Description

Patented June 23. 1863.
TEES. pmwmm n me Washington D. a
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BARNEY H. MENKE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN TEA-KETTLES.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,972, dated June 23, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be known that I, BARNEY H. MENKE, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have in- "ented a new and useful Improvementin Tea- Kettles; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to the class of cast iron vessels whose lid is adapted to swing horizontally around one of the bail-ears, and is secured by the insertion of the bail; and the object of my present improvement is such a construction of the parts as shall enable them to be formed complete in the acts of molding and casting without the necessity of filing, screw-cutting, or any other so-called finishing work whatever.
Figure 1 represents the parts of m improvement detached. Fig. 2 is an axial section of the parts in position.
A is the upper part of the kettle-body. B is the lid, having a lug, C, pierced with a circular aperture or eye, 0. D D are the bailears, pierced, d, in the usual manner to receive the ends of the bail E. F is a thimble, havin g the form exteriorly of a short cylinder, Whose depth and diameter correspond to those of the eye 0, and whose upper edge is provided with a rim or flange,f. The thimble F is slotted to fit snugly over the bail-ear D.
Construction This kettle may consist of but four pieces, of which the bail is of wrought or malleable iron, while the kettle body, the lid, and the thimble are simple castings of easy manufacture, and complete as they come from the sand. A thimble, taken indifferentl y from the heap, being inserted in the lid the two pieces are slipped together over the ear D, and being secured by the insertion of the hail, the kettle is ready for use.
Operation: The kettle is openedby swinging the lid horizontally to the right or left. The cylindrical sides of the thimble form a suitable pivot, on which the lid freely swings, while the rim or flange fretains the lid upon the kettle.
All the four pieces which compose this kettle may be packed or disposed of separately, for sale or removal, and can be put together in a few seconds by any one.
I claim As an improved manufacture of bailed and covered hollow ware, the provision of the thimble F f f adapted to fit over the bail-ear and to confine the lid while permittingits free horizontal vibration, the whole being secured by the insertion of the bail, in the manner set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
' B. H. MENKE.
