UNTT ED STATES PATENT Fries,
COMBINED SAND-BAND AND WHEEL-RETAINER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,319, dated September 11, 1888.
Serial No. 263,446. (No mndelil T 0 all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN E. PEEBL'ES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Martinsburg, in the county of Lewis and State of New York, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Combined Sand-Bands and \Vheel-Retainers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in vehicles; and it has for its object to provide an attachment for vehicles which, while serving to effectually prevent sand or other foreign substances from entering the interior of the wheel-hub, will at the same time serve to retain the wheel in position upon the axle in case the nut at the end of the axle should at any time become detached.
To these ends, and to such others as the in vention may relate, the same consists in the peculiar combinations and in the novel construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then specifically defined in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure I is a perspective view illustrating my improvement, the parts being shown detached, but in their relative positions. Fig. 2is a vertical central section with the parts in place.
Referring now to the details of the drawings, A represents a vehicle-hub, which may be of any approved construction.
B designates a box, preferably of cast metal and formed with an internal spiral web or flange, a, which begins and terminates within said box. This box is designed to be secured in the end of the hub, and may be either permanently secured therein or made removable, as desired. In order to prevent the box from at any time becoming loose or turning within the hub, I provide the same with the prongs or lugs b, as shown in Fig. 1.
Secured to the end of the axle by means of the clip a or otherwise is the arm 0, carrying at its end the guard D, of thin metal. This guard is in the form of an arc of a circle, having a diameter slightly less than the diameter of the interior of the box. I Vhen a wooden strip is used above the axle proper, as is common, the arm will be confined between the axle and the strip by means of a clip passed around and embracing said strip, axle, and arm, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
In practice the wheel is placed upon the axle with the guard within the box. The wheel is then pressed against the guard and turned backward, and the guard is thus caused to enter and follow the screw-threaded passage-way formed by the web. When the wheel is in place, the nutis put upon the end ofthe axle and the guard is retained in place by the web and cannot be removed until the nutis removed from the axle and the wheel is pressed inwardly and at the same time turned in the opposite direction, when the guard will reenter and traverse the screw-threaded passage within the box.
It will be readily seen that should the nut become loose or be lost it will be impossible for the wheel to come off, as it must first be pressed inwardly and turned backward before the guard can be removed from the box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. .A. combined wheel-retainer and sandband comprising a box in the hub having a spiral web and an arm on the axle carrying a guard adapted to work within said box, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the hub and axle, of the box secured in said hub and formed with internal spiral web, and the arm secured to the axle and formed with an arc-shaped guard adapted to fit within said box and engage said spiral web, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANKLIN E. PEEBLES. iVitnesses:
