UNITED STATES PATENT OFFrcE.
HARRISON OANN, OF PAW PAW, VEST VIRGINIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 391,116, dated Qctolcer 16, 1888.
Application filed May 4, 1888. Serial No. 272,805. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRISON GANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paw Paw, in the county of Morgan and State of \Vest Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in plows; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is aperspective view of a plow embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the opposite side of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4: isa rear elevation. Fig. 5 is a detail horizontal section, taken on the line a: w of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective View of the landside-plate.
A represents the landside-plate, which is .curved on its rear edge, as shown, and is hollowed on its front edge near its upper side, so as to form a curved recess, 13, and a forwardextending arm, 0, arranged over the said recess. The front edge of the landside-plate is Y broadened to form a re-enforcing flange, D, on
the inner side of the landside-plate, and in the front edge of said plate, on the inner side of the same, is formed a recess, E.
F represents the mold-board, which has its lower edge beveled, and is provided on its front side with a rearward-extending plate, G, which bears against the inner side of the land side-plate. The lower edge of the landsideplate is broadened to form the flange H, against which rests a sole-plate, I, that has its front end extended beyond the lower corner of the landside-plate, and sharpened to form apoint, K. lhe under side of the sole-plate is recessed to receive a plate, L, the outer edge of which-is beveled, as shown, and projects beyond the landside and forms a cutting-edge. Bolts M extend through the plateL and through the plate I, and serve to secure the same to landsideplate. On the inner edge of the point K is formed an inclined groove, N.
0 represents a share-plate, which is bolted to the inclined lower edge of the mold-board F, and has one end secured in the groove N. Both ends of the said share-plate are alike, so
that the same may be removed from the moldboard and reversed when one edge thereof becomes worn. In the upper side of the point K, near the rear end thereof, is a groove, P, which communicates with the lower end of the recess or groove E.
R represents a cutter or colter, the rear edge of which is adapted to be inserted in the groove E, and the lower edge of which is adapted to be inserted in the groove P, so as to secure the colter firmly to the plowshare, and at the same time to allow the colter to be removed therefrom and be replaced by another when it becomes worn or broken.
S represents a cross-brace, which connects the landside and the mold-board near their rear edges, and has its ends bentat right angles and bolted to said landside-plate and mold-board. The said cross-bar S is provided near its center with a longitudinal slot, T.
U represents a pair of plow-handles of the usual construction, which are bolted to the inner sides of the mold board and landsideplates, and are connected near their rear end by cross rod or rung V.
W represents the plow-beam,which is made of metal, is fulcrumed to the inner side of the projecting arm 0, near the front end thereof, by means of a bolt, X, and has its rear end curved downward and provided with an extension, Y, having a vertical slot, Z. A bolt, A, passes through the said slot and through the slot T in the cross-brace, and is provided with a clainpingnut, whereby the rear end of the beam may be secured to the crossbrace at any inclination or at any desired lateral adjustment, so as to regulate the draft of the plow, as will be readily understood.
When the plow is in operation, the shareplate 0 and sole-plate L by bearing against the bottom of the furrow are worn so as to keep their edges sharp at all times, thereby causing the plow to run smoothly and lessening the draft thereof. The cutter-plate B serves to cut the landside edge of the furrow, and the recess B in the front edge of the landside-plate serves to permit trash to slip through the same and fall from the plowshare on the landside thereof and prevent the plow from becoming choked.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of .the landside-plate,
the plate I, secured to the lower edge thereof and having the point extending forward therefrom, said point having the recess N on one side, the mold-board having its lower edgeiuclined, and the share-plate O, bolted to the lower edge of the mold-board, having its front inner edge arranged in the recess N, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the landside-plate, the plate I under the lower edge of the same and having the recess in its lower side, and the sole-plate L in the said recess, and having the outwardlyextending beveled edge projecting beyond thelandside-plate, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a plow, of the landside-plate, the mold-board, the crossbar S, connectingsaid plate and mold-board and hav-- ing the transverse slot T, the beam C- the pivotal bolt connecting the same to the landside, said beam having the vertical slot at its 4 rear end arranged transversely on the crossbarS,and-theclamping-bolt extendingthrough said vertical slot and through the slot l; whereby the beam may be adjusted vertically and laterally, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the landside-plate' having the recess E in the front edge, the moldboard having the rearward'extending plate G, secured to the inner side of the landside'plate, the sole-plate secured to the. lower edge of the landside-plate, and having the groove Pon its upper side communicating with the groove E, and the cutter or colter having its rear edge inserted in the groove E and bearing between the plate G and the landside-plate, and its lower edge inserted in the groove 1?, substantially as described.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in preso WVitnesses:
EDMUND PENDLETON, HENRY SNIDEMILLER.
