CARTRIDGE-LOADING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,936, dated September 25, 1888;

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Momz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corry, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new-anduseful Improvements in Cartridge-Loading Machi nes; and I do here by declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apro pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
My invention consists in the improvements I 57in cartridge-loading machines hereinafter set forth and explained, and illustrated in the aceompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear view, in elevation, of my improved cartridge-loading machine. Fig. 2

In the construction of my improved cartridge-loading machine shown, A is the pow- Ger-receptacle, B the shot-receptacle, and O the wad-receptacle, of my machine. The receptacles A and B, I make, preferably, of cylin- 0 ders of glass secured between heads a and a and b and b, the upper heads, a and I), having openings therein, provided with screw-caps D and E, and the lower heads, a and b, being made hopper-shaped, with passages d e (the parts being broken away in Fig. 1 to show said passages) therein, adapted to communicate with the rotating powder and shot measures F and G when in proper position there for, as illustrated by the position of the pow- 0 der-mcasureF in Fig. 1, or closed by the circularvalvefansfand g thereon, as illustrated by the position of the shot-1ncasure (i in Fig. 1. These rotating measures F and G, being also adapted to communicate in like manner 5 with and empty their contents into the inclined passages H and I, which open into the vertical tube J, so thatthe powder and shot measures F and G, being alternately filled from the powder and shot receptacles A and B, may be rotated, as hereinafter described,

The rotating measures F and G are each 5 5 provided with axes 7L- andi, mounted in the frame of the machine, and to these axes crankarms j k are secured, which areconnected together by means of a bar, L, secured thereto by pintles l, the crank-arms jik being so secured to the axes h t that the measures F and G will occupy positions relative to each other, as shown in Fig. 1-that is to say, when one is-being filled the other is discharging its contents. 0, pivoted to the frame at O, the arm n of the bcll crank lever N serving as the handle for 0 operating the rotating measures F and G by means of the communications described. On each of the measures Fand G the semicircular plates or valve-facesf and g'rotate in circular valve-seats f and g atthe lower ends of the .75 passages. (Z and,e and serve to close and keep the same closed until the measuresF and G are in proper position to be filled, the circular seats 1' and 9' also serving to prevent the contents of the measures F and G from being spilled until they respectively arrive at the proper positions to discharge their contents into the passages H and I. The measures F and G are also provided with movable bottoms d and e, which are adapted to be adjusted so as to vary the capacity of the measures F. and G, as desired.
To the frame of the machine, in the rear of and between the powder and shot receptacles A and B, I secure the vertical tube 0, which 0 is provided at its upper end with a hopper, 0', adapted to receive and retain a supply of wads for use in operating the machine. On the upper end of the plunger (3 t-he're is a laterally-projccting arm, It, provided on its outer end with a bearingdt, in which the oplever S being pivoted at nto the upright arm 0 and the other end thereof being provided with an operating-handle, S. Through the arm R on the plunger Q, a vertical rod, T, passes, sliding freely through an opening, 1, (shown in dotted lines,) therein, this rod extending from the top of the sliding plate 1 to some distance above the arm R, where it isprovided with a head, T. This rod T, also passes" near its lower end loosely through an' opening, 1, in themachincdranie, and is supported laterally thereby, so that it will slide freely up and down in its supports. In front of the rod '1, where it passes through the opening t in the frame, is an outwardlyextending ear or lug, U, in which is pivoted a bell-crank lever, U, the short arm a of which extends inwardly, where it engages with a notch, u, in the lower end of the vertical rod T, and also with the lower end of the plunger Q, during its downward traverse tothe top of the plate I, and the long arm V thercofcxtends downward and engages with aslot, r, in the front end of the sliding plate-I, so that the movement of the bell-crank lever U actuates the sliding plate 1? forward and back, as hereinafter set forth.
The cartridge-shell holder K'is secured ina clamp, K, pivoted on a trunnion, '1, passing through the frame, so t-hatit can be freely rotit-ted thereon, a stop, 2, extending downward from oneside of the vertical tube J, engaging therewith when brought to a vertical position, as illustrated in Fig. 1.

This anvil K is movable and is supported by a bracket, 3, held in place by an adjustable screw, 4-, by means .vhercot' it can be raised or lowered, asdesired. The central portion of the anvil 1K isprovided wit-h a slot, 5, (shown in dotted lines,) whereby it can be moved for ward and back, the rear end passing under a hook, (l, on the support 3, so that when in place it is firmly supported; but when pulled forward by means of the handle 7 thereof it sothat theholderh',with theloaded cartridg canbe rotated so as to occupy a horizon position between the parts 8 and 9 of the crimper, these parts of the crimper being mounted in bearings 10 and .H in the sides of the frame in such position that the cartridgeholder K when in a horizontal position is in the proper position to 'n-esent the cartridge to the criinper. The erimper is of usual and ordinary construction, the rotating head J b ing operated by turning the crank 12, the was being meanwhile held in place by the plunger 13, the cartridge-howl supportfi being moved forward and back by means of a hand bellerank lever, 15, an arm, '16, of which operates in a slot in the outcrend of the support 8, and the other arm being provided with a handle, l7, for opcratingthesame. The lower part of the frame is provided with screw-clamping mechanism '18 and 1.9, by means whereof the machine may be secured in an uprightposition to a counter, table, or other suitable support.
In operation a cartridge-shell is placed in the cartridge-holder K and the anvilK raised through the passage II and tubeJ. The operator then raises the haudleS which raises the plunger Q, and the rod T, which operates the bell-crank lever U,- and slides the'plate I back until the slot 1) is directly under the lower end of the wad-tn be 0, when a wad drops by gravity therein. At this time the end of the arm a of the bellcrank glevcr U is under the lower end of the plunger Q. The lever B is then moved downward, when the lower end of the plunger in its downward traverse operates on the arm a of the bell-crank lever U to draw the plate 1 forward, so that when the lower end of the plunger Q, has reached the plate L) the slot 1), with a wad therein, is directly in line with the lowerend of the plunger Q, which in its continued downward traverse forces the wad down through the tube .T into the shell below. The movenn-Int oft-he handle S being then reversed, the plunger is withdrawn and the plate 'P again forced back. The operator then reverses the movement of the handle a, which returns the measure F to the position to be filled, while at the same time it discharges the shot-measure (2 through the passage I and tube .l' into the shell, and a downward nuivcment of the handle l drives another wad into the shell on thetopof the shot, as hcreinbefore described, thereby completing the loading of the shell. The combination, in, a cartridge-loading machine, of a vertical wad-tube located in the rear ofthe plunger and adapted to operate as a wad-supply magazine, and a horizontallysliding plate having an oblong slot therein moving back and forth under the lower end of the wad tube and plunger, with a bell-crank 5o lever pivoted in the machine-frame, so that one arm thereof engages with the end of said sliding plate and the other with the lower end of the plunger, and with a vertically-moving rod thereon, whereby the said plate is moved back and forth by the positive action of the parts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. The combination, in a cartridge-loading machine, of an upright loading-tube and shell- 50 holder and a sliding plate for conveying wads from a wad-holding tube to and ove'rtheloading-tube, with belLcrank-lever mechanism pivoted to the frame and engaging with the end of said plate and withthe lower end of the plunger for moving the plate forward, and a vertical rod operated by the plunger and engaging with said bell-crank lever for moving the plate back, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
6. The combination, in a cartridge-loading machine, of a powder-receptacle and shot-rcccptacle, and measuring mechanism rotating on horizontal axes connecting said receptacles with an upright tube, with a rotating shellholder under said tube, a movable anvil under said shell-holder, and crimping mechanism in the line of rotation of said cartridge-shell holder, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7.. The combination, in a cartridge-loading machine, of powder and shot receptaclesand a wad-receptacle, valve-measures rotating on 2. The combination, in acartridge-loading machine, of'the powder and shot measures F and G, having adjustable bottoms d and e thereimand circular valve-facesf and gthereon, adapted to fit in the circular valve-seats f and g, openings d and e in the powder and shot receptacles for filling said measures, and pipes H and I, through which said measures may be emptied, with cranks j and k on said valves, and a connecting-rod, L, so connecting said cranks j and k that said measures may be simultaneously rotated, so as to alternately fill one measure while the other is being discharged, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
