Be it known that I, MYRON J. FERREN, of Stoneham. in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button B )ots, of which the following is aspecification.

This invention has for its object to simplify and cheapen the construction of button-boots; and it consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figures 1, 2, and 3 represent the parts composing the upper of my improved boot. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view, and Fig. 5 a side elevation, of the completed boot. Fig. 6 represents a section on line 00 a", Fig. 4..

The same letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the figures.

In the drawings I show the upper of a but ton-boot made in three piccesviz., first, the larger piece, a, (shown in Fig. 1,) comprising the vamp 1, the high outside quarter 2, and the lower section, 3, of the inside quarter; secondly, the upper section, b, of the inside quarter, and, thirdly, the button-hole piece a. A cut is made in the piece a, as shown in Fig. 1, said out being curved and forming the front edge, cf, of the outside quarter and the upper edge of the lower section of the inside quarter. The lower edge of the piece I) is stitched to the upper edge of the lower section, 3, to complete the inside quarter. and when this is done the front opening, 0, Figs. 4- and 6, of the upper has the continuous edge effor one of its sides, and the partf h of said cut and the front edge of the piece bfor its other side, said opening extending from the top of the leg to the pointf, which corresponds in position to the upper edge of the vamp.

A lace-boot has been made of the two pieces, a I), cut as here shown, excepting in the particular hereinafter specified, eyelets being inserted near the said edges of the front open ing, which in said lace-boot is made exactly at the center of the upper.

In carrying out my invention I make the cut which forms the central opening farther toward the outside quarter than in said laceboot, the lower portion of said out being at one side of the central line of the upper indicated by the dotted line r r, as shown in Fig. 1. I also make the piece I) with a correspond ing fullness, or wider than the corresponding portion of the outside quarter, so that in the completed upper the front opening, 0, instead of being at the exact center will be slightly at one side, one edge of the opening overlapping the center, while the other edge is correspondingly set back. To said overlapping edge I stitch one edge of the button-hole piece 0, the extent of the overlapping of said edge being sufficient to locate the scam of the buttonpiece at the center of the upper, said seam extending from the center of the vamp upwardly over the center of the instep. The lower end of the button-hole piece is extended below the lower end of the front opening, 0, and is secured to the upper below said opening by stitches s 8, extending crosswise of the opening 0, the end of the button hole piece being preferably scarfed and turned under to give it an extra thickness and neat finish at this point. In this manner I prevent the material from tearing at the lower end of the front opening, so that said opening cannot be elongated by tearing, as it could in the lace-boot above referred to.

It will be seen that by my improvements I am enabled to make a button-boot one side and the forward portion of the upper of which are seamless, so that the labor and cost of manufacture are greatly reduced as compared with other button-boots, while the decrease in the number of seams correspondingly increases the durability of the upper. The button-hole piece, besides servingits purpose as a covering for the front opening, also serves as a stay or protector for the lower end of said opening, as above stated.

I claim A button-boot the upper of which is composed of, first, the piece a, comprising the outside quarter, the vamp, and the lower section of the inside quarter, and having the cut ef, which at its lower portion is at one side of the center of the upper; secondly, the piece b,constituting the upper section of the inside quarter and made wider than the corresponding Intestimony whereof I have signed my name portion of the outside quarter, so that the edge to this specification,in the presence of two subof the front opening, formed by the front edge scribing witnesses, this 21st day of February, of the piece I) and the lower portion of the out A.
