UNITED STATES PATENT Trice.
THOMAS M. REES, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
RE-ENFORCING THE. HULLS OF VESSELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 388,917, dated September 4:, 1888.
Application filed October 21, 1587. Serial No. 253,041.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that f, THOMAS M. Recs, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Constructing the Hulls of Vessels; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exactdescrip tion thereof.
My invention relates to improvements in the art of constructing the hulls of vessels of iron and steel; and it consists in the improved method hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art with which my invention is most nearly connected to make and use it, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of my specification, Figure 1 is a section of the bow-stem of a vessel. Fig. 2 is an iron or steel plate cut in the form for securing to the bOWSiLGlll. Fig. 3 is a section of the bow of a boatrepresenting said plate secured to the bow-stein. Figs. 4 5 6 represent sections of the same at lines a b c of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a modified form of the plate shown in Fig. 2.
The bow-stein A is constructed in the usual manner and of any desired contour, and is provided with the necessary openings B for rivets. In the bow-stem is formed atransverse slot, C, inclined inward and forward, as shown in Fig. 1. The stem-plate D, Fig. 2, made ofiron or steel, is formed with bifurcated extensions 6 connected together by the main or butt end E of said plate. Into the slot 0 in the stem is inserted the central portion of the butt end E of the plate D, the extensions 0 c of which straddle the bow-stern forward of the slot G, the edgesff of the plate D being flanged down and riveted to the how-stein, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. The part of the plateg between the dotted lines in Fig. 2 is secured to the bOIVSiJGlll A by means of screwbolts, as indicated in Figs. 3, 5, and 6. In all other respects the hull of the vessel is constructed in the usual way. It may be of advantage to construct the plate D in three (No modeLl pieces and rivet them together, as shown in Fig. 7.
The essential feature of my invention is the employment of the slot (land inserting in it that portion of the plate D between the dotted lines in Fig. 2, and Hanging down the cdgesff of said plate and securing it to the bow-stem in the manner indicated in Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6.
The advantage of my invention will be apparentto the skillful ship-builder without further description.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim is 1. As an improvement in the art of constructing the hulls of vessels of iron or steel, the'method hereinbefore described, to wit: first, forming a slot in the bowstein, and, second, forming the howplate to straddle said stem and rest in said slot, substantially as described.
2. As an improvement in the art of constructiug the hulls of vessels of iron or steel, the method hereinbefore described, consisting of forming in the bow-stem a transverse slotinclined inward and forward, and then inserting and securing in said slot the butt-end of the stein-plate, so that the bifur' cated extension, of said plate extend forward, substantially as described.
8. As an improvement in the art of constructing the hulls of vessels of iron or steel, the method hereiubefore described, consisting of, first, forming in the bow-stein a transverse slot inclined inward and forward; second, insorting and securing in said slot the central partof the hutt end of the stem-plate with the bifurcated extensions thereof reaching forward, and, third, hanging down and riveting said extensions to the stenuall substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of October, A. D. 1887.
THOMA S M. REES.
