SPROCKET-BELT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,173, dated September 4, 1888.
Application filed December 1!), 1887. Serial No. 258,304.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN B. S'r. Louis, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprocket-Belts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in metallic belts for transmitting power through suitable sprocket-wheels to the shafts of any machinery, and particularly adapted for elevators,conveyers, and saw-mill machinery,and to classes of machinery where a link belt can be used.
My invention consists, generally, in the construction and arrangement hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is aside elevation of my improved belt connecting two sprocket-wheels. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Figs. 8 and 1 are details.
In the drawings, 2 represents a sprocketwheel mounted upon a shaft, 4, which may represent the driving-shaft. A similar sprocket, 6, is placed and in line with this wheel, and is also mounted upon a suitable shaft, 8, which represents the shaft to which power is applied. The sprockets 2 and 6 are formed with recesses 10 in their outer circumference at given intervals. The face of the wheels may be constructed with flanges 12 upon each side, to guide the belt and keep its proper position upon the said wheels.
14 is a metallic band or belt, preferably of steel, which passes over the sprockets 2 and 6 between the flanges 12. This band is provided with the bars 16, secured to and running cross wise of the said band at intervals corresponding in length to the recesses upon the sprockets. The bars or crosspieces 16 are preferably made of two pieces of metal half-round in (No model.)
cross-section, one piece being placed above and the other below the band, and the two riveted together, clamping the hand between them. The band is preferably provided with substantially half-round recesses in its opposite edges, and the rivets 18 are preferably inserted through these recesses, as shown in Fig. 3, for the purpose of holding the cross-pieces in place and preventing cutting away the band for the full diameter of the rivets, though the bars may be secured to the band in any other preferred manner.
It will be understood that when this device is used as an elevator-belt that elevator-buck ets may be attached to it in the usual way of securing such buckets to elevator-belts, and when it is used for other purposes any other suitable devices or attachments may be applied to it.
I claim as my invcntion- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, the sprocketbelt herein described, comprising the flat metallic band, metal bars arranged opposite each other upon opposite sides of said band, and rivets extending through said bars and engaging said band, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the sprocket-belt herein described, comprising the metallic band 14, provided with recesses in its opposite edges, the halfround bars 16,arrangcd upon opposite sides of said band, and therivets 18, passing through said recesses and securing said bars upon the opposite sides of said JOHN B. ST.- LOUIS.
