Abstract
A flush door pull and dead bolt assembly adapted to fit within a rectangular cavity formed in the edge of a door, the cavity communicating with the interior face of the door through a port. The assembly includes a cover plate which lies against the front wall of the cavity, the cover plate having an open window surrounded by a projecting flange which is accommodated within the port. Also included is a back plate which lies against the rear wall of the cavity, and a generally rectangular frame member which is received within the cavity between the cover plate and the back plate. The frame member is defined by a U-shaped strap whose legs are bridged by an edge plate, the ends of which lie against the edge of the door and are provided with holes to receive fastening screws. Mounted below the upper leg of the strap is an open-ended bolt carrier one end of which registers with a bolt opening in the edge plate. Slidable within the bolt carrier is a bolt, the inner end terminating in a pull finger accessible through the window. When pushed by the finger, the bolt projects through the bolt opening and passes into a socket embedded in the door jamb and when pulled by the finger, the bolt is retracted to unlock the door.

Moore [5 7] ABSTRACT A flush door pull and dead bolt assembly adapted to fit within a rectangular cavity formed in the edge of a door, the cavity communicating with the interior face of the door through a port. The assembly includes a cover plate which lies against the front wall of the cavity, the cover plate having an open window surrounded by a projecting flange which is accommo-- dated within the port. Also included is a back plate which lies against the rear wall of the cavity, and a generally rectangular frame member which is received within the cavity between the cover plate and the back plate. The frame member is defined by a U-shaped strap whose legs are bridged by an edge plate, the ends of which lie against the edge of the door and are provided with holes to receive fastening screws.
Mounted below the upper leg of the strap is an openended bolt carrier one end of which registers with a bolt opening in the edge plate. Slidable within the bolt 'carrier is a bolt, the inner end terminating in a pull finger accessible through the window. When pushed by the finger, the bolt projects through the bolt opening and passes into a socket embedded in the door jamb and when pulled by the finger, the bolt is retracted to unlock the door.
7 Claims, 4 Drawing Figures FLUSH DOOR PULL AND DEAD BOLT ASSEMBLY BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION This invention relates generally to door bolts, and more particularly to a flush door pull and dead bolt assembly.
The typical door is provided with a door lock having a retractable bolt whose action is controlled by a key insertable in a key hole mounted on the exterior face of the door. Since access to the door lock is from the outside, it does not afford adequate security to an occupant of the room, for no door lock, however complex, is tamper-proof. It is for this reason that many doors have interior locks in the form of a dead bolt.
The conventional dead bolt is constituted by a guide plate attached to the face of the door adjacent the edge thereof and a bar slidable in the guide which is received in a socket attached to the door jamb. When the bolt is locked the door cannot be opened from the outside.
The conventional dead bolt has several objectionable features. Because the guide plate and the socket are screwed to the interior surface of the door and jamb, these elements are unsightly and are incompatible with the present trend toward flush doors free of protuberances. Moreover screws do not always provide an adequate anchor for the elements of the bolt, and it is sometimes possible to dislodge the bolt by pushing vigorously against the door from the outside. And because the bolt is exposed, when the door is painted the paint which also coats the bolt tends to interfere with its proper operation.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION In view of the foregoing, it is an object of this invention to provide a flush door pull and dead bolt assembly whose operating elements are embedded in a door and jamb structure, the assembly being free of projections and offering a high order of security.
More particularly it is an object of this invention to provide an assembly of the above type which may be readily installed with a minimum of fastening elements.
Also an object of the invention is to provide an assembly of the above-type which is of simple design, which is highly attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.
Briefly stated, these objects are attained in an assembly adapted to fit within a rectangular cavity formed in the edge of the door, the cavity communicating with the interior face of the door through a port. The assembly includes a cover plate and a rear plate which lie against the front and rear walls, respectively, of the cavity, the cover plate having a window surrounded by a projecting flange which is accommodated within the port and forms a lining therefor. Received within the cavity between the cover and back plates is a generally rectangular frame member defined by a U-shaped strap whose legs are bridged by an edge plate, the ends of which lie against the edge of the door and are provided with holes to receive fastening screws.
Mounted below the upper leg of the strap is an openended bolt carrier one end of which registers with a bolt opening in the edge plate. Slidable within the bolt carrier is a bolt whose inner end is shaped to form a pull finger that is accessible through the window. When pushed by the finger, the bolt projects through the bolt opening and passes into a socket embedded in the door jamb to lock the door, and when pulled by the finger, the bolt is withdrawn from the socket to free the door.

DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION Referring now to the figures. there is shown a flush door pull and dead bolt assembly adapted to fit within a box-shaped cavity 10 formed in a hinged door 11. Door 11 is provided with an interior face 11A, an exterior face 118 and an edge 11C which abuts a door jamb 12 when the door is closed. Cavity l0 communicates with the interior face 11A of the door through a generally rectangular port 10A.
The assembly includes a rectangular cover plate 13 which lies against the front wall of cavity 10, the cover plate having a window therein which registers with the port and is surrounded by a projecting flange 14 that is received within the port to form a lining therefor. Also included in the assembly is a back plate 15 which lies against the rear wall of cavity 10.
Received within cavity 10 between cover plate 13 and rear plate 15 is a frame member which is defined by a U-shaped strap 16 whose horizontal legs 16A and 16B lie against the upper and lower walls of cavity 10 and whose vertical leg 16C lies against the end wall of the cavity. Thus the frame which is sandwiched between the plates holds the plates in place within the cavity. The ends of horizontal legs 16A and 16B are bridged by an edge plate 17 which lies against thc edge 11C of the door. Holes 17a andzl7b adjacent the upper and lower ends of the end plate receive mounting screws 19 and 20 serving to secure the assembly to the door.
Attached to the underside of upper leg 16A of the frame is a dead bolt sub-assembly constituted by a hollow carrier 21 having a rectangular cross section and a bolt 22 which is slidable within'the carrier. The forward end 23 of bolt 22 has a circular cross section and projects througn an opening 24 in edge plate 17. The bolt is manipulated by a downwardly projecting finger 25 at the inner end thereof, the retraction of the bolt being limited by a stop pin 26. The forward end 23 of the bolt passes into a socket 27 embedded in the door jamb 12.
Thus all that is required to install the assembly is to insert the cover plate, the rear plate and the frame member within cavity 10, the assembly being held in place simply by inserting screws 19 and 20 into the edge of the door. The socket 27 is installed merely by drilling a hole in the door jamb and inserting the socket thereon. A screw 28 is used to hold the socket in place.
As is evident from FIG. 1, the assembly is flush with the door, there being no projecting elements. Access to 3 J the dead bolt is had through the lined window A. To open the door, one merely pullsfinger 25 to slide the bolt out of its jamb socket and to close the door one pushes the finger to slide the bolt into the socket.
While there has been shown a preferred embodiment of the invention it will be appreciated that many changes and modifications may be made without, however, departing from the essential spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. A flush door pull and dead bolt assembly installed in a door whose edge has a box-like cavity formed therein having upper, lower, front, read and end walls, said cavity communicating with the interior face of the door through a port cut in said front wall, the door being swingable with respect to a door jamb having a socket formed therein, the edge of the door, when closed, lying against said door jamb, said assembly comprising:
A. a rectangular cover plate dimensioned to lie against the front wall of the cavity, said plate having a window therein which registers with said port,
B, a back plate dimensioned to lie against the rear wall of the cavity,
C. a rectangular frame member interposed between said plates and defined by a U-shaped strap whose horizontal legs lie against the upper and lower walls of the cavity and whose vertical leg lies against the end wall of the cavity, the ends of the horizontal legs being bridged by an edge plate which lies against the edge of the door, and I D. a bolt sub-assembly constituted by a carrier secured to the underside of the upper horizontal leg of the frame member and a bolt slideable therein, said bolt projecting through an opening in the edge plate into said socket formed in the door jamb.
2. An assembly as set forth in claim 1, wherein said cover plate is provided with a projecting flange surrounding said window and accommodated within said port to provide a lining therefor.
3. An assembly as set forth in claim 1, wherein said bolt is provided at one end with a dependent finger which is accessible through said window.
4. An assembly as set forth in claim 1, wherein said socket is formed by a barrel received in a hole in the door jamb.
5. An assembly as set forth in claim 1, wherein said edge plate is provided at either end with holes to receive mounting screws.
6. An assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said carrier has a rectangular cross section.
7. An assembly as set forth in claim 1, further including a stop pin depending from the upper leg of the frame to limit bolt movement.
Claims (7)
1. A flush door pull and dead bolt assembly installed in a door whose edge has a box-like cavity formed therein having upper, lower, front, read and end walls, said cavity communicating with the interior face of the door through a port cut in said front wall, the door being swingable with respect to a door jamb having a socket formed therein, the edge of the door, when closed, lying against said door jamb, said assembly comprising: A. a rectangular cover plate dimensioned to lie against the front wall of the cavity, said plate having a window therein which registers with said port, B. a back plate dimensioned to lie against the rear wall of the cavity, C. a rectangular frame member interposed between said plates and defined by a U-shaped strap whose horizontal legs lie against the upper and lower walls of the cavity and whose vertical leg lies against the end wall of the cavity, the ends of the horizontal legs being bridged by an edge plate which lies against the edge of the door, and D. a bolt sub-assembly constituted by a carrier secured to the underside of the upper horizontal leg of the frame member and a bolt slideable therein, said bolt projecting through an opening in the edge plate into said socket formed in the door jamb.
2. An assembly as set forth in claim 1, wherein said cover plate is provided with a projecting flange surrounding said window and accommodated within said port to provide a lining therefor.
3. An assembly as set forth in claim 1, wherein said bolt is provided at one end with a dependent finger which is accessible through said window.
4. An assembly as set forth in claim 1, wherein said socket is formed by a barrel received in a hole in the door jamb.
5. An assembly as set forth in claim 1, wherein said edge plate is provided at either end with holes to receive mounting screws.
6. An assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said carrier has a rectangular cross section.
7. An assembly as set forth in claim 1, further including a stop pin depending from the upper leg of the frame to limit bolt movement.
