SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,031, dated September 4, 1888.

Be it known that I, HIRAM J. VELLS, of Nashville, Davidson county, State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to improvements in pumps, having for its object to purify and remove extraneous substances from the water as it is being pumped for use, and the invention consists of certain combinations of parts, including their construction, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a sectional elevation ot' my pump, showing it as applied for use. Fig. 2 is an inverted view of the cover removed from the pump-cylinder, and Fig. Sis a horizontal section through the same in its normal position.
In the embodiment of my invention I employ a chamber or cylinder, A, about cen` trally from the bottom of which depends a short semi-cylindric tube, cnwith its lower or bottoni end closed, while in its straight side is arranged an outwardly opening air-valve, a', normaliyheld closed by alight or weak spring, a?, fastened at one end to said tube and bear ing at its free end upon said valve. In theupper end of the chamber or cylinder A is set or placed a cover, B, which consists of a top plate, Z), and a bottom, BX, secured to a cylindrie outer and inner wall, b2b. The top plate, b, projects beyond the outer wall, bthus serving as a fiange to rest upon the upper edge of the cylinder A and support the cover in position. The inner wall, b3, forms a tubular or cylindric passage, b, through the cover,which passage at its lower or inner end communi Cates with the interior of the cylinder A,while into the upper or outer end of the said passage is inserted the lower end of a tube or cylinder, b5, forming a continuation of said passage, which serves as the outlet or discharge for the water from the cylinder A.
The bottom Byof the cover B consists of a plate, b, which rests against the lower edge of the inner wall or tubular passage b", and has an aperture or orifice correspondingwith said passage, and is provided at its outer edge with a downwardlyprojecting annular flange, Z1.
The lower edge ofthe flange if itself is formed or provided with a horizontal outwardly-extending dange or plate, bs, which is connected or united at its outer edge with theloweredgc of the outer wall, b, ofthe cover. y reason of this form of connection of the bottom plate, b, with the cover B the said plate is preferably disposed a short distance inwardly from the lower edge of the cover, while the bottoni edge of the outer wall of the cover is broadened. rlhe lower end ofthe tube or passage b* opens through a coincident aperture or orifice, c, in the bottoni plate, b, and across this oritice is disposed a support, c', which is secured at its ends to said bottom plate. d is a valve which is centrally connected at opposite points near its outer edge to the support c', and is thus adapted to have two leaves which close the lower end of the passage or tube 7)* and open upwardly into the latter.
Through the cover B also passes another tube, B, preferably of a coincident curva-ture with the cylindric side walls of the cover and project-ing through and a short distance above the top plate, b, which projecting end is cov ered with a foraminated plate, forming a filter, B2. The lower end of the tube B'. opens through a coincident orifice or aperture in the bottom plate, Z1, which orifice or aperture is covered by a valve, c, secured at its ends to the said plate and at its one edge at the middle to the supporte and opening downwardly. A spring, e', secured to said support at one end, presses at its opposite end upon and normally holds said valve closed.
(l is a plunger-tube, which passes through an orilice in the center of the support c', and is connected at its upper end to the usual han dle, D, supported upon an arm or bracket projecting from the pump-stock. In the upper portion of the plunger-tube C is a series of air inlets or perforations, ff, while to the lower end of said tube is applied the plunger or diaphragm G, as is also a valve, g, covering the said end of the tube and opening downward against the action of a spring, g', one end of which is connected to said plunger or diaphragm and presses upon said valve. In practice the cylinder A is connected to the lower end of a pump within the well or cistern by fitting the upper end of the tube h5 thereon.
In operation, watelhaving been admitted by a previous downward stroke of the plun ger in a filtered state th rough the filter B past the valve c into the cylinder A, it will be seen that upon the upward stroke of the plunger air is admitted through the apertures ff into the plunger-tube C, after which it leaves said plunger-tube past the valve g and enters the cylinder A, filling the chamber below the plunger, where it remains until the plunger makes its return-stroke. Simultaneous with the upward movement or stroke of the piston the water previously admitted, as slated, to the cylinder A above the plunger C is carried or forced up into the tube b5 past the valve d, from which it is discharged in the usual way. Now, upon the return or downward stroke of the plunger, the confined air in the chamber below the plunger will be forced or driven out of the cylinder A past the valve a into the cistern or well, and into contact with the wa ter therein, having the effect to agitate and purify it, driving olif gases.
It will be seen that this invention is applicable to any pump, and embodies the feature of forcing airinto the water in order to purify it during the pumping operation,while it also furnishes a filter to remove sediment or extraneous substances.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In a pump, the combination, with the cylinder provided with an air-valved outlet at its outlet and at its upper end with a cover havinga central valved passage and a filter at one side of said passage, of a tube or cylinder applied to the said cover and adapted for connection to a pump-barrel, and the plunger havingatube adapted for connection to the pumphandle, and provided in its upper end with a series of air-inlets and with an air-valved outlet atits lower end, substantially as set forth.V
