuals can move the window to the swing position. This prevents the window from being inadvertently swung open so as to permit objects to be thrown therefrom or people to jump therefrom. Additionally, the detent safety device prevents the train from being moved when the window is in its swing open position. In the tilt position, another benefit realized is the elimination of the possibility of rain or snow entering the window because of the direction of the tilt.
It will thus be seen that the objects set forth above, among those made apparent from the preceding description, are efficiently attained and, since certain changes may be made in the above apparatus without departing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description and shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
1. A multi-purpose window mechanism capable of being tilted with the top open for ventilation purposes and swung open by pivoting on a side thereof comprising a sash member having a movable control means,
a frame member cooperating with said sash member, said frame member being fixed to the structure in which the window is mounted,
tilting means attached to said frame and sash members to enable said sash member to tilt about a horizontal axis to permit an opening at the top of the window for ventilation purposes,
swing means attached to one side of said sash and said frame to permit the sash member to swing open about one side thereof,
said movable control means being attached to said window mechanism for selectively engaging either said tilting means or said swing means to tilt said sash member or swing-in said sash member, respectively,
said movable control means comprising a manually controlled handle attached to said sash member, a movable drive train movable about the side edges of the sash member, said handle coupled to said drive train to move said drive train to slectively engage said tilt means or said swing means,
a key operated lock means attached to said sash member being remotely located from said handle, said key operated lock means capable of preventing said sash member from being swung inwardly by other than as authorized individual,
said key operated lock means comprising a latch means, said latch means including a finger member being movable by a key into a blocking position to block movement of the train and prevent said handle from being moved to a position for engaging said swing means,
i said tilt means comprising at least a pair of pivot means located on opposite bottom corners of said window,
wherein said control means further comprises a projecting member attached to said handle to be moved thereby, said drive train being located in said sash member and including a drive plate having a recess adapted to receive said projecting member, said projecting member bearing against the recess in the drive plate to move said drive train, 7
said handle being movable from a center to two other positions, the first of said other positions allowing for a tilting operation, the center position allowing for a closed window position, and the second of said other positions enabling said sash member to swing about a side thereof,
said swing means including at least a pair of pivot means, at least one of said pivot means comprising fixed and movable cooperating members, said movable cooperating member being driven by said drive train means,
further comprising keeper means fixedly attached to said frame and pin means movable by said train member into blocking engagement with said keeper to prevent said sash from swinging when said train movement is blocked by said lock means, and
wherein said lock means is located at one end of said drive train, said finger member being movable against said one end of said drive train to block movement of said drive train.

Claims (1)

1. A multi-purpose window mechanism capable of being tilted with the top open for ventilation purposes and swung open by pivoting on a side thereof comprising a sash member having a movable control means, a frame member cooperating with said sash member, said frame member being fixed to the structure in which the window is mounted, tilting means attached to said frame and sash members to enable said sash member to tilt about a horizontal axis to permit an opening at the top of the window for ventilation purposes, swing means attached to one side of said sash and said frame to permit the sash member to swing open about one side thereof, said movable control means being attached to said window mechanism for selectively engaging either said tilting means or said swing means to tilt said sash member or swing-in said sash member, respectively, said movable control means comprising a manually controlled handle attached to said sash member, a movable drive train movable about the side edges of the sash member, said handle coupled to said drive train to move said drive train to slectively engage said tilt means or said swing means, a key operated lock means attached to said sash member being remotely located from said handle, said key operated lock means capable of preventing said sash member from being swung inwardly by other than as authorized individual, said key operated lock means comprising a latch means, said latch means including a finger member being movable by a key into a blocking position to block movement of the train and prevent said handle from being moved to a position for engaging said swing means, said tilt means comprising at least a pair of pivot means located on opposite bottom corners of said window, wherein said control means further comprises a projecting member attached to said handle to be moved thereby, said drive train being located in said sash member and including a drive plate having a recess adapted to receive said projecting member, said projecting member bearing against the recess in the drive plate to move said drive train, said handle being movable from a center to two other positions, the first of said other positions allowing for a tilting operation, the center position allowing for a closed window position, and the second of said other positions enabling said sash member to swing about a side thereof, said swing means including at least a pair of pivot means, at least one of said pivot means comprising fixed and movable cooperating members, said movable cooperating member being driven by said drive train means, further comprising keeper means fixedly attached to said frame and pin means movable by said train member into blocking engagement with said keeper to prevent said sash from swinging when said train movement is blocked by said lock means, and wherein said lock means is located at one end of said drive train, said finger member being movable against said one end of said drive train to block movement of said drive train.
