SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,874, dated September 25, 1888.
Application filed March 10, 1888. Serial No. 266521. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES M. CRANDELL and ORLANDO A. GRANDELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Nelson,in the county of N uckolls and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ohnrns, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in churns and the operative mechanism therefor; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of the mechanism embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a view of the dasher end of the said mechanism. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same, showing the sprocket-wheels and chain. Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the main frame of the mechanism'resting on the base-board at, having feet atits corners provided with casters, so that the machine can be readily moved.

F is an oscillating shaft journaled in bearings f, secured to the standards a a proper distance above the shaft 0, and having on its end, extended beyond the bearing, the crank arm G, the bifurcated free end of which is connected by the link-rod g with the wrist-pin e on the crank-arm E.
H is a double-armed vertical lever secured at its center upon the center of the shaft F, so that the oscillation of said shaft vibrates the said lever. The upper arm, h, and lower arm, h, of said lever are provided with eyes h If, in which the looped ends of the straps I 1 are respectively engaged. The strap I passes over a roller or pulley, 2', depending from the upper block, a, and the strap 1 passes below a similar roller or pulley, i, standing upward J is a sleeve on the dasher-rod B, which sleeve is rendered adjustable by the set-screw j,passing through a tapped opening in the side of the sleeve and impinging on the dasher-rod.
j j are eyes at opposite sides of the sleeve, respectively connected to the adjacent looped ends of the straps I I.
It is evident that when the shaft 0 is re tated by means of the crank-handle c the shaft' d and crank-arm E will also be rotated, and the crank-arm G, which is longer than the arm E, will be vibrated, oscillating the doublearmed lever H. will, by means of the straps I 1, cause the dasher-rod to reciprocate. The dasher-rod can be set the proper height by means of the adjustable sleeve and its set-screw.
J J are bracerods having their ends bent and hooked into openings in the base-board a, and lower blocks, a", to hold the upper section of the frame down steadily when the churn is in place. They also support the upper section in place.
The oscillation of the lever By the described mechanism the dasher is caused to reciprocate with great force and the power is economically used.
The dashcr-rod can be readily attached to and detached from the wire spring-elasps.
Having described our inventiomwe claim 1. The combination, with the main frame composed of the base-board (a, the sectioned hinged standards a, the uprights a", the rails joining said standards and uprights,the blocks a, and the brace-rods J, having their ends bent and insertcdin openingsin the baseboard a, and lower block, a", so that they support and stay said block and hold the upper sec-' tion of the frame down steadily, of the anti friction rollers having concave peripheries attached to said blocks, the wire-spring guide catches secured to the blocks a, the recipro eating dasher, and the mechanism whereby said dasheris operated, substantially as specified. I
2. The combination, with the main frame and the dasherrod attached thereto by springcatches, of the double-armed lever secured to a shaftjournalcd on the main frame, thestraps connected to the ends of the arms of said lever, the adjustable sleeve on the dasher-rod having the adjacent ends of said straps secured to it, and the mechanism, substantially as described, whereby said lever is actuated, sub stantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the main frame and the dashenrod attached thereto by springcatches, of the shaft F, journaled on the main frame, the double-armed lever H, secured to said shaft', the adjustable sleeve J, the straps I I, the shafts c and d, the crank-arms'E and G, the link-rod g, the sprocket-wheels O and D, the chain (1 and the crank-handle c, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
