PIPE-WRENCH.-
SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,899, dated September 25, 1888.
Application filed September}, 1887. Serial No. 249,108. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL R. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of pipe wrenches that are provided with a sliding jaw; and it consists in certain details of construction, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a pipe-wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the center of the wrench. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on line as w of Fig. 2.
Arepresents a shank, provided at its outer end with a fixed jaw, B, and at its other end provided with a handle, 0.
D is a movable jaw, provided with an extension, D, the end of which is turned up to form a pawl, d, that fits into the ratchet-teeth a, cut on the under side of the shank A. The movable jaw D is connected to the shank A by means of a U or saddle shaped piece shown as comprising two loops, E F, each of which is rigidly secured to the movable jaw by rivets e g. The jaw D is provided near its fore end with a recess, G, in which a spring, H, is placed so that one end will bear against the under side of the shank A. The loop F is provided on its upper end with a projection,
05 f, in which a recess, I, is formed, and a spring, J, is placed therein, so as to bear upon the top of the shank A, as shown, so that by depressing the projection f the pawl d is thrown out of contact with the teeth a, and is free to be moved forward or drawn back, the spring J sliding on the top of the shank A, while the spring H slides on the under side of the shank.
Vhen using the wrench, the projection f is depressed and the jaw D drawn back. The jaws are then passed over the pipe and the jaw D pushed forward by pressing on the projection f until both jaws are in contact with the pipe, the spring J allowing the pawl d to ride over the teeth a. When the jaws are thus adjusted and the wrench turned in the proper direction, the tendency will be to force the jaw D toward the shank A, thereby firmly gripping the pipe, the spring H allowing the jaw D to be thus pressed inward, while the pawl d acts as a fulcrum, as well as preventing the jaw being forced backward. When it is desired to release the hold upon the pipe, all that has to be done is to turn the wrench in the opposite direction, and the expansive action of the spring H throws the oscillating jaw D outward, the teeth on the face of the jaw D being cut in reverse direction to those in the jaw B, so that they will grip only when the wrench is turned one way.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination of a wrenchshank provided with ratchet-teeth on its inner side, a jaw fixed on said shank and having inwardlyinclined serrations, a sliding jaw having outwardly-inclined serrations, and provided with an elongated rearward extension having a pawl at its inner end for engaging the teeth on the shank, a saddle embracing said shank and fixed to said movable jaw near its opposite ends, said saddle being considerably larger than said shank, whereby the sliding jaw has lateral play thereon, a spring interposed between the outer end of the sliding jaw and theinner side of said shank, and a spring interposed between the inner end of the saddle and the outer side of said shank opposite the inner end of the slidingjaw, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a wrench-shank provided with ratchet-teeth on its under side, a jaw fixed on said shank and having inwardly inclined serrations, a sliding jaw having outwardly-inclined serrations and provided with an elongated rearward extension having a pawl at its inner end for engaging the teeth on the shank, loops or saddles embracingsaid shank and fixed to said movable jaw near its opposite ends, said loops being considerably larger than said shank, whereby the sliding 5 IOO 111,11 socket on the upper side of the inner In testimony whereofI have signed inyname 100p, and a spring in said socket and bearing to this specification in the presence of two snbon the upper side of said shank for drawing scribing Witnesses.
the inner end of the rearward extension of the DANIEL PORTEI. 5 sliding jaw toward the shank to cause the Witnesses:
pawl to engage the teeth thereof, substantially L. XV. HOW
as described. E. PLANTA.
