GONDENSING APPARATUS.

NITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
JOHN URI LLOYD, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
CONDENSING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 390,243, dated October 2, 1888.
Application ,filed November 28, 1887. Serial No. 256,292. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHN URI LLOYD, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Condensing Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of refer ence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved condensing apparatus which shall be of a reduced size with an increased area of cooling-surface, whereby the operation of condensing may be accomplished in the most effective and expeditious manner; and my improvements consist, essentially, ofa condensing'chamber of novel construction having suitable entrance and discharge openings and provided with an inclosing chamber or jacket; also having suitable entrance and discharge openings, a suitable space being provided between the condensing-chamber and its su rrounding jacket in the manner and for the purposes hereinafter fully described and specifically designated in the claim.
In theaccompanying drawing, the figure represents a vertical section of a condensing ap paratus constructed in accordance with my invention.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the condensing'chamber, which is preferably of an inverted cone shape, but which may be made in any other desired form, and provided at its upper portion with the vapor entrance B, and at its lower part with a discharge-pipe, G, for the escape of the condensed liquid.
The interior ofthe condensing-chamber may be perfectly smooth, but is preferably provided with a helically or other suitably arranged ribbon or flange extending from the top of the condensing-chamber to the exit 0.
An inclosing chamber orjacket, D, ofashape preferably corresponding to that of the con denser, surrounds the said condenser in such manner as to leave a space, a, between the two for the circulation of a cold stream of water, which is supplied through the pipe E, project ing into the said space, while the pipe F serves ble receiver.
as an exit for the heated water during the process of condensation.
A suitable pipe, G, having one open end projecting into thespace beneath the condensing-chamber and its opposite open end terminating at the central part of the space above the said chamber, serves to direct the stream of water from the lower space to the upper central part of the condensingchamber in such manner that the water is spread in a thin sheet over the upper surface of the condenser be fore passing out at the exit-pipe, thus subjecting the outside surface of the condensingchamber to a continuous current of cold water, in thin stratum, to carry on the process of condensation, the vapor of the liquid to be treated passing from the distilling or evaporating apparatus into the condenser through the pipe B, and as it condenses in liquid form passes out at the dischargepipe O to a suita- It will thus be readily observed that by means of my improvements I am enabled to provide a condensing apparatus that will 00- cupy but little space with an increased area of the condensing-surface, owing to the helically or other suitably arranged flanges serving to distribute the vapor of the liquid to be treated to a direct contact with a constantly-cooling surface. The device is simple and inexpensive in its construction, with a ready adaptation for the condensation of any liquid.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a condensing apparatus, the cone-shaped chamber A, having double walls the interior whereof is provided with a helically-arranged ribbon or flange and with suitable inlet and outlet pipes,B and O, in combination with an inclosing receptacle or jacket, D, also provided with inlet and outlet pipes E and F and distributiug'pipe G, a space, a, being formed between the said chamber and its inclosing jacket, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN URI LLOYD. n a
