IMPROVEMENT IN PRESSES FOR BALING.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 28,963, dated June 23, 1863,
To all whom/ it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN K. HARRIS, of Allenville, in the county of Switzerland and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Presses for Baling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichv Figure l is a side view of my invention, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line x x, Fig. l.

This invention relates to an improvement I in that class of baling-presses in which the press-box is filled by a beating operation of the plunger or follower preparatory to the pressing operation of the latter.
The invention consists in the means employed for operating the plunger or follower so that it may be elevated to the desired height, and then released, so as to fall and give the desired blow, and then be elevated, all by a continuous movement of the driving-shaft.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents an upright press-box, which rests on a proper base. B and C is the follower or plunger, which works in said box. In the upper part of the framing of the pressbox thereis inserted apulley, D, around which a rope or chain, E, passes, one end of the latter being attached to the follower or plunger, and the other passing down and underneath a pulley, A, in the base B.
F represents a bevel-toothed wheel, which is attached to a collar or hub, b, on a shaft, G, in the base B, and on the collar or hub b there is placed a loose band, G', to which the rope or .chain E is attached. The wheel F is toothed at its under side, and a pinion, F,
gears into it, as shown clearly in Fig. ll. On the upper surface of the wheel F there is an annular ledge, H, which does not quite extend around the wheel F. This ledge H is near the or chain E, (see more particularly Fig. 2,)
and the follower or plungerY C will be elevated, as indicated by arrow 2, and as the low end, d, of the ledge comes in contact with the y rope or chain said end el will pass under the latter and throw the rope or chain o from the ledge, so that the follower or plunger will descend by its own gravity, the fol-lower or plunger being again raised where the high end, c, ofthe ledge H comes in contact with the rope or chain E. Thus by a continuous rotation of the wheel F a rising-and-falling movement is communicated to the follower or plunger c, and the hay or other article to be pressed and baled may be firmly compacted in the pressbox previous tothe pressing operation. This latter process may be performed by a screw or any suitable mechanical device applied to the follower or plunger, or to the bed ctx underneath it.
It will be understood that when the rope or chain is thrown off from the ledge H the ring or band G will turn freely on-the collar or hub b, and the rope or chain cannot, therefore, be wound up on the collar or hub, as would be the case were it rigidly attached to it.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is-v The wheel F, provided with the ledge HM the rope or chain E, and follower or plunger O, all arranged and combined to operate as and for the purpose herein set forth.
