Abstract

Device for controlling the operation of a winding unit in automatic winding machines, said winding unit having a clutch and a brake. The device controls the operation of both the clutch and the brake of the winding unit during winding, as well as during the automatic removal of yarn breakage, during knotting of the yarn end from a new supply cop, and upon eliminating pattern winding on the wound bobbin. The device has a series of cams and levers; a first lever forms on one hand a component of mechanism for disengaging the winding unit from the drive, and on the other hand a component of mechanism for controlling the clutch and the brake of the winding unit upon automatic removal of yarn breakage or upon knotting the yarn end of a new supply cop, said first lever constituting at the same time the main control element for engaging and disengaging a single-revolution clutch through which the bobbin driving distributor of the winding unit is driven.

No. 103,845, filed Mar. 5, 1971, now abandoned, which in turn is a continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 104,927, filed Jan. 9, 1971, now abandoned.
The device according to the present invention relates to an improved device for controlling the operation of a winding unit in automatic winding machines, includ ing the elimination of pattern winding.
From the viewpoint of the drive of a winding unit, i.e. particularly the yarn distributor and thus also the bobbin, winding machines may be divided into two groups.
One group (I) includes these machines having a group drive, i.e. a drive common to several winding units or common to a whole side of the machine; the other group (II) includes machines in which such drive is individual, i.e. in which the driving of the distributing disc and further driven components of the winding unit is performed by means of an independent driving source.
The common disadvantage of all embodiments in machines with the said group I drive consists in a complicated disengagement of the winding unit from the driving parts of the automatic winding machine upon the repair and disassembling of the machine, it is necessary to take into account not only a long, time-consuming, and complicated assembling operation, but also in most cases the stoppage of the whole winding machine, or of one whole side of that machine, as the case may be during dismounting a winding unit.
The device according to the present invention has among its objects the overcoming of the said disadvantagages by using a unit drive for the separate winding units. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the device has a lever system controlled by three cams, said cams controlling the action of the clutch and the brake of the winding unit during winding as well as during automatic removal of yarn breakage, or upon knotting the yarn end from a new supply cop, and upon eliminating pattern winding on the wound bobbin.

ent invention are set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, of which:
FIG. 1 is a somewhat diagrammatic axonometric view of the overall arrangement of a winding unit incorporating the device in accordance with the invention;

FIG. 3 is a diagrammatic section through the driving part of the device according to the present invention in front view;
FIG. 3a is a view similar to FIG. 3 but with the parts shown in their shifted position in which the winding drum has been stopped.
FIG. 4 is a diagrammatic side view of a part of the single-revolution clutch of the device according to the present invention; and
FIG. 5 is a section through one embodiment of a single-revolution clutch of the device according to the present invention, the section being taken along line 55 of FIG. 4.
In FIG. 1 there is shown somewhat diagrammatically the overall arrangement of a winding unit incorporating a device in accordance with the invention. Such device which is generally designated 1, as shown generally as a dash line parallelepiped in FIG. 1 and specifically in FIGS. 2-5, inclusive. Device 1 is supported between spaced parallel vertical plate frame members 52, 52a.
A yarn supply cop 21 held upon a cop holder 20 supplies yarn 22, which is pulled generally verically past device 1 up to a driven yarn distributor 16 affixed to and co-axial of a driven shaft 15 joumalled in members 52, 52a. The yarn 22 is received in a groove in the surface of distributor 16, said groove having oppositely inclined helical parts 23, 24, whereby the yarn is cross wound upon a bobbin 25. Bobbin 25 overlies and has rim contact with the distributor 16, being mounted on spaced arms 26 pivotally carried by a cross shaft 29. The shaft 15, and thus the bobbin 25, are selectively driven from a suitable driving means through a brakev drum device 18 having a flange 18a.
The device according to the present invention comprises a driven main shaft which rotates at a constant speed in the direction of arrow S (FIG. 2). On said shaft 100 there is fixedly secured a main cam 101 which is in contact with a cam follower roller 103 on bell crank lever 104, the lever 104 being oscillatable about the axis of shaft 108 onwhich it is mounted for oscillation free of the shaft in the direction of arrow T.
Moreover, there is a cam 105 mounted on the main shaft 100, cam 105 being provided with projections 105a, of which one can be seen in FIG. 2, said projections being distributed about the circumference of cam 105 and serving to eliminate pattern winding. A cam follower roller 106 on a lever 107 bears against the said cam 105; lever 107 is firmly connected to shaft 108, on which there is mounted a further lever 8. Lever 8 has a projection 109 which controls the clutch and the brake as shown in FIG. 3. A bell crank lever 27 is mounted on shaft 108. The horizontal arm of lever 27 has an edge 110 which is in contact with a pawl 28 (see FIGS. 4 and 5), said pawl connecting by a 1:1 ratio gear means 31, 31c (FIG. 5) a cam shaft 111 with a singlerevolution clutch 30 mounted on shaft 100 (FIGS. 4 and 5) for performing a knotting cycle in the appurtenant winding unit.
An upper arm of lever 27 is in contact with roller 122 of lever 107. On the lower arm of lever 27, a small axeshaped detent 113 is pivotally mounted upon a pivot pin 112. The detent 113 is controlled by finger 114 from a yarn stop motion 114a, pivotable about pivot 1 14b, which checks the presence of the wound yarn 22 (See FIG.-2). On lever 27a pivot pin 115 pivotally mounts a slide block 116; block 116 connects lever 27 with lever 117 by means of fork 118 constituting a guideway for said slide block 116. A lever 117, which is mounted pivotably on a shaft 119, on the lower end of fork 118, is provided on its other arm with a roller 120 connected to a cam 121 on cam shaft 1 1 1. On shaft 10 (FIG. 3), which is firmly connected to the brake drum 18 fastened to frame 52 of the winding unit, there is mounted a lever 9. Lever 9 is provided with pin 9a and bearing 9b, said lever 9 being in contact at its upper end with a ball 11, which is mounted in recess 11a of a plate 12.
Plate 12 is traversable on wedge 12a on shaft 15, which in turn is mounted in bearings 15a, 15b of the winding unit and carries a yarn distributor 16. Lever 9 is pivotally mounted about pivot 10 on a lug 130, and is made of one piece from the upper bearing part 90 up to its end which contacts part 11. Bearing 9b is mounted on ends 9a, and has for its purpose the preventing of a sudden impact upon contact of part 109 i with lever 9 by accomplishing a smoother contact or engagement between such two parts. Pulley 14a is mounted on shaft on bearings 14 freely rotatably about said shaft 15, and is driven from a driving means (not shown) by belt 51. Clutch plate 13 is provided with a lining 13a and is firmly connected with said pulley 14a. Clutch plate 12 is firmly mounted to brake disc 17, which is provided about its circumference with a brake lining 17a and is firmly mounted on shaft'15, on which is also firmly mounted yarn distributor 16. (By firmly mounted it is meant that. said parts are entrained by shaft 15 to perform a rotary motion together therewith).
Upon normal operation of the winding unit, clutch plate 12,.firmly connected with brake disc 17, is in that position as shown in FIG. 3, i.e. said clutch plate 12 is in engagement with the lining 13a of clutch plate 13 which is connected firmly to, pulley 14a. Thus, rotary motion is transmitted to shaft 15 and thereupon, yarn distributor 16 on said shaft 15 is imparted a rotary motion. Y
The axial travel of disc 12 with wedge 12a to the left (FIGS. 3) is opposed by coil compression spring 12b. On shaft 100, which is driven at constant speed, there is mounted a single-revolution clutch 30 (FIGS: 4 and. 5) between the cams101, 105; clutch 30 is not shown in FIG. 2 for clarity of illustration. The said singlerevolution clutch 30 is mounted in bearings 31a and is provided with a recess 30a and a gear 31 (See FIG. 5).
Disc 5 is firmly connected to shaft 100, and carries pin 29, about which pawl 28 with roller 28a (FIG. 4), which is acted upon by edge'110 of lever 27.
The device according to the present invention works as follows:
In the course of the winding process, detent 113 is held on lever 27 outside the range of bell crank lever 104, through the intermediary of finger 114, by a stop motion 114a, pivoting about pivot 11412 and checking the presence of yarn 22. During such operation, lever 104 constantly oscillates by reason of the action of cam 101 upon roller 103. In the case of the absence of yarn 22 for any reason, eg due to yarn breakage or exhausting the yarn supply on the cop, the detent 113 is released by said stop motion 114a, thereby engaging the pathof bent lever 104 and being entrained therewith upon backward movement of member 113 in the direcwhereupon connection to cam shaft 111 is achieved through said gearing 31, 31c and, thus the knotting operation is also, performed. Cam 121 which rotates with the cam shaft 111, by way of roller 120, lever 117, fork 118, sliding block 116, lever 27, roller 122, lever 107 and shaft 108 takes over the control of the clutch plate 12 and the brake disc 17 by way of bell crank lever 8 and finger 109 according to the required course of the" knotting operation, instead of bent lever 104. Lever 104 further performs a swinging motion in the direction of arrow T, and releases the small detent 1 13 during the knotting operation.
Lever 117 and cam 121 cause also the termination of the rotary motion of camshaft 111 after one revolu- 7 tion, i.e. after finishing the knotting operation. This is performed in the following manner:
At the end of one revolution of cam shaft 111 in the direction of arrow V, roller 120 engages recess 121a on cam 121 due to the pull of spring 123, which is trans;
mitted to cam 121 by lever 27 and further by means of sliding block 1 16 through fork 1 18 and lever 117 to roller 120 mounted on lever 117. This permits the lever 27 to swing out in the direction of arrow S1 (FIGS. 2 and 4). Thus, pawl 28 is disengaged from shaft 111 by means of said gearing 31, 31c (FIGS. 4 and 5). Detent l 13 is again held outside the range of bent lever 104 by means of finger 1 14 by the stop motion 1 14a. Upon engagement of roller 120 and recess 121a on cam 1211,
the brake disc 17 is released by roller 122 until finger 109 of lever 8 and the clutch plate 12 move in the direction of the arrow 2 (see FIG.3), i.e. clutch plates 12, 13 become engaged, whereupon driving shaft 15 of yarn distributor 16 (FIG. 3) starts rotating, thus continuing the winding process.
During the winding operations the clutch 12, 13 is periodically disengaged into neutral position for short periods which clutch plate 12 (FIG. 3) disengages the drive from the motor. At that moment, however, no action of the brake disc 17 occurs as yet. Only a momen- I tary slippage occurs, and thus also a momentary retardation of the rotary motion'of yarn distributor 16 due to mechanical or frictional resistance. Due to the inertia of the bobbin, it slips upon distributor 16 during the FIG. 3), against spring 1211, along wedge 12a on shaft 7 15. As clutch plate 12 is firmly connected to brake disc 17, said disc movestherewith in the direction of arrow 5, until brake lining 170 contacts the flange, 18a of short peridocal disengagement of the drive. This causes the elimination of pattern winding which often takes place ina known manner on the cross wound bobbin; the constitution of undesirable hard points in the winding is also prevented in this manner.
The device according ,to the invention controls the said short time peridoc disengagement from the drive in the following manner (FIG. 2):
On constantly driven shaft there is mounted the abovementioned cam which is provided on its circumference with small projections 105a. Projections 105a periodically act upon lever 9 (FIG. 3) by way of roller 106, lever 107,shaft 108, lever 8 and its finger, 109, thus causing, in the mannerdescribed above, slippage of the cross wound bobbin (not shown) with respect to the yarn distributor 16, driving said bobbin.
In FIG. 3a, the elements 11, 11a, 12, 12a, 12b, 17, 17a are shown in their shifted position, in which stoppage of the winding drum 16 has been brought about.
As can be seen in such Figure, parts 12 and 17 have been shifted to the left against the forces of spring 12b upon the pressing of the pin 11 by the arm pivotable by the pivot 10, upon the pertinent movement of part 109 on shaft 108. Lining 17a of part 17 then comes into contact with the rim 18a of the brake drum 18. At the same time, lining 13a is out of contact with part 12, and
therefore no rotary motion is transferred atthis time from part 13 via lining 13a to part 12 and 17.
The advantage of the device according to the present invention consists particularly in that said device is of is to be expressly understood that it is in no way limited to the disclosure of such a preferred embodiment, but is capable of numerous modifications within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a winding unit in automatic yarn winding machines for rotating a bobbin to wind a strand thereon from a supply cop, said unit being provided with a rotatable driving means driven through'a clutch, a brake for stopping the driving means of the winding unit, a feeler for detecting the yarn wound upon the bobbin, a knotter drive between the supply cop and the bobbin controlled by said feeler for removing yarn breakage, and driven cams for controlling the clutch of the driving means of the winding unit and the brake for stop-r ping the driving means of the winding unit, the improvement which comprises a control lever acting upon the clutch of the driving means and the brake for disengaging the clutch and engaging the brake, said driven cams including a continuously driven first control cam acting upon said control lever for periodically disengaging said clutch for eliminating pattern winding, a second control cam for driving the knotter driven together with said yarn knotter drive via a singlerevolutionary clutch which is engaged upon yarn breakage, and a continuously driven third control cam for engaging said single-revolution clutch when said yarn feeler detects yarn breakage.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, comprising a shaft upon which the control lever is mounted and to which it is affixed, first, second and third additional levers mounted on saidshaft, the first and third additional levers being freely rotatable with respect to said shaft and to the second lever being affixed thereto, said first, second and third control cams cooperating with respective additional levers, said first lever being entrainable by said second additional lever in the direction of movement thereof to stop the winding unit, said second additional lever being entrainable by said third additional lever for engaging the single-revolution clutch via a coupling element in the direction of movementwhich causes the movement of the control lever in the unit stopping direction.

Claims (2)

1. In a winding unit in automatic yarn winding machines for rotating a bobbin to wind a strand thereon from a supply cop, said unit being provided with a rotatable driving means driven through a clutch, a brake for stopping the driving means of the winding unit, a feeler for detecting the yarn wound upon the bobbin, a knotter drive between the supply cop and the bobbin controlled by said feeler for removing yarn breakage, and driven cams for controlling the clutch of the driving means of the winding unit and the brake for stopping the driving means of the winding unit, the improvement which comprises a control lever acting upon the clutch of the driving means and the brake for disengaging the clutch and engaging the brake, said driven cams including a continuously driven first control cam acting upon said control lever for periodically disengaging said clutch for eliminating pattern winding, a second control cam for driving the knotter driven together with said yarn knotter drive via a single-revolutionary clutch which is engaged upon yarn breakage, and a continuously driven third control cam for engaging said single-revolution clutch when said yarn feeler detects yarn breakage.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, comprising a shaft upon which the control lever is mounted and to which it is affixed, first, second and third additional levers mounted on said shaft, the first and third additional levers being freely rotatable with respect to said shaft and to the second lever being affixed thereto, said first, second and third control cams cooperating with respective additional levers, said first lever being entrainable by said second additional lever in the direction of movement thereof to stop the winding unit, said second additional lever being entrainable by said third additional lever for engaging the single-revolution clutch via a coupling element in the direction of movement which causes the movement of the control lever in the unit stopping direction.
